There’s something I don’t see ANYONE on LinkedIn talking about right now. And it’s time to change that…

Here’s what your Slack lunch emoji says about you.

🥪 Sandwich. You just wanna let people know you’re on lunch without thinking too hard about it. You’re probably actually eating a sandwich for lunch.

🌯 Burrito. See Sandwich but with a finer palette.

🍝 Spaghetti. Like me, you enjoy romanticizing your life a little to distract yourself from “the horrors.” 

While lunch looks more like a Built Puff bar, a hard-boiled egg, and 3 mini cans of Coke Zero, you’re gonna eat it while dancing in $80 slippers to Sade on vinyl. It’s giving spaghetti energy, even if it’s more akin to a college kid realizing they can eat whatever they want because they’re an adult now.

If you let the intrusive thoughts win, you probably would have put the little umbrella drink 🍹as your status. But your coworkers might not understand that you’re not actually drinking a mai tai at noon. And you need this job.

Smooth operator. Smoooooth oper-aydarrrr

🍱 See Spaghetti but with a finer palette. This is the emoji I use for my lunch break block in my Google calendar. But it’s a more refined energy in there.

🥗 Salad. You’re a realist. And by that, I don’t mean you’re actually eating a salad for lunch. You recognize the only emoji that can truly communicate the feeling of a sad work-from-home lunch is a salad. 

Cold. Limp. Flavorless. Supposedly good for you, but really just putting off the inevitable… the heat death of the universe.

Either that or you’re the type of guy that wakes up at 4 am to a nice cold plunge and finishes the day with 4 hours of CrossFit. But let’s be honest, that guy is not actually eating lunch. He’s mainlining Huel. And there’s no Huel emoji.

🥑 Avocado. You recognize and relish the absurdity of life. (Truthfully, I only included this one because someone I work with uses it, and every time I see it, I delight in imagining her eating an avocado for lunch every day.)

No emoji status - For me, this is the true wild card. It could be one of a few things:

1. You are a self-employed solo. No one is in your Slack except a few forgotten Slack connects from past clients who probably did not pay you enough to warrant having that kind of access to you. Occasionally, you see the little circle by the client’s name go green and daydream about someone actually paying an invoice on time.

2. You give zero fks. This Slack message does not find you. You’re unfindable. Unknowable. Unreachable. From 12 to 12:30 you don’t even have a job or a home or a care in the world. You’re feral.

3. You are not eating lunch. You’ve forgotten what lunch is. You’re severed from 9 to 5 each day.

This is what we’re supposed to write about on LinkedIn, right? 

Yes, I wrote this on my lunch break. And yes, there’s nothing I want more than for you to drop your Slack lunch break emoji and allow me to read you for filth.

Results my clients and I have gotten from our personal brands:

1. Me - Built a $300k per year business (that’s still growing) while investing $0 at the start and only having about $200 per month in expenses right now.

Some nuance:

1. Ideally, you can have both. Don't think that being liked means you're being inauthentic. Good, authentic people are usually pretty popular. 

2. Don't mistake rudeness or lack of patience for authenticity. Many people think they have high standards, but they're actually just prideful.

But I think we all know what it's like to settle for not being who you are so you can impress people that you barely like.

Avoid it as much as you can.
