In their mission to build stronger communities through innovative employment, education, and information services, KEYS Job Centre provides support for many government-assisted refugees (GAR) coming to Canada.
Family support teams make a tremendous difference to newcomers who are making a new
life in Kingston. It is a neighbourly gesture to offer friendship and support to the newcomers
who are beginning a new life here. Community members can help newcomer families who
came to Canada as government-assisted refugees get settled within Kingston.

● Typical activities include:
○ Providing conversational English support
○ Introducing the family to fun, affordable things to do in the community,
including activities for children and youth
○ Helping the family learn the Kingston Transit system
○ Helping the family learn where to shop, along with other social and informal
activities as relevant.

● Suitable Family Team Members are:
○ Committed to spending time with their newcomer family (up to 8 hours/month)
○ Available to be active on the Family Team for 6-12 months
○ Open to working collaboratively with people from diverse backgrounds,
including newcomer families from other countries and volunteers with different

Job Summary:
To provide timely and professional customer service for all current and potential customers of TEND. To coordinate the professional services of TEND associates, including booking, tracking, contracting and invoicing, and to ensure the accurate and timely dissemination of information to support booked trainings. To support the creation and maintenance of TEND client management systems (Salesforce, Asana and Excel) and ensure that current and correct client data is available and accessible at all times. To provide insight into sales trends with a goal of supporting the growth of TEND business.

- Strategize on products and creative solutions for existing clients
- Walk clients from process of potential customer to satisfied (and repeat) client
- Provide information verbally or by email about products/trainers/timeframes
- Work with clients to find a product offering that meets their budget.

Canada isn’t the country it thinks it is.

We love to say Canada “takes care of its people.”
That we’re compassionate.
That we have strong public systems.

But the truth is… a massive portion of the care Canadians rely on isn’t delivered by government at all. It’s delivered by nonprofits — quietly, consistently, and often invisibly.

Here’s what the data actually says:
📌 136,000+ nonprofits operate across Canada, running everything from food banks to crisis lines to youth programs.
📌 In late 2023, while other sectors stagnated, nonprofits’ real GDP still grew.
📌 Employment in social services jumped 2.6%, because community care keeps expanding where systems fall short.

That’s not charity.
That’s infrastructure.
That is Canada’s safety net.
And most people don’t know it.

This became heartbreakingly clear to me this summer. I angry-cried at 2am as two close friends — smart, kind, compassionate people — told me they believed most nonprofit leaders were corrupt and overpaid.

They’d read one bad headline.
They’d heard one lousy story.
And suddenly the entire sector looked suspicious.

These two smart, middle class Canadians had no idea what was run by nonprofits as I rhymed off local resources....

We’ve shown up so consistently… that we’ve become invisible.

And when people can’t see you, they don’t fight for you.
They don’t advocate for policy. They don’t fund the thing keeping their community afloat.
That invisibility is a Canadian blind spot and its hurting nonprofits.

So when CharityVillage published my article this week — of all weeks — it felt like perfect timing. (I wrote this back in the summer!)

Because if you’ve ever:
• used a food hamper
• relied on a parenting program
• had a teen in a mentorship group
• leaned on a mental health line
• accessed harm reduction supports
• attended a community class, camp, or cultural program — you’ve likely been held by a nonprofit.

Not a government department. Not a corporate program. A nonprofit.

Someone’s neighbour. Someone’s grandmother. Someone’s burnt-out frontline worker on a one-year contract. Someone doing their best to keep your community intact.

Nonprofits aren’t “nice-to-haves.”
They’re essential services.
They’re Canada’s social infrastructure.
And it’s time we talked about that publicly.

If you’re inside the sector: Your work is not invisible. Even when it feels like it.
If you’re outside the sector: I hope this challenges you to see the care you rely on differently.
