"What's the point of an IIT degree if you're in Sales and Marketing?"
I get this question a lot. And honestly, I have never had a better answer than now.

In the last four months, we have built AI-based business automation systems for more than 10 companies and generated really good revenue doing it.

I worked with founders and sales leaders running multi-million dollar businesses. Great teams, solid revenue engines. But AI was moving faster than they could keep up with. New ChatGPT updates. Claude launching new features. Tools like OpenClaw entering the space. Unless you are deep into it every day, it starts feeling lost.

Three months ago our stack was n8n, Clay, Apollo, Instantly and other 3-4 tools. Then we shifted to OpenClaw in full agentic mode. Better output, lower cost, stronger systems. Things are changing very quickly.

Did IIT teach me this directly? Not really. But it gave me a technical instinct. Even without hardcore coding, I could steer projects, train clients’  teams, and build systems that actually work, not just look impressive on slides.

There has never been a better time for engineers to enter sales.

Play to your strengths. If you are good on calls, use AI to prepare and close better. If you are not a phone person, build around email or social selling using AI. 

The channel does not matter, play with your strength and use the right tools and AI to bring right outcomes for the business you are involved with.

I read something from Spotify’s recent earnings call that caught my attention.
The CEO said their best developers have not written a single line of code since December.
Not because they stopped building.

Because AI is doing the coding.

But when you look closer, it makes sense in the context of how they are using AI internally.

Spotify has built a system called “Honk” that works with Claude to speed up development. An engineer can ask the system to fix a bug or add a feature. The AI generates the code. A new version of the app is pushed back for review. The engineer checks it and merges it to production.

Sometimes before even reaching the office.

Spotify has more than 750 million monthly active users and shipped over 50 features in 2025. This is not a small experiment.

The role of a developer is clearly shifting.

Less time typing code.
More time defining problems, guiding AI, and making decisions.

It feels like we are at a moment where the nature of software development is changing in front of us.

Do you see this as the new normal for tech companies, or is this something only a few well-resourced companies can make work right now?

I was watching clips from the India AI summit…Galgotias University fiasco. Within hours, the focus was no longer on innovation. The focus shifted to doubt. “Can India really build serious AI?” 

While we judge one incident that tarnished our image, Indian researchers are shaping some of the most powerful AI systems in the world.

Look at OpenAI. Srinivas Narayanan is serving as Vice President of Engineering there. 
Trapit Bansal has contributed to key reinforcement learning research and now moved to Meta. 

Then there are other Indians as well: 

Pushmeet Kohli (Google DeepMind, Microsoft Research), 
Ramanathan V. Guha (Google, OpenAI), 
Akshay Jagadeesh (OpenAI, Stanford), 
Anima Anandkumar (NVIDIA, Caltech, Amazon AI), 
Aditi Raghunathan (Google Research, Carnegie Mellon University), 
Apoorv Saxena (Google Brain, Google DeepMind), 
and Aravind Srinivas (OpenAI, Google, Perplexity AI). 

Mostly these people graduated from IIT and then built their career in USA.

The talent is proven. The impact is visible. The global influence is real.


So, instead of asking whether India or Indians can build AI, maybe we should ask how we can strengthen the entire ecosystem in India so that more of these talents come and build here.

Anthropic is hiring a Manager, Sales Development (Startups & Commercial).
Some people are mocking this, saying the company is building AI agents for sales and claiming AI SDRs will replace sales teams.

But this hiring tells a different story.

AI tools today can research accounts, generate email drafts, enrich lead lists, and automate parts of outreach. Many repetitive tasks that SDRs used to spend hours on can now be done in minutes.

But that does not mean the SDR or BDR role disappears.

Strong SDRs may actually become more valuable because they can combine AI tools with the right interpersonal and customer relationship skills.

People buy from people.

However, it is also true that people who are not good at selling, will surely struggle.

This pattern will appear across many roles, not just in sales. People who are good at their job and learn how to use AI effectively will become more productive and may command higher compensation than before.

Hence, the question is not whether AI will replace a particular job. The real question is how you will leverage AI to earn more.
