It came from strengthening the operator.

Here is what I have observed over time.

 continuously.

of assigning blame.
• They ask for feedback without defensiveness.
• Over time, this habit builds credibility.
  
If you are unsure what to pursue next,
invest in the person making the choice.

When you organize the skills you have already earned,
someone further back benefits from what you now
execute naturally.

Whether true or not, words shared the right way
can change someone’s mind.
That’s influence.

Think about a sentence that stayed with you
longer than it should have.

Maybe it was a teacher saying,
“You’re capable of more than this.”

Maybe it was a manager saying,
“I’m not sure you’re cut out for that.”

Neither required a long speech.
Both could shift how you saw yourself.

That’s the point.

We talk about influence like it’s strategy, branding,
or persuasion.
Most of the time, it’s simpler than that.

It’s how you describe someone to themselves.

You can define people by their current situation.
Or you can define them by what
they are building toward.

You can correct someone
in a way that protects their effort.

Or in a way that makes them shrink.

Same facts.
Different impact.

If you are in a position where people listen,
your words travel further than you think.

They echo in decisions you will never see.
They shape risks people decide to take, or avoid.

This is not about being careful to the point of silence.

It’s about being focused with intent.

Before your next piece of feedback.
Before your next reaction in a tense moment.
Before your next comment about someone’s ability.

Ask yourself:

Am I describing who they are today,
or who they can become?

The real question is how you're using your words.
To build or to limit.

But being always on
quietly erodes decision quality.

Almost everything
will work again

Today is Valentine’s Day.

For many people, it is a day about flowers, cards, and dinner reservations. For me, it is something far more personal. Six years ago today, at 34 years old, with two young children at home, I had a lifesaving pacemaker placed in my chest.

Just before that procedure, I fainted. My heart rate had dropped to 32 beats per minute, with a four second pause. Those four seconds changed everything.

I remember the fear and the uncertainty. I remember thinking about my boys and wondering what the future would hold. In that moment, nothing else mattered except being here for them.

Today, I am living fully and with deep purpose. Since receiving my pacemaker, I have run two marathons, one on the East Coast and one on the West Coast. I did not run them to prove anything to anyone. I ran them because every single mile is a reminder that this heart is still beating with intention.

This scar is not a symbol of weakness. It is a symbol of resilience, gratitude, and second chances.

On this Valentine’s Day, I celebrate love in a different way. I celebrate the physicians who listened. I celebrate my mom, who asked the hard questions when it mattered most. I celebrate my sons, who give me a reason to keep showing up every single day. I also celebrate this heart that continues to carry me forward.

If there is one thing I have learned, it is this: do not ignore your body. Ask questions. Advocate for yourself. Hold your loved ones close.

Life is a gift.

Later this month, my team and I will be spending time in the Dallas–Fort Worth region with one very important goal, to listen and learn.

Last year, I stood at the Stonewall National Monument for the first time as an openly gay man. I remember the weight of that moment. I remember feeling connected to the courage of those who came before me. I remember feeling grateful that their bravery created space for me to live more freely and more honestly.

Today, I am outraged.

The decision by the administration of Donald Trump to remove the Pride flag from Stonewall is not a small symbolic adjustment. It is a deliberate act that attempts to diminish visibility and rewrite history. Stonewall is not just a park. It is sacred ground. It represents resistance against oppression, dignity in the face of hatred, and the birth of a movement that changed this country.

When leaders choose to remove symbols of inclusion from a place built on the fight for equality, they are sending a message. They are choosing exclusion over belonging. They are choosing fear over love.

As someone who came out later in life, who worried about his children, his career, and his community, I do not take visibility lightly. The Pride flag at Stonewall is not decoration. It is a reminder that people risked everything so that future generations could live openly. Removing it does not erase us. It simply reveals who is willing to stand for love and who is not.

I refuse to be silent. I refuse to allow hate to define this moment. Love is louder. Truth is stronger. Our history will not be erased.

Throughout my life, I have been deeply blessed to always have my mom’s love and support.

When I fully embraced who I am, there was no hesitation from her. There was no distance and no conditions. There was only love.

I know that this is not the reality for so many within the LGBTQ+ community. Too many people experience rejection when they deserve unconditional acceptance. Too many are forced to navigate their lives without the steady support of a parent standing beside them.

My mom has been there for me every step of the way. She is my biggest supporter, my rock, and my confidant. Watching her love my three sons as the most incredible Oma fills my heart in ways I cannot fully express. The same unconditional love she poured into me is now shaping their lives.

As the son of a nurse, I learned what compassion looks like. As the son of this woman, I learned what unconditional love truly feels like.

If you are a parent reading this, please understand that your love matters more than you may ever realize. It can mean the difference between fear and freedom. It can mean the difference between hiding and healing. It can also mean the difference between life and death.

If you are someone still longing for that kind of acceptance, please know this: you are worthy of love exactly as you are!

Over the past few years, both my life and my leadership have transformed in ways I never expected.

I am the son of a nurse who taught me that healthcare is not just a profession. It is a calling rooted in compassion and service. I am a father to three incredible boys who remind me every day why the future of work matters. I am a leader who believes that love, dignity, and opportunity should exist in every workplace.

