I will always be fascinated by the Croatian people mentality

During my agency journey, I’ve met people in person from other European countries and the world who own high-profit businesses doing anywhere from $30k-100k MRR or more

Some of them don’t even have a car. And they wear clothes worth not more than $100

On the other side, I know a TON of people from my hometown who drive 50-100k worth cars and wear cloths worth thousands while barely earning maybe 2-3k per month (which is very decent for Croatia, but still nowhere near enough to justify buying a car like that)

I guess it’s a cultural thing in all Balkan / South-East European countries

I never had a “real” job in my life.

In the summer after my last year of high school, I worked as a waiter for exactly one day before I quit.

The following summer I worked a student job assembling umbrellas for 1 month before getting fired for being too slow. I only took the job so I could blow the money on alcohol and parties that summer. 

During uni, I “freelanced” as a tutor helping other students pass specific courses. Made some decent money doing that. 

In my final year at uni, I worked as a community manager for a crypto project. Easiest money ever. A few hours of work a week for a salary above the Croatian average. The project got “hacked” after a year and vanished.

After graduating in finance & banking, I used the money I saved from that crypto job to buy myself time to learn a new skill and start something on my own since I decided not to go the corporate route.

I made the most random decision ever and got into email marketing.

Started posting on Linkedin and offering to work for free just to get experience and land my first client. 

The first client came through Linkedin inbound after 3 months. They were very happy with my work so they referred me to a second client. Then a third.

By mid 2024, I had five clients and solid experience so I decided it was time to start my own mini agency.

Today we’re a four-person team that has helped dozens of 7-8 figure DTC brands make more money and increase customer retention with email, SMS, subscriptions and loyalty.

Just had the worst customer experience ever buying a 2,500€ MacBook Pro from iSTYLE Croatia (the only licensed Apple reseller here), together with my team member.

As someone working in customer retention, this was a painful reminder of how costly bad communication can be.

We paid in full for the new MacBook model the website said was in stock. Then we got a single email: “it’s actually not in stock” and that we will have to wait.

0 updates, timeline or transparency for over a month.

We sent 10+ follow-ups. 0 replies.

Meanwhile, the same model was available in other Croatian stores. We could’ve had it delivered in 2-3 days max.

We had no idea what was happening with our order.

After over a month, 20+ missed calls and ghosted emails, someone finally answered. They had it in stock by then, but we asked for a refund, we were too frustrated to continue.

We immediately ordered the same model from another store. Got immediate updates, clear delivery timeline and actual support.

To iStyle, this was just one 2,500€ refund. But to us, it's a permanent trust loss - and that’s worth thousands in lifetime value for both me and my team member.

I’ve had better customer support buying a 50€ shirt.

What’s funny is that they could have easily made us stay. One or two helpful emails would have been enough. We were ready to wait. But they chose to ghost us instead.

And based on reviews, this wasn’t an isolated case. Tons of people have had negative experiences with them and decided to stop buying from them for good.

Worst part? They’ll keep selling exceptionally well, because they’re basically a monopoly in Croatia.

But they’re literally leaving hundreds of thousands of euros on the table, all because they can’t be bothered to respond to a few emails and calls.

What’s tragicomical is that a company of this size (and with exclusive Apple distribution rights) still doesn’t see the cost of ignoring its customers.

eCommerce stores - take notes.

First time I lost a potential client because I was being honest.

It was a small brand doing around $70k-$80k MRR. They reached out because they were seeing low conversion in their email flows.

I audited the setup and told them the truth. They had all the key flows in place, emails on every key touchpoint. 

Some emails were a bit boring but fixing that wouldn’t have made a major difference. The emails generally looked very good.

Their real problem was traffic.

I quoted them $1k for fixing some logics in their flows, adding some flow filters where necessary and setting up 1-2 AB tests where needed. (no new emails or flows, just some optimization)

Of course, the founder spoke to another agency in the meantime because he didn’t get an answer he wanted to hear. 

That agency told him their welcome flow doesn’t “connect emotionally” with the audience and that it doesn’t contain enough emails 😅

They also hit them with the usual BS like:

“Your email design is not good enough” 
“You’re not testing your subject lines” 
“You’re missing some “advanced” flows like back in stock.”

(That brand runs out of stock maybe twice a year and always sends a "back in stock" campaign anyway)

They basically told them everything they wanted to hear in order to make their own service appear more valuable in the founder’s eyes.

How do I know all this? Because I asked the founder why they chose the other agency and he told me what they mentioned in their audit

I also asked how much they quoted them. He didn’t say but I know the agency proposed to create all flows from scratch so it was probably no less than $5k for an “advanced” flow setup

I already see how this will play out: the brand will not get the results they wanted, they will end up burning money and start looking for a new agency to “fix the damage”.

Then they will keep repeating the cycle forever.

The dark side of running a small digital agency 👇 

Everybody is out here flexing sweet Slack messages from clients.

I’ll do the opposite.

Today, I’m sharing a message where I was called an “inexperienced” agency and blamed for “not being there” when I was “most needed.”

