Mom knew something the doctors didn’t.

At 7, I couldn’t sit still.
Teachers complained.
The school counselor said I need help.
The doc said medication.

Mom said no.

Not because Jan was anti-medicine,
but because she saw what they missed.

My hyperactivity wasn’t a bug.
It was a feature.

An untrained super power...

While other kids got Ritalin,
I got early-morning workouts with Coach Lamont Carr.

5:30 a.m. alarms.
Shuttle runs before sunrise.

Chess when my body was tired but my mind wasn’t.

Mom understood something powerful:

You teach them to handle the curves.

She gave me structure, not sedation.
Discipline, not diagnosis.
Outlets, not limits.

Two decades later, that “problem child” energy built:

Two things saved us:

1. Boundaries that protect the marriage first. No business talk after dinner. The kids get us fully present. Work stays in the office, even when the office is 10 feet from the kitchen.

2. Empathy before efficiency. Every time. Without exception.

The people who say “never work with your spouse” are protecting themselves from hard conversations.

Hard conversations are where the growth is.

Ashley believed in me when this was a napkin idea. She’s still my first call when something breaks. 
And my first celebration when something lands.

The best business partner I ever found was already next to me all this time.

I’ve made almost every mistake on this list. That's how we learn.

Here’s what 10 years of doing it wrong taught me about doing it right.

10 uncomfortable truths about Leadership (that you can read in 30 seconds):

1. Leadership is not about talking. It’s about being the best listener in the room.
2. A "performance problem" is often just a "leadership and systems problem."
3. Leadership isn't a rank. It’s a daily choice to look after the person to your left and the person to your right.
4. Your “Top Performer” is toxic if they destroy the culture to hit their goals. Let them go.
5. Empathy is not soft. It’s the only way people feel safe enough to tell you the truth.
6. Micromanagement is a confession of fear. If you don’t trust them, you shouldn’t have put them in the role.
7. The best feedback doesn’t feel like an attack; it feels like an invitation to grow.
8. Radical transparency is a competitive advantage. If a decision isn’t in someone’s best interest, say so and explain why.
9. Results hide a lot of sins. Don’t mistake short-term wins for healthy long-term leadership.
10. You don’t build great companies. You build great people, and they build great companies.

The hardest truths on this list are the ones that force us to look in the mirror.

I’m leaning toward # 4 today. Letting a toxic high performer go is the decision that separates leaders who talk about culture from leaders who protect it.

Most LinkedIn profiles explain the past.
The best ones make people want to talk to you now.

The person isn't the problem.
The profile is.

Most people are still using LinkedIn like it's 2017.

A list of roles.
A digital resume.
A bunch of vague buzzwords.
A headline nobody remembers.
A banner that says a lot but nothing at all.

But your LinkedIn profile is not a job history.

It's a landing page.

When the right buyer lands on your profile, they should understand 3 things fast:

1. Who you help
2. What problem you solve
3. Why they should trust you

Your banner? A billboard.
Your headline? Your positioning.

You don’t need “better prompts.”
You need a playbook that turns AI into an actual coworker.

Most install AI like a shiny new app.

The ones who win install it like a teammate with a job description and SOP.

I got tired of asking:
“Can AI help with this?”

Now I ask one question every week:
“Which 5–10 recurring tasks can I train AI to fully own?”

That’s when it started saving me close to 100 minutes a day.

Here’s the 8‑step workflow I use to make AI a real GTM coworker instead of a toy:

STEP 1 - Set master context & define daily focus
Create a living “brain” doc with your mission, offers, tone, examples, and target audience.

Every task your AI touches should pull from this so you’re not re‑explaining who you are 20 times a week.

STEP 2 - Dump raw thoughts, let AI synthesize
Instead of staring at a blank page, brain‑dump messy bullets or voice notes.

Ask AI to synthesize the chaos, clarify the objective, and propose a direction.

STEP 3 - Write a cowork brief, not a prompt (this is a key step!)
“I need help with [task]. Current flow is [what I do now]. The goal is [specific outcome]. Use [references]. Follow [rules].”

You’re giving it a mini brief, not a wish.

STEP 4 - Provide reference assets
Feed it 3–5 examples, templates, and style guides that look like “done.”

You’re not asking it to be original - you’re asking it to pattern‑match you.

STEP 5 - Let AI draft, critique, and iterate
First pass: AI drafts the thing.

Second pass: have it poke holes, find logic gaps, and suggest sharper alternatives. It’s both writer and editor.

STEP 6 - Review & refine the work product
Your job shifts to quality control: accuracy, tone, and strategic fit.

Add your lived experience and make final edits.

STEP 7 - Offload execution & integration
When a flow works, bake it into your stack: docs, email, CRM updates, social posts, Zapier automations.

Stop copy‑pasting; start wiring systems.

STEP 8 - Reclaim time and move upstack
Use the saved 100 minutes for strategy, deals, and leadership.

Then repeat the process with the next batch of tasks.

TAKEAWAY: AI only feels like magic when you treat it like a coworker with SOPs, not a toy you occasionally ask for ideas.

