Nate Cusick

The best PMs and product leaders aren’t “mini CEOs.” They’re owner operators.

There’s a huge difference between PMs who try to create change through strategy and vision… and the ones who take ownership of the mess, fix the things no one sees, and actually make the organization run better.

And I think the future of product is shifting because of this.

We’re moving toward a new kind of role, something like a Product Operating Manager (not Product Ops). Someone who drives transformation from the ground up, not top down. Someone who improves how the system actually works, not just how the deck looks.

Because the truth is:

-Tech companies don’t need more strategists.

-They need more doers.

-They need people who want to run the business, not just design what could be built.

AI can help generate vision and strategy faster than ever, but it can’t replace the person who understands the constraints, untangles the dependencies, and gets the machine running smoothly.

The PMs who thrive from here won’t be the ones with the most visionary roadmap.

They’ll be the operators, the ones who make the vision real.

Product managers and program managers have to drive results without direct authority.

You can’t ask people to follow you due to your title (unlike leadership). So, your ability to influence becomes your most powerful tool.

Over the years, these principles have shaped how I build influence as a program manager:

-Listen more, speak less. Influence starts with understanding.

-Build trust through consistency. Small actions repeated over time matter most.

-Provide optionality to your stakeholders. Don’t just raise risks—offer solutions and pathways.

-Develop strong 1:1 relationships. Influence happens in conversations, not just meetings.

-Gather feedback early and iterate. Adaptability builds confidence and momentum.

-Establish a clear North Star. Alignment becomes easier when the direction is unambiguous.

-Tie outcomes to business goals. Influence grows when your work clearly drives impact.

-Under-promise, over-deliver. Reliability compounds over time.

And then? Wash, rinse, repeat. Influence isn’t a one-time achievement… it’s a habit.
