Whether true or not, words shared the right way
can change someone’s mind.
That’s influence.

Think about a sentence that stayed with you
longer than it should have.

Maybe it was a teacher saying,
“You’re capable of more than this.”

Maybe it was a manager saying,
“I’m not sure you’re cut out for that.”

Neither required a long speech.
Both could shift how you saw yourself.

That’s the point.

We talk about influence like it’s strategy, branding,
or persuasion.
Most of the time, it’s simpler than that.

It’s how you describe someone to themselves.

You can define people by their current situation.
Or you can define them by what
they are building toward.

You can correct someone
in a way that protects their effort.

Or in a way that makes them shrink.

Same facts.
Different impact.

If you are in a position where people listen,
your words travel further than you think.

They echo in decisions you will never see.
They shape risks people decide to take, or avoid.

This is not about being careful to the point of silence.

It’s about being focused with intent.

Before your next piece of feedback.
Before your next reaction in a tense moment.
Before your next comment about someone’s ability.

Ask yourself:

Am I describing who they are today,
or who they can become?

The real question is how you're using your words.

In one company I worked with, the CEO loved saying,

We’re not a company.
We’re a family.

It sounded warm.

People clapped in town halls.
It looked good on slides.

But a few months later, something happened.

A team member disagreed with a strategy decision.
Calmly. Respectfully.

After the meeting, she was told,
We don’t challenge leadership like that here.

That’s when I realized something.

because of a weak email.

Most people blame the job market.
Or competition.

But sometimes,
the problem isn’t your experience.

It’s your first impression.

When you send your resume,
you’re not just attaching a file.

You’re showing:
- How you communicate

A blank email with just an attachment?
That already says something.

And not the right thing.

Here’s how to do it better:

1. Use a professional email address
If your email sounds casual or outdated,
it reduces trust instantly.

Keep it clean.
Simple.
Professional.

2. Write a clear subject line
Hiring managers receive hundreds of emails.

“Resume” is not enough.

Be specific.
Mention the role.
Mention your name.

Make it easy for them.

3. Address the right person
If you know the name, use it.
If not, keep it respectful.