14. Signal beats volume. Every time.
15. Content builds proximity. Proximity builds trust. Trust builds pipeline.
16. I build rooms, not an audience.
17. The world doesn't need more people who sit still. It needs people who can't. It's go time. 
18. You cannot scale the machine while breaking the operator.
19. Long-term games with long-term people. That's the only strategy AI cannot automate.
20. Build the life first. Then build the business that protects it.

Every year I pick one thing with a 50% chance of failure.

On purpose.

The Japanese call it MISOGI - a voluntary challenge so hard it might break you.

Not a goal. Not a resolution.  
A crucible.

A sampling of my list so far:

The TEDx was the hardest.

Not because of the stage.  
Because of the audience.

Friends. Family. People who’ve known me my whole life.

No slides to hide behind.  
No deck I’d rehearsed 167 times.  
Just me, and an idea I built from nothing.

Work presentations have armor.  
You’re the expert. You’ve got the numbers. The slides carry you.

This was different.

Standing in front of the people whose opinions cut deepest - with nothing but your own words - that’s exposure most people avoid their entire lives.

Which is exactly why I did it.

Misogi isn’t about the trophy.  
It’s about who you become when you systematically choose discomfort.
On purpose.

Every hard thing I’ve done on purpose has taught me the same lesson:
Growth doesn’t come from dodging what scares you.  
It comes from walking straight toward it - deliberately, repeatedly.

The marathon taught me I can outlast my excuses.  
The guitar taught me to be patient with being bad.  
The handstands taught me to trust the process.  
The TEDx taught me vulnerability is a skill you train.

Most people wait for hard things to find them.

The ones who grow fastest?  
They go looking.

There’s a reason loneliness is called an epidemic now.

But most people misunderstand where it lives.

It’s not the big moments - the wins, the losses, the milestones.

Loneliness lives in the small stuff.

Coordinating carpool - alone.
Figuring out taxes - alone.
Calling the plumber at 9pm when the main line breaks - alone.
Carrying the mental load that never really shuts off - alone.

That’s where it compounds.

Not in the absence of celebration.

In the absence of a partner for the 90% of life nobody sees.

Ashley and I didn’t just build a marriage.

We built a partnership.

Business.
Family.
Friendship.
Experiences.

But also the invisible parts.

Someone who:
→ Sees your potential before the proof exists
→ Calls you out mid-sentence when you’re spiraling
→ Shows up on the hard days without being asked
→ Celebrates quietly when things finally work

The right partner doesn’t complete you.

They compound you.

I'm subscribed to Claude, Gemini, ChatGPT, and Perplexity.
I use all of them.

Daily.

But the companies actually scaling revenue right now are not debating which chatbot is smartest.

They're focused on two numbers:

1. CAC = What does it cost to get a customer?

2. LTV = What are they worth over time?

Everything else is noise.


Here's where AI actually matters:

1. Lowering CAC

Old outbound was spray and pray.
Now that just gets you ignored.

The new move is precision.
AI can read a prospect's LinkedIn, earnings call, hiring patterns, website changes, and recent news in seconds.

Then it helps you send something that is actually relevant.

Not:
"Just checking in."

Not:
"Bumping this to the top of your inbox."

Something like:
"I saw you launched X after expanding into Y. We've seen teams in that exact transition struggle with Z. Here's the pattern we're seeing."

That's not spam.
That's context at scale.


2. Protecting LTV

Most companies do not lose customers all at once.

They lose them slowly.
Usage drops.
Tickets change tone.
Response times get longer.
Momentum fades (half-life of enthusiasm). 

By the time the cancellation email shows up, the real churn happened weeks earlier.

AI is useful here because it never stops watching.

24/7/365

It sees the pattern early.
It flags the risk.
It drafts the recovery motion.
It helps the team intervene before the account is gone.

And when a customer is winning?

It can spot that too.

That's when expansion gets easier.

The BIG shift

Most of the work above used to take a human 62 minutes.
Now it takes seconds.

That does not make humans less valuable.

It makes wasted human effort less necessary.

The goal is not to replace people.

The goal is to remove the low-leverage work so your team can spend more time doing what still wins:

Building trust.
Having better conversations.
Creating better outcomes.

Use AI for the data.

Save your people for the relationship.

That's the real play.

I get this call every day. "What AI tool should I use?"
Wrong question.

The right question is: what job needs to get done?

Every AI tool has a lane where it dominates. 
And a lane where it has no business being.

A workstream if you will. Not a Job but a Job To Be Done.

When you force one tool to do everything, you get "handled."

Handled doesn't scale a business. Exceptional does.

I mapped 18 business tasks across 5 major platforms.

The results weren't close.

Research has a winner. Writing has a different one. Data analysis, another. Strategy, another.

When I matched the right tool to the right job:
Output doubled. Turnaround time dropped. Quality went up across every category. Revenue followed.

No new hires. No new budget.

Just a stack built around jobs to be done (JTBD).

That's the shift most leaders miss.
They debate the tool. The best operators define the job first.

