Whether true or not, words shared the right way
can change someone’s mind.
That’s influence.

Think about a sentence that stayed with you
longer than it should have.

Maybe it was a teacher saying,
“You’re capable of more than this.”

Maybe it was a manager saying,
“I’m not sure you’re cut out for that.”

Neither required a long speech.
Both could shift how you saw yourself.

That’s the point.

We talk about influence like it’s strategy, branding,
or persuasion.
Most of the time, it’s simpler than that.

It’s how you describe someone to themselves.

You can define people by their current situation.
Or you can define them by what
they are building toward.

You can correct someone
in a way that protects their effort.

Or in a way that makes them shrink.

Same facts.
Different impact.

If you are in a position where people listen,
your words travel further than you think.

They echo in decisions you will never see.
They shape risks people decide to take, or avoid.

This is not about being careful to the point of silence.

It’s about being focused with intent.

Before your next piece of feedback.
Before your next reaction in a tense moment.
Before your next comment about someone’s ability.

Ask yourself:

Am I describing who they are today,
or who they can become?

The real question is how you're using your words.
To build or to limit.

I found a dream in my notebook from 2023.

"I will make an extra £708 per month” (not sure where the specificity came from, must have been going for a nice round number per year lol)

That was my dream as a fresh aspiring freelancer.

Seven hundred pounds to pad my 9-5 salary.

To maybe take the edge off.

To feel like I was building something beyond the prescribed path stretching out in front of me.

2.5 years later, I'm staring at that note with a business that somehow generates multiples of that £708 dream.

Mission accomplished, technically.

But f**k me, the last two years have been a masterclass in everything I didn't know about myself.

Turns out when you strip away the structure of employment - the assigned purpose, the external validation, the simple clarity of someone else's expectations - you're left with just you.

And you is sometimes not enough.

And sometimes you is everything.

Now I’ve had more doubts than I can count.

Full body anxiety about whether this is sustainable.

Whether I'm delusional.

Whether I should have just stayed comfortable.

There are days when running this business feels like the greatest privilege of my life.

Like I've unlocked some secret level of existence.

Then there are days where I stay up until 2am just to avoid tomorrow's work (believe this is called revenge bedtime procrastination).

That yo-yo of self-belief is genuinely weekly.

But I tell myself this is a rite of passage if you will.

Maybe it is, maybe it’s not.

But what I know for a fact is that this is working, and will continue to work.

Because everything I do is to build leverage for the people who matter to me.

Which means I conveniently have an absolutely unwavering need to persevere no matter what (helps quite a bit).

I want to give the people who believed in me from day one options in life they may otherwise not have.

Being able to validate that faith is the best feeling in the world.

Nothing else comes close.

2 years from now, I'll probably look back at today's revenue goals with the same amusement as I look at that £708.

The number always feels big until it doesn't.

The “dream” always feels impossible until it's Monday morning and you're living it.
