In this role, I researched statues and case law to build internal memos and reports on City Council legislation, defending against challenges to City Council laws governing labor, healthcare, and small businesses.

This role involved engagement with the New York City Conflicts of Interest Board on behalf of Council Members and staff.

Most days, our job isn’t “design the best experience.”
It’s “design the best experience we can ship with the team we actually have.

- Users don’t care about our constraints.
- Engineers don’t care about our Dribbble dreams.
- PMs don’t care about either if we miss the release date.

So we live in the tension:
- You know the ideal flow should be 3 steps, but the backend only supports 5.
- You want that smart inline validation, but engineering only has time for a generic error modal.

You’re pushing for accessibility, while someone says “we’ll fix that later.”
The older I get in this field, the less I see it as “users vs devs”
 and more as “team vs problem.”

The real skill is not picking a button. It’s reframing the question:
👉 What’s the smallest thing we can ship that’s kind to users
 and doesn’t crush the dev team?

That means:
1. Involving engineers in discovery, not just handoff
2. Mapping effort vs impact together, not in separate silos
3. Being honest when a “tiny tweak” is actually 3 weeks of work
4. Protecting non-negotiables (accessibility, clarity) and flexing on the rest

When you do that, devs stop seeing you as “the pixel police.”
 They start seeing you as a partner who helps them win too.

Because at the end of the day, the most user-friendly interface
 is the one that shipped… not the one sitting in Figma.

As a designer, the animations that impress me most aren’t the flashy “look what After Effects can do” ones.

It’s the ones that actually use the context of the interface.
Not just a spinner.
Not just a card sliding in from a random direction.

But motion that borrows from what’s already on the screen:
existing shapes, patterns, system elements, even the hardware itself.

It feels smart because it does two jobs at once:
✨ It explains what’s happening
✨ It entertains you a little while it’s happening

No extra UI. No new weird element users have to learn.
Just the product playfully reusing its own language.

Context-aware motion transforms waiting, loading, or state changes into a brief narrative.
You instantly understand where something came from and where it’s going, because the animation started from a place you already recognize.

Do your animations help users understand where things come from and go, or do they just fade in/out?
