I've hung my hat on this before, and I'll gladly do it again: Damon Albarn is, for my money, the single most important creative at work today. 

He is the dictionary definition of a polymath. Never satisfied or finished - just relentless in his ambition to keep learning more, and keep expanding horizons. 

He's also been at the periphery of artistic innovation and integrity for as long as I can remember. Constantly reinventing sounds, styles, and experiences, and blatantly rejecting what the status quo expects. 

I mean, who else has collaborated with well over 100 artists across countless genres, languages, and musical influences? The guy is the central thread that links Elton John, Grace Jones, Snoop Dogg, Stevie Nicks, Bruce Willis, Anoushka Shankar, and The National Orchestra for Arabic Music, to name but a few...

And who else has honestly stayed this creatively and culturally relevant for almost 40 years, without constant support and influence from media exposure? Damon famously hates interviews, and even now, you can see how uncomfortable the attention makes him. 

I think, in our increasingly AI-saturated and downright lazy age, we need creative radicals like Albarn more than ever. Visionaries with insatiable curiosity, thirst for knowledge, and the desire to keep collaborating. 

He's one of the very few people that I honestly think is a genius.

A few days ago, I saw this image on the BBC website. It was accompanied by the following line: "Jodie Comer stars in drama about real-life killer, John Christie". 

I was like, "No idea who that is, but anything with Jodie Comer is a yes from me". So I clicked through and watched. 

The show is a three-part mini series from 2016, called "Rillington Place", and it scared the absolute living daylights out of me. 

For the last day or so, I've been trying to put my finger on exactly what scared me so much, and why it's been playing on my mind. 

Sure, the material in its own right is horrid, but the show's telling of such events is the furthest thing from gratuitous. And besides, it's not like we're not already pre-exposed to an avalanche of dramas, or podcasts, or whatever else about true crime, is it?

This morning, the penny dropped. The reason it got to me so much wasn't just because what happened was real. It's because it was so subtly told.  

As mentioned, this show aired in 2016, so it's now a decade old. In that time, we've become so accustomed to pretty much everything we consume being so direct and immediate, that this show's quiet, creeping, perceptive nature got seriously under my skin. 

I feel like the art of subtlety is, or should be, more powerful now than ever. 

When every brand and internet personality is screaming for your attention, having the confidence to reject that logic and ask people to think a little, read between the lines, or listen to what's not being said will, I think, create deeper and more impactful creative experiences.

Imagine if brands were allowed to only communicate once per year. 

One single attempt to capture attention, pique curiosity, and light that all-important fuse. One chance to entrench your concept deep in a person's mind. 

We all know what the outcome would be. 

A kaleidoscope of brand micro-masterpieces. 
Intelligent, profound, artful, absurdist, unique, hilarious, and ambitious. 

The simple truth is that your brand can't fire on all creative and communicative cylinders all day, every day. 

Yet that's what seems to be expected. 

Your brand is expected to talk to customers day in, day out. Sometimes, multiple times per day. 

All that means is that 90% of your brand's creative output is forged around little more than necessity. Meaning that when you actually produce something that is legitimately "good", it's drowned out by a tidal wave of "we needed to get something out".

Truly great brand communication - the stuff that lives way beyond any campaign deadline or product launch date - comes around once in a blue moon. 

It's Cadbury's Gorilla, feverishly smashing his way through a Phil Collins drum solo. It's Old Spice, and the man you wish you could smell like. It's Guinness' surfer - tension climbing, followed tick, followed tock - as the rousing score swirls. It's Skittles, when everything Danny Glover touches turns into the delectable sweet treat.

The argument against great brand communication is always the same: budget. Businesses think you need a spot on Times Square, and a slot at the Super Bowl, to make a splash. 

You don't. 

You need to funnel more of your brand efforts into producing less, and producing better. 

You need to stop placing so much value on occupying as much of a person's timeline as possible, and start prioritising where you sit in their mind instead.
