The 2025 ERCOT #batterystorage market saw a significant shift in revenue patterns compared to previous years. Analysis of the annual revenue distribution shows a flattening of the returns curve, as the market moved away from its historical reliance on a few high-volatility days.

In prior years, a handful of days determined the success of the entire fiscal year. Between 2022 and 2024, the 30 highest-revenue days typically accounted for 44% to 68% of annual totals. Some individual days contributed as much as 9% to the yearly bottom line.

In 2025, that concentration dropped. The top 30 days accounted for only 30% of annual revenue, and no single day exceeded a 3% contribution. This indicates a market where consistent, daily operational execution has become more important than waiting for a single "black swan" event.

This revenue flattening is directly tied to Texas weather patterns. The summers of 2023 and 2024 were defined by extended periods where daily high temperatures far exceeded 15-year historical averages. These heatwaves created the price spikes that batteries utilize for high-margin discharge.
By contrast, the summer of 2025 tracked historical norms closely. Without the thermal stress on the grid that drives extreme price volatility, the opportunities for outsized daily returns did not materialize.

The sheer size of the battery fleet, which grew to 14 GW by the end of 2025, also played a role in dampening these spikes. As more storage capacity becomes available to meet peak demand, the "peaks" themselves are naturally lowered. This suggests that even in future high-heat scenarios, the massive buildout of storage may continue to compress the revenue potential of individual assets.

For market participants, these data points highlight a transition. The reliance on a few high-priced summer days is being replaced by a need for sophisticated bidding strategies that capture smaller margins across a larger number of days. Success in the current ERCOT landscape is increasingly defined by duration and the ability to navigate a saturated ancillary services market.

Alexis Takoushian is a Program Manager at Pennsylvania Solar Center, where she supports project development and policy analysis to help expand equitable access to renewable energy. Along with her role at Pennsylvania Solar Center, Alexis is beginning her term as the Associate Director for WRISE Pittsburgh! 

Her path into the industry started in graduate school, where she focused on energy and environmental policy and became interested in climate resiliency. Seeing how solar energy can directly support communities helped turn that interest into a career, and she’s been working to make renewables more accessible ever since.

One project Alexis is especially proud of was supporting a local community center serving the Latino community as they successfully contracted with a solar developer. The project not only helped bring clean energy and cost savings to the organization but also centered community needs and helped build local capacity along the way. It’s the kind of work that shows how meaningful the energy transition can be when it’s rooted in people first.

Her advice for anyone starting out in this field: build relationships early and stay connected with people doing interesting work. Alexis actually found her current role through WRISE, and she credits networking with peers and mentors for opening doors she wouldn’t have found through job postings alone.

For Alexis, being part of Women of Renewable Industries and Sustainable Energy (WRISE) means having a fun and welcoming space where women can come together, make meaningful connections, and strengthen their sense of belonging in the industry. It’s a reminder that careers grow stronger when we grow them together.

Ohio lawmakers are considering a bill that could significantly limit new utility-scale wind and solar development under the banner of affordability and reliability. While energy security is an important goal, narrowing the state’s energy options at a time of growing electricity demand raises serious concerns.

Ohio is seeing rapid load growth from new industries and data centers, which means the grid will need additional generation from a variety of sources. Natural gas, nuclear, energy storage, and renewables each play different roles in supporting reliability and price stability. A diversified approach gives the state more flexibility as market conditions and technology continue to evolve.

Utility-scale solar and wind are not without tradeoffs, and communities should have a voice in how projects are developed. However, policies that broadly restrict these resources could limit Ohio’s ability to attract investment and maintain competitive energy prices as demand rises.

The political debate around this bill will likely be challenging, but long-term energy policy should focus on adaptability rather than limiting future solutions. Keeping options open will better position Ohio to meet rising energy needs while protecting consumers and supporting economic growth.

In January, I started a new chapter in my career, forming Transmission Fox, LLC, a software and energy consulting company. Over my career, I have noticed that model inputs are not always scrubbed, mainly due to limited software licenses or difficulty using software. My desire for better power flow modeling led me to write software, Transmission Fox, to make power flow models more accessible to all stakeholders. 

Transmission Fox is a free, self-contained program that allows users to load multiple .RAW power flow models, allowing them to run quick, comparative analytics (peak load comparison, generation comparison, etc), export all of the data into SQL-like Excel sheets, and most importantly, visualize the grid. The grid visualization package shows the .RAW files either on a map or as a one-line, allowing users to check the model topology. I believe that having more eyes on models will improve the quality, speed, and results.
