The Djokovic Rule:

Do you like hitting the ball?

In 2015, Novak Djokovic was asked what drives his success.

His answer wasn’t complicated:

“I can carry on playing at this level because I like hitting the tennis ball.”

A few years later, I felt the same lesson in real life.

I was having breakfast with Tim Cook and he walked me through his daily routine:

3:45am alarm.
Critical emails.
4:45am workout.
Then a jam packed day at the office.

And the entire time, he had this glint in his eye.

A day that would make most people’s head spin was lighting him up.

I remember thinking one clear thought:

Good luck competing against this guy.

Tim likes hitting the ball.

Then I looked around and noticed something uncomfortable:

Other people had that same glint for the work I dreaded.

And it clicked:

I’ll never be one of the best at this over the long term…
Because I don’t like hitting the ball.

That’s the Djokovic Rule.

Not “Are you good at it?”
Not “Can you tolerate it?”
Not “Does it pay well?”

Just one question:

Do you like the core, repetitive actions the work is made of?
Do the mundane parts feel weirdly satisfying?
Do you feel energized on Monday… because you get to do the thing?

If not, you may still succeed.
You may do well.
You may even do great in the short term.

But over a long enough timeline, it’s almost impossible to beat someone who genuinely enjoys the work itself.

And when you find that thing, I’ll say the same thing I said about Tim:

Good luck to anyone trying to compete with you.

Success won't make you happy.

Scottie Scheffler admitted that winning major championships no longer fulfills him.

He discovered what Jim Carrey tried to warn us about: "I think everybody should get rich and famous and do everything they ever dreamed of so they can see that it's not the answer."

It's called the Arrival Fallacy—the false belief that reaching your goal will create lasting satisfaction.

We tell ourselves:
• "When I make six figures, then I'll be happy"
• "Once I get promoted, then I'll feel successful"
• "If I lose 20 pounds, then I'll feel confident"

We reach the top. We get the thing. And then? We reset to the next mountain.

There's a scene in Cool Runnings that haunts me. The coach tells his star athlete: "A gold medal is a wonderful thing, but if you're not enough without it, you'll never be enough with it."

Read that again.

The truth nobody wants to hear: Happiness isn't at the top of the mountain. It's not in the having. It's in the becoming.

This week, write down your biggest goal. The thing you think will finally make you happy.

Now ask: "Who will I need to become to achieve this?"

Focus on becoming that person. Not getting that thing.

Because the person you become is the only prize you get to keep.

My grandfather once told me that you'll achieve much more by being consistently reliable than by being occasionally extraordinary.

So, show up.

35 Life Lessons From My 35 Years

This idea completely changed my life…

The Empty Boat Mindset:

Here’s a story I come back to when I’m feeling stressed or frustrated…

A monk goes out on a boat in a small lake to meditate. After a few hours of uninterrupted silence, he suddenly feels the jarring impact of another boat bumping into his.

While he does not open his eyes, he feels the irritation and anger building within him.

“Why would someone do that? Can’t they see me here? How dare they disturb my meditation?”

He opens his eyes, ready to shout at the person in the other boat, only to realize that it is empty. It had come untied from the dock and was floating in the middle of the lake.

In that moment, his anger and frustration disappears.

After all, you cannot be angry at an empty boat.

The story offers a powerful lesson, which I call the Empty Boat Mindset:

In life, you’re going to experience countless collisions. With people. With environments. With chance circumstances outside your control. Each of these collisions will threaten to derail you. To stoke the fire of anger, stress, and frustration. To knock you off your path.

The truth is that the negative emotions that grow inside you are rarely from the collision itself, but from your perception of the negative intent behind the collision.

If you convince yourself that every collision is a deliberate action by a bad actor, negative emotions will control your entire life. In others words, your interpretation of the collision creates your own poison.

