Do you ever say something nice at a networking event?
A quick, genuine compliment. Nothing big. Just human.

“Loved what you said there.”
“Love your coat/bag/shoes"
“You explained that so well.”

So why do we go quiet on LinkedIn?

If you catch yourself thinking something nice while you’re scrolling, type it. Send it. Done.

It makes them feel good.
It makes you feel good.
It takes about 10 seconds.
And even if you never speak again, it still lands.

Next time you’re scrolling, try a note like:

“I loved your post today. Really clear.”
“Your banner is brilliant. It says exactly what you do.”
“Your About section is so well written. That line about [X] really landed.”

Send it, then carry on scrolling.

Are LinkedIn polls dead?...here are some insights that might surprise you...

On a recent poll I ran it had:

That’s 7.2% 𝐨𝐟 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐝 𝐯𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 (𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐥𝐲 1 𝐢𝐧 14).
And the comments tell the real story, people didn’t just click, they had something to say.

Polls aren’t dead. People will vote… but only when the question is worth answering.

If you want people to vote, the question needs to be:

~ relateable
~ specific enough to have an opinion
~ easy to answer
~ comfortable to answer

The real skill is asking something your audience wants to weigh in on.

Have you ever wanted to message someone on LinkedIn… and then realised you can’t, because you’re not connected? 

You could send them a connection request but there is another way. 

Think what you would do in real life.

In real life, you’d see if someone could introduce you. 

On LinkedIn, we start to overthink it.

But a warm introduction is one of the easiest ways to cut through the noise, especially when someone gets loads of connection requests.

The great thing is that LinkedIn TELLS you who your mutual connections are. How easy can this be? Just send one of them a message asking for an introduction. 

That’s it. Low effort for them. High trust for you.

Do you ever ask for warm intros, or do you default to sending a cold connection request?

I’m still smiling from yesterday’s Justworks Community Moves Dallas.
And serves as a good reminder - 

Whether you're an introvert, extrovert, or an in-between ambivert (like me), getting up from our computers, outside, and in front of others is a MUST 😉 

I couldn’t be happier than to wrap the week with a post of gratitude for the invite from Justworks to attend their SMB-centric day of informative panels, networking, headshots, delish food (smoothie bar and short rib for the WIN), stunning venue (the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden at White Rock Lake – my first time there), and more!

And even better, the first panel/session to kick things off was “Don’t Forget the Human Touch – Culture, Community, and Creating in the Age of AI” featuring my HR peep Michele Haugh, MSHR-OD!

Other topics of “The Small Business Journey…Idea to Scale” and “International Expansion - How to Hire Globally,” and all panelists provided quality insights and perspectives.
 
My heart, mind – and tummy! – are full today.

Of all the networking events I attend, this was truly top-notch and one of the best I've been to in a while 🙏

2 years ago, I wrote and published an Amazon bestseller book.
But what you might not know is that it was never even planned.

Writing is my thing, and I’d ALWAYS wanted to write a book.

For the past 7+ years, I’ve had my title for what I thought would be book #1 in mind and on my vision board, along with my purpose and intended audience.

And while I’d started chipping away, there was a lot of "stuff" to unpack.

All to say, what I’d hoped/wished/planned (whatever intention you want to call it) to write and publish last year wasn’t meant for that time, and still not YET 😉 

Meanwhile...

My ACTUAL book #1 – FROM SATAN TO SENSATIONAL HR! – happened.

Easier to write and get to print quickly (literally, in 3 months) because it was an expansion of my DisruptHR Talk “HR is NOT Satan! Humanizing the “Evil” Experience” and had largely been written, or at least shaped in my mind.

I’m proud of book #1 as it set me up as a solo, legit, Amazon bestselling author. 

(will add, while the “bestseller”-bit was never the end goal, it was a plus)

But my next book has been more emotionally challenging to work through.

And my trip down memory lane while prepping for my upcoming TEDx Talk has been a tough reminder of that 😔 

All to say, sometimes we can’t rush the process or get derailed when things feel out of order, and especially if they never happen at all.

What’s meant to be truly will unfold in its own time, in all things.

***I am psyched for two upcoming wins, so be sure to stay tuned for more, as THIS story is still unfolding (cue the pun) 🤣

It's Friday! And to keep things light,
3 simple resets for the body and brain
⬇️

✅ Start small, knowing consistent habits DO add up! 
I first read Atomic Habits two years ago, and the message “Strive for 1% BETTER EVERY DAY" and compounding habits has stuck since. I’ve lost weight, improved my health, and more. And while other things haven’t always worked out in my favor, it’s empowering to know I’m putting in the reps with efforts – and no one can ever say I’m sitting on my tuchus not bothering to try. Whatever it is you need/want to do, just get started at all.

✅ Stay hydrated – with water! 
The one thing I constantly hear from people is that they “need to drink more water.” I’m actually the opposite, and have been obsessed since keeping cases under my work desks 15+ years ago. And then in 2020, I graduated to carrying a 64-oz water bottle around with me, which I religiously fill every morning to start the day. Start with one small bottle a day, then graduate to two or more (again, it’s all about the reps and consistency).

✅ Believe in positive outcomes (even if they only come from fortune cookies telling you so)! 
A strong mindset is the key to everything. A few days ago, my post-dinner fortune cookie said, “On this Friday, let go of the past and embrace the future.” I’m clueless what that means as that could go a number of ways right now, but it’s uplifting. I’ll take it (and it IS Friday the 13th 🤣)!

🎉 One big recent health-habit win:
Daily walking, baby!! Whether laps around my house/living room (I can do miles indoors) or outside, this has been a HUGE thing! And since February 1, three days of 9k steps, with all the others between the desired 10-13k! More consistency in the past two weeks than in the past few years is nothing to sneeze at.

I’m proud of myself, and want you to feel good about yourself and small wins, too! Life's too short not to.

As for the pic, I first shared it in a post a few days before my last layoff in 2023.

The "permanent" job may be long gone, but the water habit has always stuck, and I’m re-reading Atomic Habits right now (more on that in a future post).

Control and commit to what you can – you’ll literally feel better for it.

The path to answering either question isn’t linear.
In fact, it’s often topsy-turvy, tough, and even comical
(hence that circus music ) 🤣 

Long answer (just a few of many things):
• Risk reducer
• AI translator
• Hand-holder
• Pay processor
• Safety enforcer
• Boundary setter
• Culture calibrator
• Motivating trainer 
• Low-morale cheerleader
• Dumpster fire extinguisher

Short answer:
Small miracle worker creating big workplace impact.

Here’s the thing with HR - 

Always does the unseen hard stuff behind the scenes.
Often gets the bad rap.
Rarely gets the glory.

And many times, not needed until the fire's already burning, with no one knowing the origin point of how it even started in the first place.

All the reasons it’s always worth repeating - 

Most (if not all) HR Pros didn’t choose this path for big bucks or power trips.

We chose it because we care about people and the environments they show up to every day.

When done right, HR isn’t just transactional.
It’s transformational.

And it’s the difference between teams scraping by and HR empowering them to shine at their best, even while in the trenches ✨
