update from 100 days of reaching out. today is day 25, I’m one quarter of the way through. here are some things that have happened so far:

response rate is currently: 56%
positive outcomes:
> got interviewed by CNBC.
> connected with one of my heroes (after initially reaching out six years ago), and am currently interviewing her for an essay.
> booked a very cool podcast I'm obsessed with.
> booked a workshop at Harvard (life goal I didn't know I had).
> found some incredible sponsors for my son’s formula 1 themed birthday party. 
> 2 potential amazing clients for my consulting biz, Momentum Growth.

> made a couple of new friends I feel so genuinely excited about. 🥹

rejection rate is currently: 44%
negative outcomes: 
> 9 reach outs have been ignored, which is basically the same as not sending it in the first place. nothing gained, but nothing really lost, other than the time I spent sending them. 
> 2 reach outs have been outright rejected, but I’d rather be rejected than ignored because one thing I've learned over the years is that no is not always final. who knows what could happen in the future… 

vibe check:
> whew !!!
> I forgot how much this work kicks my ass. it’s hard to show up in this way consistently. not knowing if someone will ever respond, but hoping they do is weird… it’s like having a lot of open loops in your head.
> most days, I feel incredibly full of possibility, which has opened up other adjacent doors in my life. I feel like I’m seeing opportunities everywhere. even the ones that feel out of reach feel within reach, somehow. whatever this kind of delusion is, I’m very into it.

one of the craziest things about consistently reaching out is how the connections you make (and don't make) compound over time. 

last week ago I hosted a 100 person anti-networking party at TALEA Beer Co. it came together very quickly. 

four weeks out, David Nebinski convinced me to pull the trigger and book the venue.
two weeks out, I connected with Alex Chung and we decided to co-host with Goodword as our co-sponsor. 
one week out, we had 100 people rsvpd and almost 200 on the waitlist.

I actually cannot believe how quickly it came together.

but I mentioned something in my toast that I totally forgot about until Lizzy Palmer repeated it back to me later in the week.

when we reach out to people, when we go to events like these, when we put ourselves out there, risking failure or embarrassment, etc, we’re hoping to be rewarded quickly.

we’re impatient, understandably. we want to accelerate growth in our business, meet the collaborators that can elevate us, make connections that change our lives. we want it all right now. and wanting is beautiful. 

but actually, the outcomes we desire are typically a product the repetition in continuing to make connections overtime. 

like how I never would’ve met Alex if Sophie Caldwell didn't write an article about my 100 day reach out challenge. 
I never would’ve met Sophie if I didn’t get over myself and post about it on LinkedIn.
I never would’ve found the words to post if I hadn’t sent hundreds of cold emails over the course of many years. or if I didn't have supporters like Taylor Harrington 🎉 encouraging me to go for it.
I never would've been inspired to send my first cold email without picking up Molly Beck's book Reach Out.

as quickly as this event came together, it has also been years in the making.

we have so much more agency than we think in finding our people, but developing relationships that change our lives, likely, won’t happen immediately.

when it comes to networking, or anti-networking, invest in the long game. show up, not for the opportunity to change your life now, but for the unknown ripple effects that will unfold when you make a true connection with someone.

this idea of approaching networking, slowly, consistently, over the course of a lifetime, is the whole reason the Reach Out Party exists in the first place... 🥲

at the end of the event, I told David that I'll know it was a success, if one cool thing happens to someone from making a connection there. not now, necessarily, but one day.

last week, I sent everyone coming to the event a list of rules and specifically left #11 blank in hopes that I’d discover it along the way. very glad to say I have.

I taught a workshop for the The Old Girls Club yesterday, and for some reason, right as I was taking this photo, I became extremely nervous. like sweating above the waist but freezing below (huh?), I had a hollow feeling in my stomach, and my mouth was extremely dry. 

this level of nervous was weird for me, since I've been doing this for so long, but I think I became overly aware that I was about to speak to a bunch of very impressive and successful women and fear crept in that I had to show up or present myself in a certain way.

1 minute before starting I quickly enabled a waiting room, brushed my teeth, grabbed my chapstick, and smacked my hands on my cheeks a little.

