Reports and videos are circulating this evening of a Cleveland Public Power (CPP) substation explosion here in Cleveland.

At this time, no news has covered this. There is chatter about widespread outages across parts of the city and reports of multiple local transformers failing as well.

Moments like this are a reminder of how critical grid resilience, maintenance, and transparent communication are for communities.

It also comes as Ohio energy interests continue to lobby for expanded power outage allowances.

Hoping everyone affected stays safe and power is restored quickly.

Ohio is often described as a challenging market for utility-scale solar. This week’s Ohio Supreme Court decision helps explain why that narrative may need updating.

The Ohio Supreme Court upheld the Ohio Power Siting Board approval of a 130 MW utility-scale solar project, reaffirming a key principle: courts will not overturn OPSB decisions unless they are clearly unlawful or unreasonable.

Why this matters for developers:
• OPSB authority was reinforced. The Board remains the primary decision-maker on utility solar siting, not the courts.
 • Appeals based on aesthetics, generalized property value concerns, or community discomfort are unlikely to succeed on their own.
 • A complete, evidence-backed OPSB record carries real legal weight and is given deference on appeal.
 • Developers are not required to exhaustively quantify speculative negative impacts unless explicitly required by statute or rule.

This does not eliminate local opposition, referenda risk, or political headwinds. Ohio remains complex. 

The takeaway is straightforward. If a project meets statutory requirements and is supported by a strong OPSB record, Ohio courts are signaling they will stand aside.

For a market often viewed as unpredictable, that kind of legal clarity is meaningful.

The digital world rests on a physical foundation of roughly 11,800 data centers scattered across the globe. While the internet feels ethereal, its heart beats in specific geographic hubs that mirror global economic power. The United States maintains a staggering lead by housing 5,381 facilities. This concentration stems from the massive footprint of hyperscalers like Amazon and Google alongside a robust domestic appetite for cloud services.

Europe follows with a dense network led by Germany and the United Kingdom, which host 521 and 514 centers respectively. These nations, along with France and the Netherlands, prioritize data sovereignty and local enterprise needs. Meanwhile, the Asia Pacific landscape is shifting rapidly. China currently holds 449 facilities, but countries like India and Japan are expanding their infrastructure to support burgeoning fintech and manufacturing sectors.

Connectivity hubs like Singapore and Australia serve as vital gateways for their respective regions. Beyond these powerhouses, Canada and Brazil lead their territories by leveraging stable political climates or massive regional demand. The distribution of these centers is not accidental. It signals where energy is available, where laws are favorable, and where the next wave of AI development will likely take root. As data localization laws become more stringent, infrastructure will likely sprawl into emerging markets across Africa and the Middle East.

Northern Virginia's data center alley is already seeing high prices, yet this is merely a prelude to the main event. Local meteorologists from the NWS and Capital Weather Gang predict the core of the storm won't impact the northern load pocket until the early morning hours tomorrow.

While the heaviest ice accumulation currently tracks south of the primary demand centers, mixed precipitation will likely blanket the entire Dominion zone. This weather pattern threatens the reliability of large combined cycle plants in central and southern Virginia. 

These facilities face a dual risk: potential fuel supply disruptions and structural damage to the transmission lines connecting them to the grid.

My learning process begins with reading and continues through writing. That is the beauty of articles, books, and lessons. They do not go away. 

Over the holiday break, I read Enron After All: A History of Our Broken Energy Paradigm from American Affairs, and it reframed something I think many of us in the power sector feel but rarely articulate.

Enron is usually remembered as a fraud story. What this essay argues instead is that Enron was also a systems designer. It helped shape the market based energy paradigm we still operate in today. Deregulated electricity markets, heavy reliance on natural gas, short term price signals, and the belief that competition alone would deliver reliability and decarbonization.

The uncomfortable takeaway is that many of today’s grid challenges are not bugs. They are features of the system we inherited.

Markets optimized for trading and efficiency do not naturally incentivize long term reliability, grid hardening, or investment in clean firm resources. At the same time, climate policy has been layered on top of these markets rather than built into them, creating tension between short term economics and long term system needs.

This helps explain why we keep running into the same debates around capacity, reliability, gas dependence, and who pays for resilience. It also helps explain why incremental fixes often feel insufficient.

If we want a grid that is reliable, affordable, and decarbonized, we probably need to be more honest about the limits of the current paradigm and more open to redesign. That might mean stronger planning signals, long term contracts, or market structures that explicitly value reliability and public outcomes rather than assuming they will emerge on their own.

We are still living in a system shaped decades ago. The question is whether we are willing to rethink it before the constraints rethink us.

On my way in to work this morning, I listened to The Wall Street Journal's The Journal podcast on the power grid’s challenge with the AI boom, and it really solidified how I think about energy infrastructure and tech growth in general

AI is not just transforming software. It is transforming electricity demand. The rapid buildout of data centers to power AI is now pushing parts of the U.S. grid to its limits, especially in high growth regions like Northern Virginia’s data center corridor. Grid operators like PJM are seeing electricity demand rise at unprecedented rates while older plants retire faster than new capacity comes online. That raises real concerns about reliability, rising consumer rates, and supply constraints during peak events.

What stood out most is how misaligned our systems are. Software and AI can scale in months, but grid upgrades take years. Reliable and affordable power is not just an energy issue. It underpins long term economic competitiveness, technological leadership, and resilience.

If we want an AI enabled future, we have to invest in the physical systems that make it possible. The conversations happening today about grid planning, data centers, and generation mix will define the limits of growth tomorrow.

🔌 Are We Building a Grid That Depends on Big Tech to Stay On?

AI and data centers are scaling faster than our electric grid was designed to handle. In response, a quiet shift is underway.

Utilities are increasingly relying on large data center customers to voluntarily curtail load during periods of grid stress rather than building sufficient firm capacity to meet peak demand.

That approach may be efficient in the short term. It is risky in the long term.

Data centers are among the largest loads on the system, but they are not utilities.

They have no obligation to serve the public.
They can shift future growth to other regions.
They optimize for uptime, not system reliability.

Yet reliability planning is beginning to assume their cooperation during extreme conditions.
That is not resilience. It is dependency.

During heat waves or cold snaps, grid operators may need hyperscalers to shed significant load to avoid reliability failures. If curtailment does not occur, the consequences are borne by customers and communities, not the private load.

This is not a criticism of data centers. It is a governance and planning issue rooted in misaligned incentives.

A resilient grid cannot rely on voluntary cooperation to function.


If AI is going to power the economy, the grid powering AI must be built to stand on its own.

As an arctic blast moves into Texas and the southern U.S., grid reliability is once again in focus.

ERCOT reports that the Texas grid is positioned to meet expected winter peak demand, with generation capacity projected to exceed forecasted load. Utilities, including CPS Energy and Austin Energy have pointed to added capacity, winterization efforts, and operational preparedness as key improvements since 2021.

At the same time, analysis around Winter Storm Fern highlights an important nuance: adequate generation does not eliminate outage risk. Ice accumulation and freezing rain can still damage transmission and distribution infrastructure, leading to localized outages even when bulk power supply is sufficient.

This reinforces a critical lesson for the industry:
• Grid resilience is about more than reserve margins
• Distribution-level vulnerability remains a weak point in extreme weather
• Weather volatility is now an operational assumption, not an exception

As Fern approaches, this moment underscores why resilience planning, infrastructure hardening, and diversified resources, including storage, remain central to reliable power systems.