The Empty Boat Mindset is the reminder that most of these collisions you experience in life are with an empty boat. There is no negative intent. There is no desire to harm. They are simply the random collisions of objects floating along on the lake of life.

Interestingly, when you embrace the Empty Boat Mindset, you reassume control over your own boat. You’re no longer prone to the spiraling emotional effects of chance collisions. You are a seasoned explorer, ready to adapt to whatever the seas throw your way.

So, the next time you feel a collision and find your negative emotions growing, pause and ask yourself a simple question:

Am I just getting angry at an empty boat?

The Empty Boat Mindset

My honest advice to someone who feels “fine” but not fulfilled.

(I wish I knew this sooner):

I read a research paper I can’t stop thinking about.

It was titled:

“The Peculiar Longevity of Things Not So Bad.”

A Harvard and UCLA team discovered a fascinating truth:

We’re worse at escaping mild pain than deep pain.

They called it:

The Region-Beta Paradox.

If a destination is close, we walk.

If it’s far, we bike.

So paradoxically, we reach farther places faster.

This paradox applies well beyond modes of travel. 
It shows up in the most impactful realms of our lives.

The researchers ran a series of experiments to see whether our predictions of the intensity and duration of negative feelings match our experienced reality.

In one experiment, participants imagined painful life events:
→ Getting turned down for a date
→ A friend hooking up with their ex

They were asked:
How intensely would they feel the pain? How long would that pain last?

Here’s what they found:
People believed that more intense pain lasts longer.

But interestingly, this isn’t true in practice, because people respond to their circumstances.

We act quickly to resolve intensely negative or painful experiences with a series of built-in adaptive processes.

So, our predictions for how long a negative state will last are wrong:
Intense negative experiences often resolve faster than mild ones. 

Because we act, consciously or subconsciously, to resolve them.

This has a variety of meaningful implications for your life.

The 3/10 job.
The 3/10 relationship.
The 3/10 life.

Those break you open.
They force change with the intensity of pain.
You hit a threshold that activates every mechanism you have.

But the 6/10? That’s the trap of good enough.

It’s not painful enough to trigger action. So you drift. You tolerate. You wait. You stay in jobs you’ve outgrown. 

In relationships that don’t nourish. In routines that feel hollow. 
Because they’re just good enough.

The worst thing in the world isn’t being on a bad path. 
It’s being on a good path that isn’t yours.

The bad path screams for change. The good one sits in silence.

It takes courage to escape the trap. You have to force action. You have to choose uncertainty over comfort. You have to make the cost of inaction feel higher than the cost of action.

And here’s an important truth to remember:
Courage isn’t courageous because it works out. 
Courage is courageous because you act without knowing that it will.

Hot take: There’s no such thing as a loser who wakes up at 5am and works out.

Why?

Because it’s hard.

It requires intense discipline—and it creates evidence of your power and control over your world.

That has ripple effects into every other area of life.

This is NOT to say that you have to wake up early to be successful, but it is to say that waking up early is the fastest way to rewire your brain.

To remind yourself that you can do anything. That you are capable. That you are a winner.

Remember: Confidence is built, not born. It is built through keeping promises to yourself.

Say what you’re going to do—do it. When you’re feeling stuck, that can provide the spark to get you out of it.

A lot of problems are solved by waking up early and working out.

1. The Persuasion Paradox
Have you noticed that the most argumentative people rarely persuade anyone?
The most persuasive people don’t argue—they observe, listen, and ask questions.
Argue less, persuade more.

2. The Effort Paradox
You have to put in more effort to make something appear effortless.
Effortless, elegant performances are often the result of a large volume of effortful, gritty practice.
Small things become big things. Simple is not simple.

3. The Wisdom Paradox
“The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know.” — Albert Einstein
The more you learn, the more you are exposed to the immense unknown.
This should be empowering, not frightening.
Embrace your own ignorance. Embrace lifelong learning.