My professional work lives at the intersection of education and healthcare. I focus on building bridges between academia and health systems, developing workforce strategies that help employers rethink how they attract, prepare, and retain talent. That includes designing internship pathways, strengthening mentorship models, activating intermediaries, and advancing employer first partnerships that create sustainable talent pipelines.

However, what matters most to me is this.

Behind every workforce strategy is a patient. Behind every redesigned curriculum is a future nurse, technologist, therapist, or leader who deserves to feel confident and prepared. Behind every partnership is a human being seeking meaningful work and the opportunity to grow.

I believe we can build systems that are operationally strong and deeply human at the same time.

I am here to collaborate with healthcare executives, academic leaders, and innovators who are ready to move beyond discussion and into action. In the end, character shows up in behavior. Behavior shapes trust and trust shapes teams. Teams shape outcomes.

What if the greatest leadership skill is not having the right answer, but choosing to believe someone’s story?

This quote from Brené Brown caught my attention because empathy is not agreement. It is not fixing. It is not reframing someone’s pain into something more comfortable for us. It is the courage to sit across from someone and trust that their experience is real, even if it looks different from ours.

In life, this shows up in our closest relationships. As a father, it means listening to my sons without immediately trying to correct or protect. It means honoring their perspective, even when I see the world differently. Believing them builds trust. Trust builds connection.

In our work, especially in healthcare and education, this principle is everything. Do You Know What Sinus Bradycardia Is?

Most people do not.

Sinus bradycardia is a condition where the heart beats slower than normal, typically fewer than 60 beats per minute. While it can be harmless in some highly trained athletes, it can also signal a serious underlying issue in people of any age.

Too often it is brushed off as “runner’s heart.”
Too often it is minimized.
Too often symptoms are overlooked.

Over six years ago, after navigating multiple healthcare systems, countless appointments, tests, and procedures, I was finally diagnosed. The journey to get there was long and exhausting. There were moments of uncertainty. Moments of fear. Moments when I wondered if I was being heard.

I often say that I may not be here today if it were not for my mother. In my case, one morning I experienced a heart rate of 32 with a four second pause, captured by my then loop recorder.

She researched.
She asked hard questions.
She pushed when answers felt incomplete.
She refused to settle for surface explanations.

Her advocacy likely saved my life.

Heart Month is not just about statistics. It is about awareness. It is about listening to your body. It is about asking questions. It is about second opinions. It is about empowering families to advocate when something does not feel right.

If you experience dizziness, fatigue, fainting, shortness of breath, or unexplained weakness, please do not ignore it. A slow heart rate is not always a sign of peak fitness.

We need more curiosity in medicine.
We need more listening.
We need more advocacy.

I am truly encouraged by the recent announcement from MUSC highlighting the launch of a radiologic technologist apprenticeship to help address critical workforce shortages. This is exactly the kind of thoughtful, forward-looking solution our healthcare system needs, one that blends education, hands-on experience, and paid employment while keeping patient care at the center.

This initiative is especially meaningful to me on a personal level. During my time at Siemens, I had the opportunity to play a small role in early conversations by sharing best practices, connecting MUSC with other healthcare systems that were exploring similar earn-and-learn models, and supporting dialogue focused on sustainable workforce pathways. Seeing this work come to life reinforces the power of collaboration across health systems, education partners, and industry.

Apprenticeships like this do more than address immediate staffing needs. They expand access, create dignity in work, and open doors to long-term careers for individuals who may not otherwise see themselves in healthcare. Most importantly, they help ensure that communities have access to the skilled professionals who make high-quality care possible every day.
I am excited to see how this program grows and the impact it will have on learners, teams, and patients alike.

Standing on the Golden Gate Bridge, you cannot help but feel awe.

The engineering. The history. The way it stretches boldly across the water, connecting land and people. It is breathtaking.

As someone who has faced my own mental health challenges, I do not take that lightly. I know what it feels like to carry silent weight. I know how easy it can be to smile on the outside while fighting something on the inside.

Beauty and brokenness can exist in the same space. Strength and struggle can live in the same heart.

There is a difference between disagreeing with someone and denying their humanity, and too often we blur that line. This image captures a truth that I learned the hard way, through lived experience rather than theory.

When I finally understood who I truly was and chose to live authentically, it became painfully clear how people, even those close to me, would react. Some responded with love and curiosity. Others created distance. And a few attempted to mask rejection by calling it a “difference of opinion,” as if my existence itself were something they could debate. That realization was deeply painful and profoundly eye opening.

We can disagree on ideas, beliefs, and perspectives. What we cannot do, without causing real harm, is politely disagree with someone’s right to exist, to love, or to live as their whole self. When we do, we are not standing on principle. We are stripping away dignity.

I am sharing this because far too many people are still shrinking themselves to make others comfortable. They are hiding parts of who they are because the world has taught them that authenticity comes at a cost. We do not need more judgment disguised as civility. We need more empathy, more courage, and more people willing to say, “You belong.”

This is a leadership issue. In our workplaces, our families, and our communities, leadership should always lift people up, not tear them down.

There was a moment on this trip to San Francisco where I simply paused.

Every year, tens of thousands of students want to enter imaging programs but can’t. At the same time, health systems face staffing shortages that directly impact patient access to diagnostic care. This isn’t a talent problem, it’s a systems problem.
