Copywriter & Content Creator

WSP in Australia

Working in partnership with Business Unit Executives, Principals and Project Managers, I read and analysed all Request for Proposals (RFP), Request for Tender (RFT) and Expressions of Interest (EOI) briefs for suitability to the business.

This information was then used for the pursuit/tender/client management strategies, making sure compliance to business procedures was complete. 

I attended and contributed at facilitated bid strategy workshops and following this the bid management included:

  * Planning the bid process, including document structure and delivery schedule
  * Dispatching tasks and deadlines to internal and external contributors
  * Coordinating internal communication and engagement
  * Project managing internal and external stakeholders for content contribution
  * Producing and editing content for consistent tone of voice and messaging
  * Continual content review to ensure responses answer the question

When not turning engineering into English for the bid, I was producing the non-technical responses (personnel CV's and project experience), making sure the details matched the selection criteria and the information was consistent throughout the document.

When not involved with tenders, I managed and developed marketing materials including brochures, project sheets and CVs as well as wrote and edited tender copy produced internally and by other contributors, to maintain an up-to-date bid library with consistently messaged content.

SA Proposal Coordinator (Parsons Brinckerhoff)

Working with a team of Contracts Managers and Contracts Administrators to:

  * Prepare, plan and release Request for Tenders and Requests for Quotations
  * Develop Scopes of Work in conjunction with the technical staff
  * Develop standard tender templates
  * Edit and review all policy, procedure and guideline documents for the Contracts team
 
The Selection (Pre-Feasibility) Study of ODX was one of the largest undertaken in the mining industry. It's aim was to find the best solution to expand the current underground mine. An open pit was the preferred option which would require major infrastructure (water, power, rail and township expansion) to be included.  It was a fast-paced and ever-changing work environment.

The role was also responsible for producing, editing and coordinating all content from the AdelaideConnect consortia comprising:

* Thiess Pty Ltd
* Leed Engineering and Construction Pty Ltd 
* PB Australia.  

Appointed by the Department of Transport, Energy and Infrastructure, we delivered the $118m South Road Upgrade/ANZAC Highway Underpass Project, known as the Gallipoli Underpass.

 The project included specialised subcontractors for the delivery of:

* Community and stakeholder management
* Bridge design
* Urban design and landscaping.  

I was responsible for producing or reviewing all key correspondence to market as well as writing non-technical content and editing the following:

  * Concept Planning Report
  * Concept Design Report
  * Geotechnical Interpretative Report
  * All Technical Specifications
  
I also created all internal correspondence processes templates and prepared/reviewed all internal and external presentations to stakeholders.

Preparation of Tenders for the Building & Civil Department

* Read and analyse tender documentation, identifying key areas of responsibility
* Coordinate, attend and contribute at bid strategy meetings and workshops and tender review meetings
* Prepare tender delivery schedule
* Coordinate internal and external contributors to ensure content is delivered in a timely manner
* Create content for all non-technical schedules of the document including personnel, previous experience and project information
* Ensure all data relating to non-technical content was accurate and consistent
* Copyedit all technical and management input, ensuring accuracy and messaging wasn't lost
* Review and edit document as a whole for consistency in tone of voice and messaging
* Design and/or coordinate all graphics and artwork

I started as the receptionist and was promoted to the role of recruitment consultant within the year. Twelve months later I asked to work for the sales and marketing team in a support role.

As sales administrator, I discovered the world of tenders and proposals.  Working for a team of 11 Account Managers, I curated their proposal content and tender submissions from a booklet of boilerplate responses. 

After two years, I was asked to join the Executive Recruitment team as their Sales and Marketing Coordinator, where I learned the concept of solution selling and tailoring proposals to address the client needs (or as my boss like to say "First understand the problem, then solve the problem.  

I quickly became responsible for creating copy that highlighted our consultant's experience and industry specialisation to find quality candidates and secure quality clients.

The job was pre-internet, so my role also involved drafting executive recruitment advertising copy and liaising with agencies to coordinate media space.

WHAT EXPERIENCE DO I BRING?
I wrote my first tender over 20 years ago and they've followed me ever since. I've sat on all sides of the table - creating bid documents, responding to tenders and helping with evaluation panels.

In 2004, I started working for a Tier 1 contractor and fell in love with the industry. I got to experience the thrill of writing winning submissions for the following bid types:

Having married an engineer I've lived and worked in Perth, Melbourne, Adelaide and Sydney, which means I know where you come from depending on whether you call it polony, devon, or fritz.