4. The Growth Paradox
Growth takes a much longer time coming than you think, and then it happens much faster than you ever would have thought.
Growth happens gradually, then suddenly.

5. The Productivity Paradox
Parkinson's Law says that work expands to fill the time available for its completion.
Work longer, get less done.
When you establish fixed hours to your work, you find unproductive ways to fill it.

6. The Money Paradox
You have to lose money in order to make money.
Every successful investor & builder has stories of the invaluable lessons learned from a terrible loss in their career. Sometimes you have to pay to learn.
Put skin in the game. Scared money don't make money!

7. The Failure Paradox
You have to fail more to succeed more.
Our greatest moments of growth often stem directly from our greatest failures.
Don’t fear failure, just learn to fail smart and fast.
After all, getting punched in the face—a few times, but not too many—builds a strong jaw.

8. The Say No Paradox
Take on less, accomplish more.
Success doesn’t come from taking on everything that comes your way. It comes from focus—deep focus on the tasks that really matter.
Say yes to what matters, say no to what doesn’t. Protect your time as a gift to be cherished.

9. The Taleb Surgeon Paradox
Looking the part is sometimes the worst indicator of competency.
The one who doesn’t look the part has had to overcome much more to achieve its status than the one from central casting.
If forced to choose, choose the one that doesn’t look the part.

10. The Icarus Paradox
Icarus crafted wings out of feathers and beeswax to escape an island. He began to fly—the wings working wonders. But he quickly became blinded by his own engineering prowess and flew too close to the sun, which caused the beeswax to melt and sent him plummeting to his death.
What makes you successful can lead to your downfall.

The 10 Paradoxes of Life

I used to carry stress from morning to night.

Until I learned this…

The Water Glass Effect.

Most of the burden we feel in life comes not from the weight of what we’re holding, but from how long we choose to hold it.

I recently came across an old video of a professor sharing a powerful lesson with his classroom of students.

He holds up a glass of water and asks the students how heavy it is.

The students answer with a variety of figures:

8 ounces. 12 ounces. 16 ounces.

The professor shakes his head:

The absolute weight of the glass doesn’t matter. It depends on how long I hold onto it.

If I hold it for a minute, nothing happens. If I hold it for an hour, my arm will begin to ache. 

If I hold it all day long, my arm will feel numb and paralyzed.

Well, the weight of the glass hasn’t changed, but the longer I hold onto it, the heavier it becomes.

The students lean in, and the professor continues with the deeper lesson:

The stresses and the worries of life are like this glass of water.

If you think about them for a little while, there’s no problem. 

Think about it for a little bit longer, it begins to hurt. 

If you think about them all day long, you’ll feel paralyzed, incapable of doing anything.

Always remember: Put the glass down.

Pause to think about this in your own life:

It’s not the weight of the argument itself that bears down on you. 
It’s the weight of replaying it again and again.

It’s not the weight of the mistake itself that cripples you. 
It’s the weight of revisiting it again and again.

It’s not the weight of the regret itself that stops you. 
It’s the weight of ruminating over it again and again.

Stress, anxiety, fears, and tension. They all get heavier with time. 
And the harder you squeeze the glass, the faster it happens.

As you hold onto them, they compound the weight of their burden on you.

So, take a moment today to notice what water glass you may still be holding.

What has your arm trembling under its increasing weight?

The burden is not from the weight of what you’re holding, but from how long you choose to hold it.

Put the glass down.

The Water Glass Effect

My grandfather told me a story I’ll never forget.

(It has a life changing lesson)

An old carpenter told his boss he planned to retire.

The boss was sad to lose him, but understood.

Then he asked a favor:
“Would you stick around for one last job? Build one final house.”

The carpenter reluctantly agreed.

But in his mind, he was already gone.

So he cut corners.
Used cheap materials.
Rushed the work.

When the house was done, the boss arrived for the final inspection.

But instead of walking the house, he reached into his pocket and handed the carpenter the keys.