Last week I walked into a room with two co-CEOs, a CIO, and a CFO.
I knew way more about their internal tensions than they expected.

AI pulled it in five minutes.

Two years of emails. Meeting transcripts. Calendar data. Synthesized into a strategic brief on every person in that room.

Their dynamics. Their pain. Their 2026 targets.

That used to take half a week. Most of the time it didn't happen at all.

Eric Schmidt put it plainly the other day: 
"We are living through the moment that will be in the history books for thousands of years; the moment when a non-human intelligence arrives, and it is a competitor to us."

That's not hype. That's orientation.
And an invitation. 

The advantage will go to those who:

I was backstage with Daniel Pink a few years ago.

He was about to speak on the 3 pillars of motivation: 
Autonomy, Mastery, and Purpose.

As I watched him present, I had a thought that became the springboard for my next chapter - I had spent my entire career chasing Mastery and Purpose.

But I was failing miserably at Autonomy.

I had the "success" I thought I wanted. Mastery and Purpose were at an all time high.
But I didn't have my Tuesdays.

I've seen too many professionals in their 30s, 40s, and 50s sold a version of "making it" that's actually a golden cage. 
Handcuffs. 
Nice ones, but still..

We confuse visibility with value.
And busyness with importance.

But a packed calendar is not power.
It's proof you're still the bottleneck.

That conversation changed how I think about growth.

Now I don't look at revenue as just a number on a balance sheet.
I look at it as 'liquidity' for my life.

How fluid and adaptable can you be?

You build pipeline not just to "be rich," but to buy back your time.
You scale a business not to be "The Boss," but so it can eventually run without your exhaustion.

The goal is not more status.
The goal is more space.

Space to think.
Space to move your body before the day owns you.
Space to be fully present with your family without checking Slack every 3 minutes.

For me, real success is being trusted, calm, and well-paid.

Money is the tool.
Autonomy is the goal.

Stop trading space for status.

Tools don't build pipeline. AI workflows do. 

Tuesday I was spiraling.

Revenue was up.
Pipeline full.

And I still felt like I was drowning.

Ashley looked at me across the kitchen counter and said five words:

"Your body is keeping score."

She was right. I needed that. 

My mind was running a marathon while my nervous system was stuck in survival mode.

We live in a culture obsessed with life-hacking our way out of stress:
New planners.
Productivity apps.
Time-blocked calendars.

But you can't trick your biology.

Confidence isn't a feeling.
It's closer to a confidence interval.

In statistics, a confidence interval answers one question:

How sure are you that what you predict will actually happen?

Confidence works the same way.

You don't build it with affirmations.
You build it with evidence.

Reps.
Follow-through.
Promises kept to yourself.

Stack enough proof and something interesting happens:

Your internal probability shifts.

Eventually the evidence gets so strong it drowns out the doubt.
And the noise.

Three non-negotiables that help me regulate the system and build that proof:

1. Recover hard.
Sleep. Mobility. Quiet. Recovery isn't a reward - it's biological fuel for tomorrow. Jan taught me this early.

2. Earn your meal and your shower.
Move your body every day. Stress has to leave physically. I watched my daughter sprint through the finish line at camp when she was in 4th place with 50 yards to go. She didn't coast. She ran harder. Your body needs to complete the loop.

3. Go to your people.
Family. Friends. Community.
Ashley, my kids, my inner circle - they're not a nice-to-have. They're infrastructure. Connective tissue regulates the nervous system better than any app ever will.

Stop trying to plan your way out of exhaustion.
Stop trying to affirm your way out of doubt.

Regulate the body.
Do the work.
Build the pile of proof that you are who you say you are.

My dad and I loved Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm.

So standing in the airport shortly after he passed away, holding my newborn and spotting Larry David sitting alone...

I knew I had to say something.

A wave of nostalgia hit hard. In that moment of intense grief, it felt fitting to walk up and share what his work meant to us.

I shared a brief story about my dad and asked for a photo. Not to post. Just to keep for myself.

His response was pure, unfiltered Larry David.

"I have a no selfie policy," he said. "If I take one, a hundred people will form a line."

Then came the twist.

He leaned in: 
“Actually, you can do me a favor. If you can just stand here and talk to me with that cute kid for the next 20 minutes until we board... that'll probably save me a lot of flack."

So I became Larry David's human buffer zone.

For the next 20 minutes, we debated the intricate politics of doing the dishes in a post-COVID world. He launched into a highly personalized bit about what constitutes a "finished" job.

Is it in the drying rack? hand-dried? Put in the dishwasher? 

He was particularly distressed over whether leaving a pan to "soak" in the sink actually counts as cleaning up or if it's just a coward's way out. He was referring to his roommate.

It was surreal.

When you're grieving, the world can feel incredibly heavy.

But that absurd, 20-minute conversation about soap and drying racks was exactly what I needed.

Even in our darkest times, life throws us lifelines of absolute absurdity.

Our loved ones live on in the stories we tell.

Sometimes, the best way to honor them is to share a piece of their joy with the world - even if the person listening is just using you as a human shield at Gate B12.
