I turned down $250K because of what Charlie Munger taught me.

The offer was simple: consult for a company selling overpriced courses to desperate entrepreneurs. Easy money. I needed it.

But I kept thinking about Munger's rule: "Don't sell anything you wouldn't buy yourself."

What’s slowing you down isn’t perfectionism.
It’s the belief that everything you produce is a reflection of your competence.

You think:
If this isn’t polished, people will assume my work is subpar. 

If this page isn’t tight, it reflects my whole brand.

If this email sequence isn't smooth, it signals that my offer is low quality.

So you wait.

And polish.

And adjust.

Because everything “represents” you.

Right now for me, it's refining my email course....for the 3rd time.

But here’s what’s actually happening.

It's a human tendency to dramatically overestimate how closely people are scrutinizing you.

Psychologists call this the spotlight effect — first studied by Thomas Gilovich and colleagues at Cornell.

We consistently believe others notice and judge our flaws far more than they actually do.

Turns out....they don’t.

They’re busy thinking about themselves.

Think about hiring a realtor.

Have you ever seen one driving clients around in a car full of trash?

No.

Baseline competence matters.

Clean car. 
Functional. 
Professional.

But whether they’re driving the newest BMW or a clean, new-ish Nissan?

It barely changes your perception of their ability to negotiate a deal.

In fact, too flashy and you might start wondering who’s really benefiting from those commissions.

There’s a threshold.

Below it? It signals carelessness.
Above it? Diminishing returns.

And yet in business, we keep acting like every landing page, every caption, every first campaign has to clear some imaginary prestige bar.

Spoiler alert, it doesn’t.

When you delay launching because it doesn’t feel “polished enough,” you’re not protecting your brand.

You’re robbing yourself from a feedback loop.

(And feedback loops are what actually allow us to get better.)

Is this below the competence threshold…
Or am I overestimating the spotlight?

A principal's office, a broken laptop, a life lesson.
You’ll never guess what was written on the wall.

I'd received the dreaded call again.
My son was in the principal’s office.

This time, for throwing his Chromebook on the ground.

🤯 Shit. 

Sitting in the principal's office with my son, 
taking my own deep breaths
I saw a poster on the wall that read:

“You can’t pour tea into a full cup”

Well, isn’t that the truth.
Full cups happen to all of us, all the time.
At work, and in our personal lives.

And as my son was learning for himself,
That spilled hot tea leaves a nasty burn.

In my effort to make sense of the world around me, I did some research on what causes "full cup syndrome" and how we can overcome it. 

Thankfully, once you understand the science behind why our cups get full
You can free up space quickly and with minimal effort.

Here's what I learned:

Why:
✔️ When stress hormones get released - cortisol directly impairs short-term memory
✔️Emotions get triggered: causing our feeling brain to hijack our thinking 
✔️Minds get saturated: working memory innately has limited capacity
✔️Environments are distracting: cluttered spaces + constant notifications = cognitive overload
✔️Bodies experience pain: tension can occur when our bodies and minds disconnect. Too much of this and our neck/shoulders/back ache.

Here's how to get unstuck:
1️⃣ Acknowledge the block - name what’s happening without self judgment
2️⃣ Recognize the mental overload. This reduces its intensity
3️⃣ Declutter your space or work from a less cluttered place
4️⃣ Single-task instead of multi-task (I know, this one is hard!)
5️⃣ Plan (and actually take) breaks throughout the day

Most people don’t fail in the fire.  They fail in the waiting.
 
My mom is a potter.  

I grew up in a house that constantly smelled like wet clay and burnt dust from the kiln.
 
The wheel spinning.  
Tom Petty on the radio.  
Dog asleep at her feet.
 
And the occasional “oh for f*ck’s sake” when a bowl collapsed in on itself.
  
She’d slice the wire under it.  
Flatten it back into a lump.  
And start all over again.
 
When she finally made something she liked, it went into the kiln.
 
And then nothing happened.
 
No fixing.  
No tweaking.  
No “just checking.”
 
You do not open a kiln halfway through.  

If you pull it out too early, you ruin it.

The heat hasn't done its job yet.
 
This applies to running a business too.

We launch something, feel mild resistance, and then we pivot.

We don't let the heat do it's job. 

I’m running ads right now.
 
