I turned down $250K because of what Charlie Munger taught me.

The offer was simple: consult for a company selling overpriced courses to desperate entrepreneurs. Easy money. I needed it.

But I kept thinking about Munger's rule: "Don't sell anything you wouldn't buy yourself."

Would I buy their $5K course? No.

Would I recommend it to a friend? Hell no.

So why would I help them sell it?

The internal war was brutal. I had payroll coming up. My savings were thin. This one deal would solve everything.

But every time I tried to justify it, I felt sick.

I said no.

The next month was terrifying. I scrambled. I took smaller projects. I ate ramen more than I'd like to admit.

Then something shifted.

When you stop chasing money that feels wrong, you create space for opportunities that feel right.

Six months later, I landed a client whose product I genuinely believed in. The work energized me. The money came anyway.

Now I use Munger's rule as my filter for everything:

Would I buy this?
Would I use this?
Would I recommend this to someone I care about?

If the answer is no, I walk.

It's the most expensive filter I've ever used.

And the most profitable.

The dream is the proof.

Most people treat their idea like a problem.

Every generation is different. 

So why are you advertising like they're the same? 

From Baby Boomers to Gen Z, every generation has a fundamentally different relationship with advertising. 

What builds trust with a 58-year-old is not what builds trust with a 22-year-old.

The brands that scale understand this already. 

And they adapt their approach accordingly. 

Two things change with every generation:

1. What they respond to. 
↳ That includes everything they need to see and hear to trust a brand.

2. Where they consume it. 
↳ The channel, the format, and the context in which they encounter advertising.

Get one right without the other and you're still leaving reach on the table.

Here's how to advertise for every generation: 

✅ Baby Boomers (born 1946-1964)

- Respond to reliability, quality, and proven results. 
- They want to know what the product does and why it's worth their money. 
- Testimonials and authority signals carry real weight.

Focus on: TV, radio, print, direct mail, email, and Facebook

✅ Generation X (born 1965-1980)

- Skeptical of hype. 
- They've seen enough advertising to spot inauthenticity.  
- They need to be convinced, not entertained. 

Focus on: Email, search, Facebook, LinkedIn, podcasts, and direct offers

✅ Millennials (born 1981-1996)

- Want brands to stand for something. 
- They research before they buy and rely heavily on peer recommendations. 
- Authenticity is non-negotiable.

Focus on: Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, influencer partnerships, and reviews

✅ Generation Z (born 1997-2012)

- Filter advertising faster than any generation before them. 
- They trust creators more than brands. 
- Cultural relevance is the price of entry.

Focus on: Short-form video, creator content, and user-generated campaigns

The takeaway is simple: 

It's not a question of slightly diluting or shifting your message. 

Different generations require an entirely different delivery system.
