In just over a week, the NBA arrives at The O2 London, and it looks set to play out in front of a crowd that has about as much energy as a funeral. 

The sheer volume of tickets still available for purchase this close to the event is insane, but what's more insane are the prices. The cheapest ticket available today is £241 (that's for a bad Level 4 nosebleed seat), but the average ticket price is significantly higher at approx £520.

The teams playing? Orlando Magic and Memphis Grizzlies. Two mid-table teams that lack significant star power and influence outside of the USA. 

The vast majority of casual basketball fans here in the UK won't know who 90% of the players are. 

I saw a video on Instagram earlier in which a fan figured out it would be CHEAPER to fly to Orlando, stay for 2 nights, and watch the Orlando Magic play at home, than it would be to purchase ONE Premium Seat for the London game at The O2. That is just madness. 

As someone who has attended several NBA games in both Europe and the US, I am astonished not only by the high prices of these tickets, but also by the fact that dynamic pricing hasn't kicked in the other way, and forced a substantial drop in prices to fill more seats. 

After all, isn't the dynamic pricing model based on demand? If so, it only seems to work in one direction...

Basketball is one of the most thrilling sports to watch live. Its speed and intensity don't let up for the entire game, plus the theatre of the half-time performances, cheerleaders, audience activations and more, make it feel as much like entertainment as it does live sport. 

Something American sports do better than any other sport is give audiences much more than just a game. The NFL, in particular, is the grandmaster of this, with game days being exactly that: days. They feel like goddamn festivals.

The NFL has also spent a significant amount of time and money building the profile of the game - and access to it - in the UK, and it has built a really strong fanbase because of it. 

The NBA, on the other hand, has not. For years, it's just relied on the likes of LeBron James, Stephen Curry, and Kevin Durant to generate casual interest among audiences outside the US, and now the likes of Luka Dončić and Victor Wembanyama.

But here's the kicker: none of those players play for the Orlando Magic or the Memphis Grizzlies. If they did, it might be a slightly different story.

It's unfortunate that what will almost certainly happen with the NBA London Game is that unsold seats will be given to influencers and minor celebrities, rather than The O2 / AXS / Ticketmaster accepting that the ticket prices are wildly out of touch, and making them much cheaper and more attractive to audiences. 

If the NBA wants to rival the NFL's market position in the UK, or merely give itself the chance to connect with newer prospective audiences across the pond, it needs to do much better than this, and do so quickly.