“This is your house,” the boss smiled.
“My retirement gift to you.”

The carpenter was stunned.

If he’d known he was building his own house…
he would have done it differently.

Now he’d have to live in a house he had built none too well.

The lesson: You’re always building your own house.

Every single day, the way you choose to show up determines the quality of that house.

If you choose to cut corners, use cheap materials, and rush the work, you’ll live with it. If you choose to nail the details, invest in quality materials, and take pride in the work, you’ll live with it.

You don’t get to pick and choose when to show up.

Every action lays a brick in one of the three houses you have to live in:

1) The Professional House
Every email you send, every meeting you attend, every piece of work you complete plays a role in building your professional reputation.
If you don’t take the small things seriously, you will never be trusted to take on the big.

2) The Relationship House
Every word you speak, every gesture you make, and every moment you show up lays the foundation of your relationships. Tiny daily acts of service build strong walls. Neglect, resentment, and indifference form cracks that grow over time.

3) The Physical House
Every movement, every meal, every night of sleep lays the foundation of your physical health. Skipping these small, daily actions may feel inconsequential today, but compounded over months and years, they shape whether you live in a house of strength or fragility.

A simple choice transforms the mundane into the meaningful.

Those who take pride in the seemingly inconsequential tasks—who choose to see the bigger picture—show up with a different energy and enthusiasm.

Life Changing Story... A MUST READ

One tiny mistake shouldn’t get to rewrite your identity.

But that’s what most of us let happen.

Imagine I hand you a white piece of paper with one small black dot on it and ask what you see.

Most people say:
“A dot.”
“A flaw.”
“A spot.”

Almost nobody mentions the massive white space around it.

That’s the Domino Mindset.

It’s the cognitive trap where one small negative creates a chain reaction of negative conclusions:

“I made a mistake” becomes “I’m terrible at my job.”
“That convo was awkward” becomes “Everyone thinks I’m weird.”
“The commute was stressful” becomes “My whole day is ruined.”

It’s the quiet thief of perspective.

It convinces you a temporary challenge is a permanent truth.

That a single bad gets to erase an entire stack of good.

The antidote is simple:

When you hit your dark spot, pause. Breathe. Zoom out.

Avoid this cognitive trap!

They’ll say you’re doing it wrong.

That’s just the Critics Tax at work.

There’s a quote I always come back to:

“If you absolutely can’t tolerate critics, then don’t do anything new or interesting.” – Jeff Bezos

It’s a powerful reminder:

No matter how you choose to live, someone will tell you you’re doing it wrong.

That it won’t work.
That you’re not qualified.
That your values are broken.
That you’re destined to fail.

But here’s the truth:

That criticism isn’t proof you’re off track.
It’s the Critics Tax—the price you pay for walking a path that’s yours.

People don’t judge the merit of your path.
They judge how well it matches theirs.
And when it doesn’t, they project.

They take their map of the world—shaped by their fears, experiences, and incentives—and lay it on top of your terrain.

The problem?

Those two maps rarely align.

What looks risky from their view might feel obvious from yours.
What seems naive from their lens might be values-driven through yours.

So yes, listen to feedback.

Sometimes there’s truth buried in it.

But never let someone else’s map dictate how you feel about your own path.

It’s your terrain.

You make the rules.

Every knock, failure, win, challenge, obstacle - good or bad - is is merely a plot point for your larger LIFE narrative. You are the writer, producer, director and star of your life. 

Stop making decisions based on whether or not you think you’ll win or lose and just make the damn decision. 

If you fail, you’ll get a great story. If you win, you’ll get a great outcome.

Here’s what to do:

1. Drop a comment below with your name, your story, and what your business does.

2. Don’t post and ghost - scroll the comments, find someone you can help, or someone who can help you, and follow them too.

3. Tag a friend who’s building their business, so they can join us.

Because your friends aren’t your audience - and that’s okay.
They love you, but they’re not the ones buying what you’re selling.