Old me would have shut them down after 72 hours and called it “being data-driven.”
 
This time I’m letting them run 14 days.

Because I've learned that with ads:
- Real data takes time
- Algorithms optimize with volume
- Impatience overrides intelligence
 
Whether its a new marketing strategy, a product launch, or pivoting your offer,
these are all moves that take time.

And heat.  
And reshaping.  

And yes, quite frequently, an expletive. 

My mom used to hesitate to sell her mugs.  
They were always too thick. Or too heavy. 
Or the glaze was messed up in that one spot.
 
Meanwhile people were offering $100 for them and my dad and I greeted the "fresh batch" out of the kiln with the excitement of my 7 year old on Christmas morning. 
 
All my mom could see were the flaws in what she had created.  
But the rest of us only saw value.
 
I've learned that entrepreneurship is painfully similar.
 
You don’t destroy good work by failing.
 
You destroy it by interrupting it before it has a chance to become anything.

Custom feels premium.
Systems feel boring.
Guess which one actually scales.

Consultants love the word “custom.”

I get it.

It signals care. Attention. Thoughtfulness.

But if you’re solving the same kind of problem
for the same kind of client
in roughly the same way each time…

is it really custom?

Or is it just familiar?

Most “custom” services aren’t custom.
They’re patterns that haven’t been written down yet.

And sometimes, if we’re honest, “custom” is just fear of packaging your thinking.

What if it doesn't work without you present?

I’ve worked with hundreds of consultants and the pattern is very predictable.

The ones who scale over $1M aren’t smarter.
They’ve just stopped reinventing their delivery every week.

I made this shift in my own business.

At first I resisted it.
I thought systemizing would remove me too much from delivery.
That quality would drop.

It didn’t.

We deliver faster now.
Our margins improved.
And my clients actually get more access to me.

Oh, and it's far less exhausting.

Here's what I've learned:
If something shows up three times, it’s not custom.
It’s a pattern.

Start looking for it, and you'll notice:

The same objections.
The same mistakes.
The same missing pieces.

That’s not random.
It's a method waiting to be systematized.

There are only three ways a service business grows:
Raise prices.
Add hours.
Or change the structure.

The first two keep you busy.
The third builds something durable.

The longer you protect “custom,”
the longer your income is tied to your energy.

Repeated explanations turn into curriculum.
Repeated steps turn into process.
Repeated decisions turn into leverage.

Goals help you win once.
Systems let you win without being the bottleneck.

Your competition won’t outthink you.

Execution delivers the other 95%.

That's not a rounding error. 
That's a 20x difference in impact.

And yet, most leaders still spend 90% of their time debating the 5%.

It's a sure fire way to kill good ideas.

Leading studies continue to show that time and again, companies that outperform their comeptitors aren't necessarily smarter or more creative. 

They've built something far more valuable - an organization that knows how to get things done. 

Great companies understand that:
 
(1) strategy without action is just theory
(2) action without learning is expensive chaos
(3) Disciplined execution creates compounding returns 

Think about it:

👉 Market feedback only comes when you give it something to react to
👉 Learning only happens through real-world testing
👉 Competitive advantage is built through iteration loops, not planning sessions

This is where leadership matters most.

Not in generating more ideas, but in building a culture that consistently turns strategic intent into tangible outcomes.

Here's what else is cool.

Research comparing human-led execution versus automated execution found that human-driven implementation retained up to 40% more of the original project value.

Why? 

Because as humans we adapt. 
We read the context. 
We iterate based on nuance.

Execution isn't about moving faster. It's about building the organizational muscle to:

✔️ Prioritize ruthlessly
Focus creates momentum. Saying no protects your capacity to deliver.

✔️ Test quickly
Run small experiments that generate learning, not just activity.

✔️ Iterate with intention
Each cycle should build institutional knowledge, not just check boxes.

✔️ Keep humans in the loop
AI can help, but human judgment is what preserves value through complexity.

✔️ Make execution a strategic competency
The best leaders treat delivery as a capability they deliberately build and refine.

Your competitive edge isn't in the quality of your next strategic offsite.

It's in whether your team can actually move from idea to implementation, consistently and at scale.

The teams winning right now aren't the best thinkers.

They're the best learners.

And learning only happens when you execute.
