RecoveryPark is a planned community redevelopment project for the city of Detroit that will include urban farming, education, commercial and housing development along with other projects that visions the rebuilding of a partner community with an eye toward financial and environmental self-sustainability.   It is a projected 10-year, multi-million dollar project that will help the city and its residents recover through personal and economic empowerment.  You can download the RecoveryPark story here.

The Story of RecoveryPark is a narrative about how a collaborative effort can lead to neighborhood economic recovery through projects like urban farming. The narrative shows how urban farming can impact the local economy through job creation and neighborhood improvements. Jobs are created directly through urban farming activities and many more jobs are created in downstream activities such as food processing, packaging, and logistics.

A growing Leadership Task Force, representing more than 25 collaborative partners in the areas of government, education, art,  finance and philanthropy has been formed to help with the outreach, design, support and strategic planning for this project. This broad-based coalition, spearheaded by SHAR Foundation, is vested and committed to helping the city recover through this innovative project.  

This coalition believes urban farming and constructive land re-purposing is essential to the city for five reasons:  space, money, human capital, environmental, and economic sustainability.

Here’s how I see it:

Curiosity-Driven: A great question stems from genuine curiosity. It’s about wanting to understand the "why" behind something, not just the "what." This kind of question invites exploration and reflection.

Open-Ended: Instead of leading to a simple yes or no, a great question encourages expansive thinking. It allows for multiple perspectives and insights, which can lead to unexpected discoveries.

Contextual: It takes into account the situation and the people involved. A question that resonates with the context is more likely to yield meaningful responses. It's about understanding the environment and the dynamics at play.

Provocative: It challenges assumptions and pushes boundaries. A great question can make people pause and reconsider their preconceived notions, opening the door to innovation.

Empathetic: It considers the emotions and motivations of the person being asked. By showing empathy, a question can create a safe space for honest and open communication.

Purposeful: It has a clear intention behind it. Whether it’s to uncover a need, solve a problem, or spark creativity, a great question is aligned with a specific goal.

I find "Best practices" often get touted as the gold standard in many industries, but here's the thing, in my experience I find that they can actually be quite limiting. Why? Because they tend to lock us into a fixed way of thinking, assuming that what worked before will work again. But in reality, the world is constantly changing, and so are the challenges we face.

The problem, as I see it, with best practices is that they often stem from past successes, which might not be relevant in today's context. They can stifle innovation by discouraging experimentation and adaptation. When we rely too heavily on them, we risk missing out on new opportunities and insights that could lead to breakthroughs.

I was taught almost 40 years ago a very different approach in Japan called continuous improvement. It's a mindset that embraces change and encourages us to constantly seek better ways of doing things. Instead of sticking to a rigid set of rules, continuous improvement is about being open to new ideas, testing them, and learning from both successes and failures.

This approach creates a culture of curiosity and resilience, where teams are empowered to challenge the status quo and drive meaningful progress. It’s about focusing on the process, not just the outcome, and understanding that there’s always room for growth.

In a rapidly evolving world, continuous improvement is not just a better perspective, it's essential for staying relevant and competitive. For example, where ai is reinventing so many things, it is making most best practice obsolete and is a way better mind set to embrace this new technology. What are your thought on this? As thanksgiving is tomorrow in the USA, I'm thankful for the opportunity to learn and grow every day. The journey of understanding customer struggles and helping businesses innovate has been incredibly rewarding. I'm grateful for the mentors and collaborators who have shaped my thinking, like Clayton Christensen, Dr. Deming, and Dr. Taguchi. Their insights have been invaluable in developing the Jobs-To-Be-Done framework and applying it across so many different industries.

I'm also thankful for the chance to share these ideas with others—whether it's through workshops, books, or speaking engagements. Seeing people and organizations make real progress by adopting a customer-centric mindset is truly fulfilling. I was listening to a Rush tune yesterday and one lyric resonated with me - “the far unlit unknow” in the song subdivisions (yes I am old) and it reminded me of a quote from my mentor Dr. Genichi Taguchi: "There is way more unknown than known and never forget it." These simple yet profound statements serves as a powerful reminder of the vastness of what we have yet to learn and understand. (which make life exciting)  

In our pursuit of progress, it's easy to fall into the trap of assuming we have all the answers. But the truth is, the unknowns far outweigh the knowns. Embracing this mindset keeps us humble, curious, and open to new possibilities. It encourages us to experiment, ask questions, and continuously seek out new insights.

This perspective is crucial for anyone involved in innovation, whether you're developing new products, exploring new markets, or simply trying to understand your customers better. By acknowledging the limits of our knowledge, we create space for growth and discovery.

“We Had $500K Left and No Idea What Our Customers Actually Wanted”
The CEO was desperate.

His video editing startup had burned through $7.5 million. User feedback was contradictory: “Make it easier!” and “Make it more sophisticated!” coming from the same user base.

They’d tried persona-based segmentation. Built features for one group, and the other group hated them. Back and forth, back and forth, until they were down to their last half million.

That’s when they called Bobby Moesta.
“I’ll do Jobs-to-be-Done with you,” Bobby said, “but you have to be a case study.”

They interviewed just 10 customers. Not personas. Not demographics. Just 10 real people about the moment they decided to buy.

What they discovered changed everything:
Job 1: “I don’t know what video is, but I’ve been told we need more video content. Help me prove I can do this.”
Job 2: “I make money from videos. Help me make them faster because more videos = more money.”
Job 3: “I’m a pro using Final Cut, but I need something quick for specific use cases.”

The breakthrough? They weren’t competing with Canva or Adobe.
They were competing with TikTok.
Their real customers were people who’d tried to make videos on TikTok and failed. “You tried TikTok and couldn’t make it work? Come to us.”

Seven months later: 25 million users. $50 million in revenue.
The difference wasn’t better features or smarter segmentation. It was understanding the moment that made someone ready to buy.

Most companies think they know what triggers their customers to purchase. But when I ask CEOs “What has to happen to your customer today for them to say ‘I need your product’?” - they go blank.
If you can’t answer that question, you’re building features, not solving problems.