Hi, I’m Amelia - I built my business while raising two kids, and somehow made it work. I also found my customers, and 3 of my best friends (who are also building businesses!) on social media. If I can so can you x

My first proper 'job' was recruitment.

You got a phone.
A list.
And a target.

No training. No pep talk. No confidence.

Just: “Dial.”

I sat there making 100 calls a day.
Pitching people who didn’t want to hear from me.
Not warm leads. Not “people who’d shown interest.”
Strangers who were busy, annoyed, or in the middle of their day - and I was the inconvenience.

I got hung up on. 
Laughed at. 
Told to f*ck off. Regularly.

And then I had to call the next number like it didn’t rattle me.

That job didn’t just teach me how to sell.
It taught me how to handle selling.

Everything in life is sales. Not just business.

Going on a date? Sales.
Getting a client? Sales.
Negotiating with your toddler? Sales. 
Asking for a payrise? Sales.
Setting boundaries with friends/family? Sales.
Even confidence is sales - convincing yourself you can survive the outcome.

When I hear someone say “I’m not a sales person,” they usually mean:
“I’m scared of rejection and I’d rather be liked than get what I want.”

That's cool. 
But it’ll cost you.

Cost you whatever it is you actually want. 
Cutting my teeth in sales - in the most brutal of sales jobs - set me up for life. 

Rules I still live by:

1. Do the uncomfortable outreach before you “fix the website”
2. Say the price early so you stop entertaining time-wasters
3. Follow up twice more than feels polite
4. Aim for 10 rejections a week (no rejections = you’re not asking for enough)
5. Treat confidence like a skill, not a personality trait

Every founder should do a stint in sales. 
Because if you’ve never had to earn a ‘yes’ from a stranger, you’re not ready to start a business, yet.

My girlfriend rang me this weekend, furious.
A client owed her business money.

Not “a bit late.” Weeks late.

At first it was polite excuses:
“Finance is catching up.”
“Just waiting on approval.”
“Paid on Friday.”

Friday came. Nothing.

So she chased.
And the tone changed overnight.

Suddenly the work “wasn’t quite right.”
Then they found “a few issues.”
Then a long WhatsApp arrived at 11:47pm listing problems they’d never mentioned - and ending with:

“We’re not paying until this is resolved.”

Two days later, a legal-ish email.
Words like “breach” and “unsatisfactory.”
A not-so-subtle threat that if she “kept pushing,” they’d “take it further.”

This is the bit that fries your brain. 

They hadn’t raised a single issue during delivery.
They’d approved the milestones.
They’d used the work.
There are even Slack messages to her employees saying how happy they are with the work that was delivered only 13 days before.
They just… didn’t want to pay.

This woman employs 24 full-time staff and has another 40+ part-time.
And still - it felt personal.

So, she did what most good women do when they feel cornered.

She started typing a novel 😂

Explaining. Justifying. Defending.
Trying to be fair. Trying to be nice.
Offering extras to “make it right.”

That’s exactly what the client wanted.

Because some people don’t argue to fix the problem.
They argue to avoid the invoice.

In business, people will try to f*ck you over.
For cash. For ego. For control.

And they’ll bait you into an emotional mess so they can say:
“See? Unprofessional. We can’t pay.”

So, go clinical.

The advice I gave her - and you was;

- Stop debating. Start documenting (dates, approvals, deliverables)
- Move everything to email. One thread. One record
- Respond with facts + next step, only
- Offer two options only: pay + continue, or pay + terminate under contract
- And if they threaten legal, you don’t spar - you say: “Noted. Please send formal correspondence to [email]"

I've had 4 lawsuits since starting my business. 

Some filed by me, some filed by others. 
We've laughed at 1, settled 1, won 1, walked away from the 1 we couldn't win.  Even if we were in the right. 

