𝗠𝘆 𝗯𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝘆 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗿.
Her reason? "She's too quiet. Where's the energy?"

I was shocked.

This came from a very senior woman executive at the bank. 
Someone I respected. An extrovert who thrived in the spotlight.

But here's what she didn't see:

My best direct report - 
She got her work done—consistently and well.
She voiced her opinions, just not in the loud, dominating way that my boss expected.
She was a great listener who actually thought before speaking.
She shared new ideas with the team, just not in every single meeting.
She was willing to lead, she just needed the right support and coaching.
She wasn't a non-performer. She was just wired differently.

And she wasn't alone. 
This happened twice in my career—two of my quietest team members labeled as "lacking energy" by senior leaders who couldn't see past their own style.

For one of them, I had to fight hard just to clear her probation.

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗯𝗶𝗮𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

Leaders who only value people who look, sound, and act like them.
As senior leaders, this is unacceptable.
A good team isn't a room full of the same personality types competing to be heard.
A great team has diversity—different strengths, different communication styles, different ways of showing up.

And a great leader? They bring out the best in everyone, however they're wired.

Both of those "quiet" team members went on to become top performers. 
One even stepped into a leadership role.

All they needed was someone who saw their value instead of trying to change who they were.

The 2025 Play 14 was incredible!

This two-day unconference brings together facilitators (called "Play Makers") who pitch their games and activities at different stations. Players simply show up and join in.

This year, I took a leap and pitched my own activity—helping people find their voice to manage stakeholders and drive business results.

   Shared laughter and light moments connect teams faster than any team-building PowerPoint.

   People are more open to learning and course-correcting when the stakes feel lower.

   Practicing failure in play teaches leaders and teams to bounce back faster in real work.
   
7. 𝗜𝘁 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝘀 𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗵𝗶𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵𝘆 
   Play levels the field, making it easier for junior voices to speak up and be heard.
   
8. 𝗜𝘁 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 – In a world of back-to-back meetings, play reminds us we're working with people, not just roles.
   
My favorite moment? 

The silent retrospective on the final day. 
We walked quietly around the sprawling NLB level 16 Pod, reflecting and appreciating each other without words.

We started with high-octane learning and ended in thoughtful silence. It was perfect.

Play 14 Singapore just keeps getting better.

These words from Cecilia, our keynote speaker for our latest PHOENIXUS #CXO Innovation Lab, captured the essence of this series of workshops.

Over three months, we brought together senior women leaders to solve real business problems using the Codevelopment Action Learning framework. Each session, a "client" presented a challenge. The group asked questions, refined the problem, brainstormed solutions, and created action plans.

Amazon is cutting jobs to "reduce bureaucracy and remove layers" of management.

This is what the new world of work is looking like.

The organizational model of the future looks like this: fewer layers, more autonomy, distributed decision-making. It's called "Teal" in management theory. 

Haier, the Chinese giant, actually did it—split 70,000 people into 4,000 self-managing teams with real ownership and profit-sharing. 

It works.

Today, Haier (a Chinese company) is the world's #1 home appliance maker with $40 billion in revenue and a $30 billion market cap, proving that their radical self-managing team structure actually scales.

AI is now the catalyst and accelerating this change.
• You'll need to prove your value constantly, not annually
• Job security is dead; skill security is everything
  
So what does it mean if you still have a job?

1️⃣ 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲 
Don't just do good work—make sure people outside your team see it.

One employer can't be your whole identity or income. 
Side projects and consulting prove your value exists beyond one company's opinion.

Stay visible and keep conversations warm. 
The "I only reach out when I need something" approach is dead.

You need to figure out what needs doing without being told.

No coding required.

Sam Altman once predicted: "$1 billion companies with zero full-time employees are coming soon."

That future just got a lot closer.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗠𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗢𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀:

→ The cost of building has collapsed. 
→ They can finally do more with way less. 
→ Headcount is no longer a proxy for capability.
→ A five-person team can now ship what used to take 50 people. 

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗠𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗬𝗼𝘂:
→ Here's the uncomfortable truth: 𝘄𝗲'𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗲𝗲 𝗮 𝘁𝘀𝘂𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗶 𝗼𝗳 𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗼𝗳𝗳𝘀.
→ When you can automate 70% of what a team does, you don't need the same team size.

𝗕𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻 "𝗔𝗜 𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗿" 𝘄𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝘀𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗷𝗼𝗯. 
Using ChatGPT to write emails? 
That's table stakes now. 
If AI makes you 3x faster, your company only needs one-third of the people doing that job.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘆 𝗥𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗻𝘁:

1️⃣ 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗷𝗼𝗯. 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲. 
 → This is the big mindset shift. 
→  Don't ask "Who will hire me?" 
→  Ask "What value can I create?" 
→  Jobs are positions that get automated. 
→  Value is what people pay for.

2️⃣ 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱, 𝗱𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝘂𝘀𝗲. 
→ Can you architect a system of agents that solves a real business problem? 
→  the skill gap that matters.

3️⃣ 𝗚𝗼 𝗱𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗼𝗻 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻:
→  Complex negotiations. 
→ Building relationships. 
→ Making judgment calls with incomplete information. 
→ These aren't safe forever, but they're safe longer.

4️⃣ 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗯𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀. 
→ If you have deep expertise in healthcare AND understand AI systems, you're valuable. 
→ The intersection is where you win.

5️⃣ 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗲𝘅𝗲𝗰𝘂𝘁𝗲. 
→ The future job isn't "do the task." 
→ It's "design the system that does the task."

Like what I have always said in my keynote, 
"AI will not replace human. Human with AI will replace humans without AI" is a myth.

In the new world of work, humans who create value with AI will replace humans who use AI.
