With the skills and experiences I gained as a headhunter and executive recruiter hiring for companies large and small, I have an informed perspective on what goes into an effective resume, interview, and job search strategy.

I made my first hires as the founder of a college startup. Several years later I ventured into the world of recruiting so I could learn how to hire more effectively. For nearly a decade, companies hired me to hire well on their behalf or to help them build systems and processes to hire more effectively as an enterprise.

With Korn Ferry (NYSE: KFY), as a member of the Global Technology Officer's practice, I hired C-Level Executives for some of the most prominent companies in the world in a retained exclusive executive search format. 

With Cardlytics (NASDAQ: CDLX), I had the opportunity to design a comprehensive hiring process, configure and implement the enterprise applicant tracking system (ATS), and hire the global Chief Technology Officer. After helping to prepare the enterprise to hire at scale, the company executed a successful IPO.

After Cardlytics, I served as General Manager of the Austin division of a headhunting firm where I trained, developed, and provided leadership to a team of 18 technical recruiters who hired for companies like Bloomberg, HBO, Goldman Sachs, Amazon, Hulu, and ByteDance.

This recruiting experience helped me understand how to build an effective resume, search for a job efficiently, deliver outstanding interviews, and negotiate reasonable compensation packages.

I was in my safe LinkedIn bubble and then I went viral on Instagram

It was crazy

Context: filmed a street video with Chris Do in New York. 

Opening question (that I didn't know he'd ask) - "How much do you charge per hour?"

I run Coachvox but people ask if they can book me. They want to sell their business, build their personal brand, or travel while running their business. 

I can advise based on personal experience, so I have an hourly rate for consultancy calls. Lots of founders do this.

Anyway, the video went viral. 

1 million views in the first 48 hours. It's on 1.8 million now. Over 600 comments.

It was insane.

Grew by thousands of followers, got amazing messages and comments, enjoyed the practice run at being world famous.

But there was a dark side.

Trolls.

Comments asking if I was a hooker, slating my hair, my outfit. Saying I was full of sh*t. I mean... wow. And a bunch of the prostitute comments were from men who had daughters.

Anyway.

If you're sharing content online, going viral on that level could happen to you. 

Here's a ChatGPT prompt to simulate a vicious troll attack. 

So you can practice.

Copy and paste into ChatGPT and keep going until you tap out.

"Using what you know about me, simulate a troll attack as a simple game with a confidence meter and three escalating levels of negativity. In this game a sixty second street interview I appear in has gone viral with two million views. Most comments are positive but a small percentage are personal and negative. Start by giving me three options for what the video could be about based on my expertise and ask me to choose one or suggest another. When I choose, give me a starting confidence score from 0-10 and deliver one comment at a time. Give me a fast action key with letters for ignore, block, or respond. If I select respond, give me 3 options that I could respond with - for example to fight back, be clever, diffuse or share positivity. Context: I’m pretty chilled out. But some things make me MAD.

5 things I used to get mad about that I’m now letting go. 

1. People playing phone noises out loud

Who the hell does that? USE HEADPHONES! I don’t want to hear your conversation. I don’t want to watch your video. Neither does the whole restaurant. SHUT UP. You look like an idiot.

Now: Ignore the noise. Accept they’re just not my kind of person. Let It go.

2. Bad grammar

No, it’s “you’re” not “your”. Are you stupid? And you don’t Need To Capitalise Every Freaking Word. Did you not get taught this at school? Seasons don’t need capital letters. ARRRRGH! 

Now: Doesn’t matter. I knew what they meant. Let it go.

3. Kids on noisy iPads

Really?!?! Your kid brings their own TV? What the hell is going on? Do they REALLY need Peppa Pig at their side the entire day? Why did you have kids if you weren’t going to engage with them?

Now: I don’t have kids, I don’t know what it’s like. Let it go.

4. When coffee shop workers don’t tell me what’s next

You took my order and I paid. You said thanks. Great. What do I do now? Am I meant to guess? Do I sit down, wait here, wait somewhere else? Do you bring it over or do I collect? Do your job!

Now: Smile and politely ask them how I get my drink. Let it go.

5. When people ask for advice and don’t take it

You asked for help. I helped. Then you did the square root of f*ck all about it. Then you asked for help again, on the EXACT SAME TOPIC. I don’t understand?! Just take action, you know how! 

Now: Experience shares only. No attachment to the outcome. Let it go.

I built my (now sold) social media agency through networking and Google Ads. I had a Forbes column nearly the whole time but I didn't once write about social media marketing. We wasted a tonne of new client potential.