Unfortunately, this always happens in business. Because in business - like in life, some people are just d*ckheads. 

So make sure you have good contracts, a level head. 

And remember, if someone’s trying to f*ck you over, your feelings are the first thing they’re aiming for.

Don't give it to them.

I’ve been thrown from a horse 2x times. 

The first time I was about 10 years old. My grandfathers horse, Annie, bolted at the top of a hill and I was too small to hold on. 

That hurt. 

The second time I was about 13, learning how to show jump. My horse stopped dead on the second jump.

My body did not. 

That hurt even more. 

But the thing that hurt most was the knock to my confidence. The little voice in my head both times that told me that because I hadn’t managed to hold myself on this beast of an animal, I was inferior and therefore should never do what I love to do (ride) again. 

The last time I fell, which would have been around 17 years ago, was actually quite bad. Like, body-bruised-terrified-to-get-back-on-the-horse-the-following-day, bad. 

Did the trainer call my mum and dad? No. 

Did they listen to me wimped and crying about not wanting to jump again? 

No.

They made me get back on the horse. 

Not a peep to my mum and dad. 

Not a single get out of jail free card.

Today, I ride almost weekly and it’s one of the things that brings me so much joy in my life. Joy I have passed onto my daughter. 

I’m telling you this because, we’ve all experienced our own version of being bucked off a horse.

We’ve all tried and failed a;
Job interviews
Dating
Businesses
Careers
Friendships
Marriages… 

In short, life is hard. Failure is inevitable. Pain is guaranteed. And you will suck at 90% of the things you try and accomplish first time. 

Get used to it. It’s all part of your story. And what a bloody great story you’ll have to tell your grand-babies one day when you can tell them all the times life kicked your ass, and all the times you kicked it right back.

Life isn’t about how many times you get thrown off, it’s about how many times you saddle back up. 

Oh, and wear a helmet.

Trolls don’t take money away from me.

Confidence comes from knowing exactly who you’re building for, and refusing to shrink for the people who were never your audience in the first place.

State your price, then - shut up.

Every business owner or freelancer has been there.

- You’re on a call with a prospect, you nervously state your price.
- You justify why you charge it.
- You ramble about why it’s fair.
- The prospect states their budget (which is predictably below your price). 
- You give a discount because you need new business and this is the only current option you have. 

Stop. Doing. That.

Here's what you do instead: 

State your price, then - shut up. 

Don't justify it or try to fill the silence. State your price and shut up. 

People feel a need to fill empty space, so the awkwardness will fill the room, and your prospect will need to say something like;

“So… what do I get for that?”

... then you state your deliverables, and again, shut up. 

When you state your price and stop talking, two magical things happen:

a) It shows you're confident about your price and delivery. Which makes you more valuable. 

b) It completely changes the power dynamic with your prospect from customer > supplier to customer <> partner. 

And quite frankly, it stops you from reeking of desperation. Desperation = discount. 

I've closed $4 million in business revenue with this tactic. More when you include speaking gigs, workshops and influencer deals I've signed. 

This works because it’s not about convincing. It’s about setting expectations - You’re not someone they can haggle with, you’re someone they trust to deliver results.

So when you're ready to stop undercharging and start getting paid what you’re worth, state your price - then shut up. 

It works a treat.

In my first year of business, I made $550,000 with no website and less than 100 likes a post.

If you’ve been waiting to “grow your audience” before you start selling - stop.

You don’t need millions of followers to make serious money. I've got a friend who has less than 5k followers and makes over a million pounds a year!

What you need to make content that’s actually valuable to the people who buy what you sell.

If you’re a brow artist in a small town and your videos get 1,000 views - that’s amazing.

Because there might only be 1,000 people in your whole area who even book brow appointments - and you just reached every single one of them.

We get obsessed with views and likes, we all compare ourselves to these huge creators with enormous accounts but YOU don't need an enormous account to make an enormous amount of money, you just need to create content that is specifically designed for who you're trying to reach. 

