Hey I’m Sam – a Social Media Director specialized in the health & fitness industry with nearly 10 years’ experience. 

Throughout my career I have been blessed to work with several leaders in the industry such as C4 Energy, Cellucor, XTEND, Legion Athletics, The National Strength & Conditioning Association, and more.  

One of my biggest learnings is that social media is…bigger than social media. We closed a client in the first week of January for a branding project.
A big project. 

We raised the invoice.
I asked for the accounts team’s email ID to send it across. 

A few minutes later, I got a call.
“Sorry, we won’t be taking this forward. My family decided to go with another branding agency.”

And honestly?
I wasn’t upset.

Because he didn’t ghost.
He didn’t text.
He called and explained.

And then he said something that made it even better:
“You’ve spent time on this. We had two GMeet calls and you created a mood board. Please let me know how much for that, I’ll pay for it.”

That, right there, is respect.

As an agency founder, you learn this;
Not all disappointments feel like losses.
Some feel like dignity.

He saved me time and saved energy.
That I would have spent following up, waiting for a reply and not knowing if I should take up another project instead or not. 

Most importantly, though the client walked away, it left me feeling respected.

I wish more people did business like this.

Lately, work has looked like video calls from home.

No office buzz.
No professional setups.

Just a laptop on my dining table, a team on screen, and a lot of figuring things out together, virtually. 

Working from home for a while now has reminded me that leadership doesn’t always look loud or visible. Sometimes it’s quiet check-ins, honest conversations, and trusting your team even when you’re not in the same room.

Some days feel productive.
Some days feel scattered.
And most days are a mix of both.

But what stays constant is this: showing up. 

I do miss meeting them in person. 
The conversations, the energy, the small moments you don’t get on a screen.

But for now, this is what I can do: be present, be available, and be there when it matters.

Until I’m back at work, in person again.

We were once doing branding and performance marketing for a client.

While our branding work was solid, performance marketing didn’t give the results they needed. They decided to move on, and since they preferred a single team to handle all their marketing, the design project ended too.

Understandable. That’s business.

A few weeks later, we got an inquiry for branding.

The person said, “This came as a recommendation from *The client who dropped off* ”

I was already smiling.

Then I found out, it was her husband, reaching out for another venture.

That’s when it truly felt special. 

She trusted our design work enough to recommend us, even after parting ways.

Work done with honesty always finds its way back.

From a struggling agency founder to another who has probably figured this out, I need your perspective.

For a while now, there’s been one question quietly (and sometimes loudly) messing with my head: monthly shoot content.

In-house photographer or freelancers?

Here’s the catch, we only need raw footage.
All editing is done in-house.
Yet somehow, this is where I feel my agency quietly bleeds.

Freelancers offer flexibility, but I’m constantly confused about pricing.
What % of the monthly retainer actually makes sense to spend on raw photo/video shoots without hurting margins? What has been sustainable for you in the long run?

Like how much to you pay them for a days shoot? 

In-house sounds stable, but does one photographer’s style really stretch across multiple brand aesthetics? Or does it start limiting creativity over time?

I keep going back and forth, running numbers, second-guessing decisions, and honestly losing sleep over this more than I’d like to admit.

I’m sharing this openly because I know I can’t be the only founder stuck in this loop.

One thing I’ve learnt running an agency:
the hardest part of branding isn’t design.
It’s direction.

Over the last couple of months, we’ve had several branding and design projects, out of which some have been on our pending tasks for more than 3 months. Why?  

❌ No timelines.
❌ No clear direction.
❌ Vague feedback like “something’s off” or “let’s explore more” or worse, “give us more options, we will give you more direction”. 

What happens then isn’t just a delay.

That project stays pending forever.
A designer stays mentally stuck on it.
We’re unable to allocate resources properly to newer projects. 

And the entire workload for the agency  becomes heavier than it needs to be.

And, agencies don’t struggle because of workload.
We struggle when clarity is missing in a project. 

Now I’m not saying that anyone who comes to an agency needs perfect answers.
But they do need intent, priorities, and timely communication.

Communication where the feedback loop doesn’t break. 

Good branding is a collaboration, not a guessing game.

Having clarity is kindness to your agency and your brand.
