Rohan Kamath was born somewhere and then he grew up (or so they say). Along the way, he attended a fancy university where he learned about important things like student loans and insurance. He then worked for a couple of famous people named Jeff and Satya. He has been birding since he was 6 years old, but his favorite bird is still a mean Tandoori Chicken.

When he’s not writing about himself in the third person, Rohan spends most of his time outdoors hiking and birding in the Pacific Northwest with his wife Pk and his puppy Albus. Rumor has it that he builds Products at Stripe although he not-so-secretly wishes he was a chef so that he could forever feed the fat kid inside him who refuses to grow up.

He is extremely passionate about learning new things and obsessively and consistently reads books daily. He also writes on Quora where his work has been read a few times, and on LinkedIn, where people think he's bonkers. He thinks he’s sarcastic and hilarious. However, most people find him obnoxious and annoying.

Used serverless infra and managed services by AWS such as API Gateway, Lambda, DynamoDB, S3, CloudSearch, and Kinesis Data Streams to prevent initial upfront costs and eliminate scaling related challenges

Built an OTT entertainment platform using cutting-edge, cost-effective tech from the best of platforms, third-party services and open-source tech.

Architected the entire OTT platform from concept to reality. This includes architecting the web and mobile apps and single-handedly building the entire backend.

Created the specs to get media in appropriate formats from media and production houses and then process them to make them readily available for streaming.

Built my own authentication and authorisation solution which is OIDC and oAuth2.0 compliant (almost) to move away from an unimaginably expensive third-party solution.

Integrated with other third-party services such as Akamai, Razorpay, Twilio, 2factor, etc to add capabilities such as global content delivery/streaming, payments, SMS, etc.

Advised colleagues from my team and the entire org on best practices and ways to improve their existing workflows be it writing code, analysing problems, making informed decisions business or otherwise, automating chores, etc.

Some top achievements -

1. All independent APIs performing within ~ < 30 ms p95 response times.
2. Zero downtime for straight 1.5 years i.e. since the platform was made live.
3. Utilised tools and services to track all activity at the backend and persist them until needed.
4. Implemented API driven force update using app version whitelists.
5. Templated media conversion on top of AWS Elemental MediaConvert with the ability to create a lot many jobs with varying input configurations and input files.

Finally, always monitored the outgoing expenses and pivoted our implementations to minimise upfront cash burn and prolong our sustainability.