So the next time you think, “Only 300 people watched that,” imagine standing in a room with 300 potential customers looking straight at you.

A small, focused audience will always outperform a massive, distracted one.

So stop waiting until you “have more followers.”
Start creating content for the people who actually pay you.

Because trust me when I tell you, 100 people watching your content who will actually buy are worth more than 100,000 who just scroll past.

Here is how to build a personal brand WITHOUT posting a single thing on social media ↓

1. Go to networking events.

Yes, even those awkward “warm Prosecco in a basement” kind of events 😂. Walk up to people, introduce yourself, connect on LinkedIn. Some of the best business relationships I’ve built started this way - and they still do business with me today.

2. Join founder communities.

WhatsApp groups, Slack channels, any founder networks. Give advice, reply to questions, share your knowledge. You don’t need to post publicly - just be a source of valuable insight, and people will start noticing you.

3. DM strangers strategically.

I DM 10 strangers a month and ask them for a coffee. Reach out to people online who share your values or are doing what you aspire to. Ask for a coffee, a chat, or advice. These conversations not only broaden your network but also position you as someone who’s proactive and genuinely interested in connecting.

4. Be a good human.

Nothing travels faster than kindness. Giving time, energy, advice, and making introductions will get you noticed more than any post ever could. People remember good people, and your personal brand grows naturally when you are one.

You don’t need to post every single day to be well-known and respected in your industry. 

Build real relationships, share your knowledge, and be a good human - and your personal brand will speak for itself.

One of my team quit.




I suppose that is what happens when you hire smart and ambitious people. 

She’s gone out on her own to start an agency.
And she's already taken on a handful of clients. 

She messaged me last week - “I think I’ve got a client problem.”

She was onboarding all these clients and ended up doing 2x the amount of work she'd contracted to do to service them. 

We had a 30 min session and went through her process, her fee structure and her sales process. 

She didn't have a client problem. 
Her clients loved her. 

She had an expectations problem.

She'd sell a retainer with a clear scope.
Then the client started drip-feeding “tiny” extras.

“Can we add a few more posts?”
“Can you rewrite this one?”
“Can you jump on a quick call?”
“Also… can you do the founder’s page too?”

And she kept saying yes.

Because she’s new. 
And she wants her clients to be happy.
And she’s scared that if she pushes back, they’ll leave.

I know because I was here in 2020 when I set up my own agency. 

But here's the problem with that way of working - you end up doing 2x the work, for the same fee. 
You then resent the client. 
And the client can feel it. 

If you don’t define how you work, the client will define it for you.
And they will always define it in a way that benefits THEM.

So I told her to build what I call the "velvet rope" - the guardrails that protect your margin:
- Scope is a fence. Outside the fence = paid. Every time.
- “Yes, and…” is your best friend: “Yes, we can add that - I’ll send a separate quote.”
- Put comms in one place. If it’s in WhatsApp at 11pm, it doesn’t exist.
- Increase your prices like a grown-up: early notice, clear value, no apology.

They need to know you, connect with you, trust you, long before they ever buy from you.

We don’t believe brands to tell us the truth.
We believe people.
So if you’re building a business and not building your personal brand…

She then gave me:
- some ideas 
- some questions
- and some copy that I could share on my social media to direct people to her new book.

Women run 18% to 20% of all businesses in the UK, but one of the reasons
we're unable to scale them to the heights that a lot of men can is because we don't f*cking promote them!

We don't ask people to promote our business.
We don't ask people to support us.
We think that we cannot do that because if we do, we will be being "braggy".

Take a leaf out of Stef's book and f*ck being humble.

And ask your friends for support. 
If you've got a book coming out.
A business launching.
A new product.
Maybe you've just moved careers.
Or you want build your personal brand. 

Ask your friends to support you.
And even better tell them how you want them to.

