My team supports data loads for investment analysis, using Apache Airflow. My work includes
- Designing and implementing a system for responsive data updates, reducing delay from hours or days to 10s of minutes, triggering ETL jobs from the AWS messaging systems.
- Working with upstream data providers to ensure a robust interface between our services.
- Designing and helping implement automated caching for test data, enabling more performant and reliable testing, and spotting bugs earlier in development.
- Onboarding external teams into our ETL platform, offering ongoing support, and helping an external team set up their own Airflow system.
- Designing and implementing tooling to reduce set up time from hours to 10s of minutes.

I supported both the investment and data teams. My projects included

- Deploying and optimizing our quantitative developer's algorithms - what took 6 hours now takes 45 seconds allowing rapid portfolio analysis.
- Designing and building a data pipeline including machine learning models, transforming external data for analytics and in our customer-facing systems.
- Heading up the effort to build an interface for anonymised customer data.

I also ensured the data team worked effectively with the engineering team, and that our systems were robust and fit for purpose. This included introducing cloud tools to allow the data team to straightfowardly manage our own infrastructure and introducing automated testing.

Cloud technologies used include GCP - serverless, both Cloud Functions and Cloud Run, databases - BigQuery and RDB with PostgreSQL, Docker.

Other skills used include; Python - GCP libraries, SQLAlchemy, pytest, Invoke, some Dash, Flask, Numpy and Pandas. TDD, project design, parallel programming, Linux.

Speechmatics

Speechmatics converts speech to text. I automated building language models, resulting in over 20 new languages being supported in year where the target was 10 (previously 2 languages were supported).

I gathered the initial specification with the speech engineers and, based on the legacy code base, I designed the pipeline and database. My team then built, tested and ran it.

Building on this success, I redesigned the structure of the underlying machine learning libraries to increase the performance, stability and portability, which my team then implemented.

I used Python and the Luigi batch processing framework, with SQLAlchemy and Postgres databases, and Fabric for process automation. I helped drive the adoption of coding best practices, including automated testing, continuous integration and code review.

I designed and implemented a custom algorithm for fantasy sports that drives a new web-based product range. Raire provides the best teams for fantasy sports players - my algorithm finds the best 75 teams from trillions of possibilities, typically in less than a second.

The problem is a variant of the knapsack problem.  My solution uses N-2D trees and combinatorics to find the best teams.  It is implemented in Python and uses the Cython, numpy and scipy libraries, and interfaces with the webserver using jsons. The algorithm runs in parallel on up to 12 cores.

The work has been extended to more sports and to include more features.

Data Analyst, Algorithm Developer

I’m a software and data engineer with a PhD in Physics from Imperial College. I’ve designed and helped implement a range of software projects, 2 directly driving revenue. I enjoy working in friendly teams that write high quality code (techniques like TDD, CI/CD and YAGNI where appropriate), building solutions for user problems.

Most recently I improved a data platform for investment data at T Rowe Price, allowing analysts to get rapid data updates. I built batch processing pipelines for Wayhome, automatically selecting properties for shared ownership. I designed and helped implement pipelines for Speechmatics, automatically training speech-to-text transcription models. For LineupLab, I built an algorithm that helps sports gamblers.

I’ve also designed, built and deployed scalable services using Flask and Docker on Google Cloud Platform, exposing APIs for Machine Learning models, databases, algorithms and other business logic. I’ve been central to introducing code review, automated testing and continuous integration.

I’ve mainly worked in Python so far, I’ve used a range of libraries including Apache Airflow, Flask, SQLAlchemy, Celery, pytest, invoke, numpy, scipy, matplotlib and Luigi. I’m proficient in a number of other technologies, including Docker, Google Cloud Platform, PostgreSQL, Redis and RabbitMQ.
