Robert Harris

I’m a Senior Backend Software Engineer with 15+ years of experience designing, building, and operating production backend systems across a range of industries.

My work has primarily focused on backend architecture, API development, and data systems, including long-lived monoliths, service-oriented architectures, and cloud-native microservices. I’ve spent much of my career working in PHP-based environments, while also building and maintaining services in Python and Go, and I’m comfortable picking up new technologies as systems evolve.

I’ve worked extensively with relational and distributed data stores (MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQL Server, Spanner), and I care deeply about data correctness, performance, and reliability in production. I enjoy untangling legacy systems, improving database designs, optimizing queries, and introducing pragmatic architectural improvements that balance short-term delivery with long-term maintainability.

Beyond code, I’ve taken on senior-level ownership responsibilities: mentoring engineers, reviewing designs and pull requests, collaborating closely with product managers and QA, and supporting production releases and incident resolution. I value clear communication, thoughtful tradeoffs, and building systems that teams can confidently operate.

I’m always learning and adapting, whether that’s deepening my cloud experience in AWS and GCP, expanding my work with distributed services, or exploring new tools as they become relevant. I’m most excited by backend roles where I can own meaningful systems, contribute to architectural decisions, and help teams build reliable software at scale.