This is a problem every small agency has faced at some point.

Expecting from the founder to be involved in everything - every single day-to-day task, even when you’ve set expectations and introduced your team from day one.

Here’s what we did for this brand:

-Fixed their deliverability - took them from Spam to 70+ deliverability points in Klaviyo. It took us the longest it’s ever taken us for a client. Their audience was super sensitive to receiving emails. But we finally did it in a bit more than 30 days.

-Built all core automations and the popup from scratch. Resulted in thousands of dollars of revenue they previously didn’t have. (Klaviyo attribution, I know, but still…)

-Solved several technical issues they were facing.

-Hopped on random unplanned calls throughout the week, whenever the client wanted, even on weekends. Our last call? Saturday evening, 9pm.

The work we did in those 45 days was worth at least 2x more than what we initially agreed to. Which is fine, because we set the price at the very beginning.

I personally joined 4-5 random, unplanned WhatsApp calls during the final 10 days.

Some of those calls lasted up to 40 minutes - for things that could’ve been communicated in 5 minutes in the Slack group chat.

I personally completed dozens of tasks the client requested, despite her being one of the most disorganized clients I’ve ever dealt with. She was constantly late with communication and barely provided any brand guidelines.

Yet she expected us to drop everything and complete her last-minute requests the moment she thought of them, as if we weren’t already actively working with 10+ other clients.

And the thing is, we completed her every request.

After all, none of that mattered. The client resented me because I wasn’t personally executing every single task for Black Friday.

I couldn’t, because we have other clients too. That’s why I have a team. And that’s what she agreed to at the beginning of our collab.

Just days before this, she was telling me stuff like:

“I’ve learned so much about email marketing from you!.”

We were joking around on calls. Laughing.

The very next day, she calls me “inexperienced” and decides to stop working with me and my agency.

That’s agency life. These situations will happen again. I just hope less and less.

But I’ll own it, this one’s on me. I ignored the red flags at the start.

The moment she asked for that first Saturday night call, I should’ve said:

“Goodbye.”

There is this one brand we started working with but offboarded very shortly afterward

It’s just one of those clients where whatever you do, it will simply not work out

Whatever design we create - they won’t like it

Whatever copy we write - they’ll change it entirely

Working with them would mean constant, constant revisions and endless back-and-forth

Learning curve wouldn’t exist because we would never be able to read their minds..

It’s a shame because there are HUNDREDS of ways we could help them

Their Klaviyo is literally a playground for collecting easy money

If they just gave us power over their entire email marketing, we would 100% make them much more money

But that will never happen because they will never approve anything we create 

And we don’t want to spend so much time on revisions, it’s simply not worth it. So we’re not working with them and never will

Right now they are doing everything in-house and leaving a bunch of money on the table...

Can we finally debunk this myth?

Large agency ≠ Great agency.

Large agency can mean great agency.

But it absolutely doesn’t have to.

-There are a ton of large agencies that live on old fame

-There are a ton of large agencies that have 1 or 2 high-performing pods carrying the entire reputation, while the rest are average or even below average

-There are a ton of large agencies that outsource senior-level client work to junior strategists

Sure, some big brands will only want work with big agencies. That’s just how it goes.

But I’m glad to see the shift - more and more large brands are now choosing boutique agencies with lean, focused teams.

Am I biased because I run a boutique agency?

Absolutely f*cking yes.

But I also genuinely mean it.

Email marketing tip:

→Add a plain-text email from the founder / team at the end of your flows (easy to do with Omnisend)

Target people who’ve gone through the flow but haven’t bought.

Keep it simple:
 1️⃣ Help them choose the right product. Invite replies.
 2️⃣ Offer a better incentive - upgrade 10% to 15% and make it feel personal.
 3️⃣ Add urgency - make it valid for 24 hours.
 4️⃣ Use plain text. No buttons, just hyperlinks.

Tone: friendly, casual, and real. Not salesy or branded.

If you're in wellness or health, this works really well

1. Ask your email subscribers a question about your product or one of its ingredients
2. Give them 3-5 options to choose from
3. When they click, take them to the blog article where they can find the correct answer

This does three things:

You know when a repairman comes into your house, looks at your tiles, water pipes or AC unit and says:

“Oh my god… who did this for you?”

That’s literally how I feel when I’m auditing brands’ email & retention setups

And honestly that’s a question I use all the time

I’m basically a digital repairman.

“If an email campaign doesn’t directly generate sales, it failed.”

Wrong.

Not every email’s job is to close a sale right now. Sometimes the job is to keep you top-of-mind so that when the subscriber is ready to buy - next week, or next month - your brand is the first one they think of.

That’s how most purchase decisions actually happen in eCom. A subscriber sees your emails over and over. They’re reminded you exist. They get familiar with your products. They start to trust your brand. And then, when the timing is right, they buy.

Email isn’t always about immediate sales. It’s about staying in the game until the timing is right.

If you only judge success by instant revenue, you’ll miss the bigger picture.
