The architecture of human choice operates through a simple but unforgiving mechanism: people do not buy products; they hire solutions to resolve systemic struggles in their lives. This insight is the core of Jobs-To-Be-Done theory, developed with Clayton Christensen in the mid-1990s to explain the causal link between customer struggle, context, and market behavior.

My career began in engineering, where the discipline is to deconstruct systems until the underlying dynamics become visible. That technical training, combined with direct mentorship from W. Edwards 
Deming and Genichi Taguchi revealed a critical pattern: innovation endures not because more features are added, but because meaningful struggles are resolved in a repeatable way. Their emphasis on systems thinking and designed experimentation created a cognitive scaffolding that now governs how I architect products, go-to-market motions, and growth systems.

Across more than 3,500 product launches—from automotive and consumer goods to defense and complex B2B systems—the same causal mechanism shows up. Offerings that win long-term do not merely occupy a category; they integrate into the customer’s progress system: the way a person moves from “this is no longer acceptable” to “this finally works for me.” This integration of struggle, context, and desired outcome produces a fundamentally different innovation lens than traditional attribute-based segmentation.

The Re-Wired Group exists to operationalize this lens at scale. Instead of chasing personas or demographics, we map the causal chains that drive a customer to fire one solution and hire another, then translate those patterns into product strategy, pricing logic, sales language, and organizational focus. My books, including Demand-Side Sales 101 and Learning to Build, codify these dynamics into practical frameworks leaders can use to design around human progress rather than feature roadmaps.

The strategic implication is profound: when teams stop “building things” and start enabling progress, value creation compounds through the customer’s success system, not the company’s launch calendar. This reframes product‑market fit as progress‑market fit—where solutions plug cleanly into the lived reality of the people who hire them and every improvement deepens the causal fit between how people choose and how the business grows.
