Do other older millennials feel slightly bitter about spending years learning Excel and SQL only for it to be completely outdated now?

I started my career in consulting, and my whole job was Excel and PowerPoint. At Google, my job for 2 years was writing SQL queries and Sheets models. I prided myself on building entire models without touching my mouse.

The other day, I uploaded a raw data export from our ad performance into Claude with a monthly report template. Within 30 minutes of prompting, I had a fully formatted report ready to present. This would normally take me a full day.

Meanwhile, a 24-year-old on my team who has never touched Excel built a model with Claude that would have taken me 1-2 hours.

I don't want to sound like a grandma complaining "Back in my day I made all my Excel models from scratch!" I'm not actually mad that the younger generation gets to skip the grunt work. They can spend that time on higher value work instead; and if grunt work goes away, the bar for quality should go way higher.

That said, I'm not afraid of becoming "outdated." All those years building models and slide decks trained me to understand the nuance behind logic, storytelling, and good taste. This intuition took years to build, and it doesn't go away. 

The skills that got you hired in 2016 will get automated. It is inevitable. But your judgment and taste will serve you in 2026. Lean into it. Keep a very high bar for quality. Coach your colleagues so they can uplevel their work. 

For now, I still have one edge: AI slide decks are not up to par (and yes I've tried Gamma, Gemini, and Claude). But I know that won't last forever.
