Making cyber risk easier to understand and solve

Are you using your cyber risk to drive your cybersecurity strategy? There's no room to experiment when attacks are on the line, I'll show you how:

In math, there's an equation called "Expected Value" that helps us measure the possible outcomes and impacts related to an 'event'.

For example, you can use it to measure the odds in a game to see if a bet makes sense.

It's also what goes into understanding our cyber risk, and in cybersecurity it's based on two key factors:

Likelihood

and

Impact

Likelihood is based on threats and the vulnerabilities or weaknesses in our environment. 

Impact is based on how we use our tech and data and boils down to the CIA Triad of Cybersecurity which measures possible impacts from compromises of Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability.

Heard about a hacked social media account today - how are you identifying where to put MFA?  Here's a tip to help with your cyber strategy to avoid this mistake:

One of the common tips I share is how to understand your risk better and let it drive your cyber strategy and best practices.

When you want to understand the potential impact different systems could have on you if compromised, use the CIA Triad of Cybersecurity to compare them:

Confidentiality - is there information here that needs to stay private?

Integrity - how will this impact us if someone is in there changing or manipulating data or processes (like hijacking a communication)?

Availability - how will it impact us if this is down?  


This gives us a good understanding of what can happen to our business.

In this social media hack, the business had a Compromise of Integrity and Availability and both surprised them.

The integrity is a big issue because now that person can communicate as them, post as them, or even spread attacks in their name - using that account.

The availability was a bigger surprise.  Right now, they can't use their account to handle their marketing and this was a big component of their business.

Until this is resolved, they are going to continue to experience issues in this area.


So, don't let the CIA of Cybersecurity sneak up on you - you can predict this when you assess your risks and compare systems.  It should guide your strategy.

A final tip - please turn on MFA for anything in your business that leads to sensitive data, important communication tools (Email and Socials), and anything that is critical for your business to operate.

There's more to do but these are great places to start and MFA may be an easy win if you don't have it on yet.

I've been hearing about a lot of email compromises lately - some have been taking them too lightly so I wanted to share some tips. 
Be careful out there but know what to do if things go wrong.

As soon as you get confirmation that there was unauthorized access, you unfortunately have a breach.

In some cases, this triggers laws that require you to take certain steps to investigate, recover, and notify others.

Regardless, there are some immediate steps that need to happen to get someone out:

1. Reset passwords and ensure MFA is enforced across the organization.  (If the threat actor has credentials, we want to change this on them)

2. Revoke the active sessions. (Changing the password doesn't always force someone to have to log back in, killing the active sessions makes everyone have to re-authenticate with that new password).

3. Check for rules they may have set up.  (They like to keep their hooks in after you boot them out and often use forwarding rules to keep an eye on your emails)

4. In tandem with the above, get insurance claims for cyber liability started. This will get you access to the appropriate help and resources to handle this correctly.

5. Prepare to collect and preserve evidence, like access logs, so you can be ready to investigate.  Some of the logs you may need to pull have limited time frames you can run them over, so doing this asap is critical.


The problem with Business Email Compromises is that they tend to start much further back than you may think (the AVERAGE phishing attack is detected about 180 days after it started... this could have begun months ago)

Your email can have sensitive information that's not supposed to be exposed to unauthorized individuals, and your account can be used to phish others that trust you.


If you find this happening, don't hesitate.  Every second counts in a cyber attack.

I hope this helps you prepare, there's more to do but this would be a good start.

Focus on what you can control -> This is especially true in cybersecurity and one of the first things that you can benefit from is by identifying what those things are you can control.

We went over this in a webinar earlier this week and I thought it was a good tip to share.

When it comes to cyber risks, we can't do much about the threat actors out there and what they are doing - other people are fighting that fight.

As a business leader, we need to turn our focus to our environment and the people, processes, and technology that we've built our business around.

When we look at the factors within our environment, we can determine what needs the most attention based on both the Likelihood of something being attacked and the Impact should that attack be successful.

The best way to get started with this is by dialing in your inventory when it comes to:
- Hardware
- Software
- Accounts
- Data
- Third Party Service Providers
- AI Tools

And, getting this inventory created (let alone current) can be one of the best places to start getting your house in order.