I shook out my body, let everyone in, and instantly relaxed when I saw everyone’s faces. seeing everyone reminded me that I am a person and everyone there is a person and we’re all just here to learn together about how to make better 1:1 connections in a sea of overstimulation and spammy messages and thats actually very earnest. 🥹

it wasn’t until reflecting on the experience that I realized how almost identical it is to the way networking can feel sometimes. we deprioritize it because of fear of rejection or judgement. we have the best intentions of reaching out but we never end up hitting send because we are tired and busy and distracted and it's just a lotttt.

but when you can see past the initial discomfort, you discover that you’re a person, so is the person on the receiving end of your email, and if you can just be yourself, the fear kind of melts away.

I'm almost never in the mood to reach out, but always feel so good after I do. 😭

can’t believe I get to write all of these things together in this one sentence: 
I’m hosting an Anti-Networking Party sponsored by Reach Out Party and Goodword on Dec 3 at my favorite place in Williamsburg.

I’ve wanted to host a party like this for about five years. I dreamt of it being the kind of networking event that people who hate networking would love. carefully curated to prioritize meaning in our connections and depth in our conversations. about the true magic that can happen when you meet the right person at the right time. and it’s finally happening.

planning started with the encouragement and support of two friends and professional event goers / planners David Nebinski and Taylor Harrington 🎉. (It's generally very hard for cool things to happen without great people encouraging you to go for it.)

then, two weeks ago I got a completely unrelated DM from Alex Chung letting me know she’d read the CNBC article I was featured in. after only a few messages, we pretty much knew we wanted to collaborate… one call and a few emails later and I’m SO excited to be sharing this event with Alex and the Goodword team.

nothing!! great!! happens!! alone!! the best collaborations often come out of the blue. some of the most meaningful connections start when you reach out. 🫶

I still can’t get over the fact that two weeks ago Alex and I were strangers. now we’re texting about what snacks we want in the goodie bags...

if networking feels gross, it’s because the “rules” were originally written to keep you out. the “ladder” was not built to serve people like us. I used to think networking was just misunderstood, but I actually think there is something broken about the word, systemically.

if you are part of the (very large) percentage of the population that is in a marginalized group, if you’re an introvert or an artist, if you have a multi-hyphenate career, if you are uncomfortable presenting a performative version of yourself just to fit in, you probably feel turned off by the word.

as. you. should.

yet, the people who take it seriously, myself (obviously) included, will tell you how truly life changing, and life giving, it can be…

tonight, Alex Chung and I, (we met via cold dm like two weeks ago) with Reach Out Party and Goodword, are hosting a networking party for people who hate networking. an event built around depth in our connections and meaning in our conversations. 

these are the rules we’ve created to break all the rules:
1. no business cards.

2. you cannot, under any circumstance, ask the question: “what do you do?”
if someone asks this question, they may be reported and removed from the party. instead ask questions like, what is one thing you’re excited to accomplish before the end of the year? what is a goal you have for 2026? what is your most favorite and least favorite part about your work right now? tell me about a typical day in your life.

3. really listen with both ears. listen more than you talk. 

4. wear what you feel your best in, seriously. if that’s a green suit, cool. if that’s sweatpants, super cool. not only will this help you feel like you’re in your element, but it will help you gravitate toward your people even before talking to them.

5. when you meet someone you vibe with, let that be the win. you don’t always have to take some kind of immediate action.

6. if you do feel pulled to take some kind of immediate action after meeting someone, think first about what you could do for them instead of what they could do for you.

7. embrace discomfort. what if long silences were intimate not awkward?

8. be as honest as you can. you don’t have to give people the shiny, polished version of your story. come with both your real successes and your real challenges.

9. explore depth in your conversations instead of breadth. 

10. come in expecting something special to happen. you can expand your surface area for luck by believing that you're lucky.

11. 

I don’t have a number 11 yet, but it feels important to leave room for it to reveal itself.

What made Carly Valancy's Anti-Networking Party so successful?

1. event name: the event name was spicy! The "Anti-X" naming filtered out and curated a certain group of people... in a good way. 

2. intention: the event intention was to help people leave with one meaningful connection. This is specific, clear, and obtainable! 

3. ideal partners: collaborating with Alex Chung and Goodword just made so much sense for everyone involved and made the event even more appealing

4. intrigue: the event premise got people curious... What is an Anti-Networking Party??? Who is going to be there? What kind of amazing convos am I going to have? 

5. timing: Carly had recently gone viral on LinkedIn and people were excited to meet her! 

Carly does not even live in New York anymore, but was able to produce an amazing event because of these core ingredients.
