We all have that one job we look back on and think:
Yep… that should’ve been my red flag.

Mine happened a couple of years ago, right before Christmas, with two lads launching an event brand in Swansea.

They were buzzing with ideas and super keen.
And honestly, I wanted to support them.

So I did what I’d never do now:

👉 I massively undercharged because I thought I was “helping”.

Big mistake.

What unfolded next still makes my eye twitch to this day…

I charged them a tiny fraction of my usual rate.

Not even £500 for full branding + a proper strategy call (which alone is £500 today).

They paid a deposit.
All good.

Then Christmas came.

Silence.

January rolls around, and I check in:

“Hey guys, any feedback?”

And they say… “We’re not doing it anymore.”

No problem - these things happen.
But when I asked for the remaining payment (as agreed in their contract), it flipped:

“Why are you trying to get £250 out of us?”
“You’re being dramatic.”
“How sad that you’re chasing this.”

Excuse me?

It wasn’t about the money.
It was the principle.

I’d delivered the work.
They’d signed the contract.
They’d received everything.

And yet here I was - being called a “scammer” for asking to be paid for my time, strategy, and expertise.

Here’s the truth most people forget:

Behind every event photographer or designer is:

👉🏽 Thousands spent on equipment
👉🏽 Lenses, SD cards, rigs - not cheap
👉🏽 Editing software
👉🏽 Hours of planning, moodboarding, shooting and editing
👉🏽 Actual experience that makes the work look effortless

This experience taught me two things:

1️⃣ Don’t discount your value to “help out”.
People who respect your work will respect your rate.

2️⃣ Contracts matter - and so does enforcing them.
Kindness doesn’t mean being a pushover.

I still love working with new event brands.
But I’ll never undercharge at the expense of my time, energy or boundaries again.

Sometimes the best advice doesn’t come from a business coach - it comes from your step-mum ❤️

My step-mum, Cathy, is a therapist and counsellor.

She’s one of those people who’s calm, grounded, and always has a way of seeing both sides of everything.

When I’m overwhelmed with client work or deadlines, she’ll say things like:

“If it’s not serving you, what’s the point?”

It’s such a simple reminder, but it hits every time.

Because when you run a business, it’s so easy to get caught up in it all…

💼 Saying yes to every client
💰 Chasing the next invoice
🔥 Jumping into the “next big idea” because you’re scared to slow down

You don’t even realise you’re burning out until your body reminds you.

But sometimes, the real growth comes from slowing down.

She’s also big on the idea that there’s no wrong decision - just different outcomes.

And honestly, that mindset has changed the way I approach both work and life.

Try it.

Next time you’re second-guessing a move in business, take the pressure off.
Make the decision, learn from it, and move forward.

Because like Cathy says,
”If it doesn’t work out, it doesn’t matter - at least you tried.”

My first project as a business owner wasn’t glamorous… 
But it changed everything 👀

Before I went full-time, I was freelancing on the side of my 9-5
(juggling clients during my 9-5 like a gremlin with a laptop 👩🏽‍💻)

And then it happened.

Eden Ibiza.
My first real “okay… this could actually be something” client.

I started off doing artwork and graphics…

And before I knew it, I was managing their social media in the run-up to reopening after COVID.

It was exciting.
It was chaotic.
It was very surreal.

It was like that feeling you get when you hit a PB at the gym:

A two-second rush of “YES!”
followed by “Right. What’s next?”

Because once you land one good project, your brain immediately goes into:

 Get another, and another, and another. 👀

It becomes a bit of a thrill - not just signing the client,
but seeing the work actually work.

Seeing results.
Seeing the brand grow.

That’s the part that feels like the biggest win. 🔥

And that little Ibiza project?

It gave me the confidence to keep going…
and eventually build Apollo Studio into what it is today.

Sometimes the “first big win” doesn’t feel big at the time.
But it’s the one that quietly changes the entire trajectory.

Here’s to the projects that start small… 💥
and end up becoming your turning point.🪩🙌🏼

Last weekend I ran my first ever race… and it was dressed as Santa 🎅🏽

And so did 3000 other people.

It’s called the Santa Dash and it takes over my village once a year.

You pick a 2K or 5K route, run it through the hills round the village.

Some people stretched.
Some people trained.

I warmed up with a can of G&T.

Myself and boyfriend took part, bringing the dog along too.

(Who was festively dressed up as a Christmas pudding)

Naturally.

We even made it onto the Saddleworth Independent socials, which feels like a local celebrity moment if I’m being honest 🪩

It was also the first proper race I’ve ever done.

You don’t get a medal for winning.
You get a medal for showing up.

Which felt oddly fitting.

The best part though?
→ It’s all for charity.

Every penny goes straight back into local causes, which makes the cold legs, hills and Santa suit sweat slightly more worth it.

Would I run it again? Absolutely.

Would I train next time? Still undecided 🤠

Landing bigger clients comes with one unexpected side effect: imposter syndrome.

I remember my first ever BIG client - 

I called the only other Freelancer I knew at the time (Brady) to ask if I could do it and if it was a good idea. 

He said yes, 
Essentially best thing I ever did.

Excited. Nervous. Convinced someone would suddenly realise I had no idea what I was doing.

Fast forward a bit… and there I was pitching full social media strategies to festivals, hospitality brands and event organisers.

And the same thoughts popped up:

“Why me?”
“Surely there’s someone more experienced?”
“Am I actually good enough to do this?”

Especially when you’re 25, sat in a room with people saying things like:

“In ‘99 when we first started promoting events…”
Meanwhile I’m thinking - I wasn’t even born then 🤠

They’ve run shows, booked artists, dealt with riders, and many things I’ve not even entertained the thought of…

And I’m the one telling them how to transform their digital presence.

That’s where the real imposter syndrome kicks in.

But here’s what helped:

👉🏽 Remembering that expertise looks different today.
I don’t need to organise a festival to know how to market one.

👉🏽 Focusing on results, not credentials.
When clients see growth, engagement and actual conversions - the doubts get quieter.

👉🏽 Owning my age instead of shrinking because of it.
Being younger means I understand digital behaviour instinctively.

It’s not a weakness - it’s the advantage.

👉🏽 Accepting that impostor syndrome doesn’t mean you’re unqualified.
It means you care about doing things well.

I still get the feeling sometimes.
But now I take it as a sign I’m stepping into bigger rooms - the kind I used to dream of.
