The leverage is closer than you think.

I have sat with executives who routinely explore
what to pursue next.
New role. Bigger title. Different industry.

The breakthrough rarely came from chasing harder.
It came from strengthening the operator.

Here is what I have observed over time.

1️⃣ The people who get ahead build capacity before
 visibility.
• They deepen skills while others polish profiles.
• When complexity increases, their preparation shows.
• They do not scramble. They execute.
  
2️⃣  The most confident leaders rehearse privately.
• They think through scenarios before stakes rise.
• They practice hard conversations before they happen.
• Confidence follows preparation, not ego.
  
3️⃣  The most trusted individuals refine themselves
 continuously.
• After setbacks, they review decisions instead
of assigning blame.
• They ask for feedback without defensiveness.
• Over time, this habit builds credibility.
  
If you are unsure what to pursue next,
invest in the person making the choice.

When you organize the skills you have already earned,
someone further back benefits from what you now
execute naturally. 

That's leverage.

Whether true or not, words shared the right way
can change someone’s mind.
That’s influence.

Think about a sentence that stayed with you
longer than it should have.

Maybe it was a teacher saying,
“You’re capable of more than this.”

Maybe it was a manager saying,
“I’m not sure you’re cut out for that.”

Neither required a long speech.
Both could shift how you saw yourself.

That’s the point.

We talk about influence like it’s strategy, branding,
or persuasion.
Most of the time, it’s simpler than that.

It’s how you describe someone to themselves.

You can define people by their current situation.
Or you can define them by what
they are building toward.

You can correct someone
in a way that protects their effort.

Or in a way that makes them shrink.

Same facts.
Different impact.

If you are in a position where people listen,
your words travel further than you think.

They echo in decisions you will never see.
They shape risks people decide to take, or avoid.

This is not about being careful to the point of silence.

It’s about being focused with intent.

Before your next piece of feedback.
Before your next reaction in a tense moment.
Before your next comment about someone’s ability.

Ask yourself:

Am I describing who they are today,
or who they can become?

The real question is how you're using your words.
To build or to limit.

High performers are taught to endure.
But being always on
quietly erodes decision quality.

Almost everything
will work again
if you unplug it.

Including you.

You can be committed
without being constantly available.

You can care deeply
without draining yourself dry.

The most effective leaders I know
protect recovery with the same intention

Not as indulgence.

They act before certainty appears and let
consistency do the convincing.

The difference between momentum and frustration
is rarely talent.
It is how you honor the promises you make to yourself.

Pressure does not create progress.
It reveals what you practiced before it showed up.

Big declarations feel productive on a Monday.
They also fade fast when friction shows up.

What holds is quieter and more demanding.
It is keeping commitments when no one is cheering.

Six months from now will not negotiate.
They will simply reflect how you treated your own word.

Picture that future version of you.

We often hear the words:
“Don’t take things personally.”
“It’s just business.”

Right?

But when you watch this scene based on a true story 
it’s hard to escape one conclusion:

It’s all personal.

Especially when your livelihood, dignity, and identity are on the line.

So here’s the real question:

Are our work lives and personal lives truly separate?

Or have they always been the same life, just in different clothes?

When you’re starting out, the best thing you can have isn’t always talent. It’s someone who has your back.

Because let’s be real:

- Talent alone isn’t enough.
- Hard work only gets you so far.
- Without guidance, even the best potential can go unrealised.


And it’s not only when you’re young and new.

You might be:

- stepping into a promotion,
- shifting into a new field,

or starting over in a country that’s not your own.


That’s when it matters most to have:

- leaders,
- mentors,
- coaches,
- managers 

people who guide, support, and challenge you to rise.

Because when you know someone’s got your back:

- you take bigger risks,
- you achieve more,
- you grow faster

and most importantly, you don’t give up so easily.

The Chase 💨🏃 “Be careful what you wish for.”
We’re constantly chasing:

- The next bonus,
- The next promotion,
- The next big opportunity.

But at what cost?

Too often, we sacrifice:

- Our health,
- Our core values,
- Our relationships. 

In extreme cases, we work ourselves, sick!
Just to add some extra numbers to some spreadsheets.

Maybe it’s better to walk towards:

- fulfilment,
- finding meaning, 
- and making an impact…

This goes to show:

It’s not always what you do, how you do it, or even why you do it.

It’s who you do it with.

Especially when we’re young and choosing a profession,
we’re handed a long list of job titles and career paths.

Nurse. Engineer. Lawyer. Doctor. Consultant. Recruiter.

But nobody really teaches us how to choose the right environment.

Nobody trains us to ask:

- What is the leadership culture like?
- How high is staff turnover?
- Do the core values actually show up in daily behaviour?

Because if you really think about it…

Yes, the profession you choose shapes your life.

But the people you surround yourself with
shape it just as much.

Sometimes even more.

“I don’t just want to change. I need to change.”
That’s when change becomes an art. 

Once the decision is made, really made 
there’s no more hesitation.

“This is it.”
“I’m leaving.”
“I’m quitting.”
“I’m changing.” 💪

Now the only question is:

How do I get from A to B?

The obstacle is the same for everyone.
The way over it isn’t.

Some follow the obvious path.
Some create their own.

There’s usually always a way.

The key is finding the one that fits your style.