Life is too short not to have supportive friends. 
And if people are really your friends. they're not going feel weird about supporting their friend's new venture.

Posting content when you have no followers is embarrassing.
Going to the gym when you’re overweight is embarrassing.
Pitching your business idea and hearing “no” is embarrassing.
Starting something new and being bad at it is embarrassing.
Telling people your business failed is embarrassing.
Speaking up in a meeting and stumbling over your words is embarrassing.
Recording your first video and cringing at how you sound is embarrassing.
Walking away from a stable job to chase your dream is embarrassing.
Sharing your story online and getting no likes is embarrassing.

But you know what’s more embarrassing?

Never trying at all.

Embarrassment is the cost of entry to success. Pay it. 

It’s worth it.

- Doing it yourself = death by 400 micro-decisions

Last year I met Daniel Bulteel, founder of Meet-Ting and now I am absolutely delighted to be a founding partner of the business. 

Now I've seen a LOT of sh*t AI tools. 

But Ting is a little different.

I copy ting@meet-ting.com into my emails and ask it to schedule meetings for me.

It then looks and my calendar,
my preferences
my priorities
and replies with times. 
Handles the back and forth. 
Follows up. 
And confirms. 

Oh and if we need to reschedules, it handles that, too. 

Ive delegates my entire calendar to AI.

I’m not saying this will change your life.

I’m saying it will stop your life being dictated by
“Just checking you saw this…”
and “Any chance you’re free this week?”

And that to me, is a f*cking win 😂

When I first started my personal branding agency, we were a generic marketing agency.

We managed company brands.
Personal brands. 
Social media.
Website builds.
Copywriting.
Blogs.
Training and LinkedIn workshops.

And be we... I mean me.

I did everything. 

The business didn’t specialise in personal branding until about 3/4 months after I began trading. 

And that decision to niche initially LOST me business. 

I’d been working with two recruitment businesses since the month I founded the agency.
Combined they were paying me about £6500 a month in retainers to manage their company brands
Money I couldn't afford to lose.

But I lost them anyway.

Once we'd been going for a few months, I raelised that the #1 enquiry the business got was for personal branding. 

That is what people saw the business - and me as. 

So I made the scary decision to niche. 

I got on calls with our clients and told them I could no longer help as it just wasn’t the right decision for my business. 

One of them took it well.
We had an off boarding period which gave me some grace to fill the revenue hole - and their business some time to find a replacement agency. 

The other, didn’t. 

I still remember the email the CEO sent me. 

The reason I’m telling you this, is I didn’t decide that Klowt was going to be a leading *personal branding agency - that decision was made for me… but only ONCE I’d started the business.

Because the data and my heart couldn’t lie - the best results my agency was getting for clients was through personal brands. 

So, Klowt became a personal branding ONLY agency. 

We lost money in the beginning, sure. 

But what I lost in initial revenue, I’ve won in brand equity, notoriety and humbly… infamy as THE personal branding company. 

You can make plans, you can try and forecast, check milestones off your list before you take the plunge - or you can just go for it, and let the right decisions present themselves as you move forward. 

Just go for it. 

Because even a sailing boat can only open its sails up AFTER it’s left the harbour.

Posting about your big team on LinkedIn doesn't mean you're running a successful business 😂

I remember I saw a post a few years ago on LinkedIn celebrating their 92 members of staff... and £2.9 million in revenue. 

Now, I am no where near the I-fly-business-class-and-take-pictures-of-it level that I'd like to be at... but even I know that doesn't make sense. 

Your business isn’t successful because you have a big team - it’s successful if it makes... drum roll... profit.

Profit is the real measure of success. 

And maybe you're reinvesting right now, maybe you'd like to reduce that corp tax bill - so you're posting a bit fat £0. 

That's cool.

But you’ll never see people brag about profit on LinkedIn, because most of them don’t have any. 

Oh, and stop comparing your business to other people's posts.
