Just last month, Fernando Mendoza led Indiana University to its first College Football National Championship. This followed him becoming Indiana’s first player to win the Heisman Trophy and lead the team to a perfect winning record in the regular season, another first. 

The nation has been drawn in by his unlikely journey, his earnest charm and obvious leadership traits. Now, he is the consensus selection to be the No. 1 selection for the NFL’s draft in May.

When a Brit says "I hear what you say", they mean "I disagree and don't want to discuss it further." When they say "that's a very brave proposal" they mean "you've completely lost the plot." And when they say something is "quite good"...it's not the compliment you think it is.

I've always been fascinated by language and how culture shapes the way we communicate. One of the best books I've read on this is The Culture Map by Erin Meyer. If you work across cultures, it's a must-read.

With a load of friends and half my family in the US, and having spent most of my life working for American headquartered companies, I've had a front-row seat to the comedy of British vs American communication for years. We speak the same language, but we often don't.

So for some Friday fun, I've been experimenting with Claude Code and built a little translator. Type in what the British person said, and it tells you what they actually meant.

When I left LinkedIn after 14.5 years, I knew I needed a break. What I didn’t realize was how quickly a slower pace of life would still find a way to fill every hour of the day. Parkinson’s Law - the idea that work expands to fill the time available - turns out to be just as true for gap years as it is for the boardroom.

I didn't walk into this year with a rigid plan, but as I reflect on this first chapter, my time has fallen into four main buckets:

𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 & 𝐔𝐧𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐌𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬: From the ‘Bucket List’ extremes with my husband of cycling the Uyuni Salt Flats in Bolivia and diving with whale sharks in Indonesia, to the smaller trips with family and friends that simply wouldn't have happened if I were still checking my inbox at 11 PM.

𝗕𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗿'𝘀 𝗝𝗼𝘆: My piano skills have officially graduated from horribly mediocre to just mediocre. I can now play I Dreamed A Dream (who doesn't love Les Mis?) with unwarranted confidence, as well as the theme music to Twin Peaks. It turns out there is immense joy in being a beginner again.

𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 & 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻: Even while off, I can’t shake my fascination with technology, and candidly, one of my concerns about taking a break in the current climate was being left behind given the speed of technological change.

- The Daily Ritual: The AI Brief podcast. A digestible and helpful overview of everything taking place in AI, across all sectors.

- Experimentation: Moving beyond theory by using Gemini, Claude, and Midjourney, as well a number of very specific tools like Magnific.

- The Build: Combining my love for word games with low-code tools like Lovable, I built Alpha Ascent (www.alphaascent.fun). I’ve never coded before, but it kept my tech brain engaged while my corporate brain takes a nap. Take a play and heads-up, it could still be buggy.

- 𝗘𝘅𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗲: I’ve committed to exercising 5x a week and racking up the walking miles. I’ll be honest…I still don’t love it, but I no longer hate it. More importantly, I feel completely different in the best possible way. The middle-aged aches haven't entirely disappeared, but they’ve definitely dissipated.

I’m acutely aware that the ability to take time out is a privilege. It was a very personal decision that felt, and continues to feel, right for me. I wasn’t sure if I’d be bored after a few weeks, but I’ve found that a different pace of life doesn't mean a lack of purpose.

The time will eventually come to dive back into a full-time role, and I’m just starting to think through what that could look like. In the meantime, I’d love to hear from my network:
