I'll be honest, I never planned to become the guy marketing teams call when they need websites that actually work.

I started as a car-obsessed engineer in Dehradun, a small Indian town known for its lush greenery and British architecture. Studied automobile engineering because I thought I'd design the next great supercar. 

Plot twist: I ended up designing and building websites instead. Mostly to fund my car addiction, if I'm being completely transparent.

But here's what hooked me, I kept seeing brilliant marketing teams stuck with websites that looked pretty but converted like garbage, or worse, sites they couldn't even update without submitting a developer ticket.

So I went deep on the whole stack. Not just Webflow development, but strategy, UX/UI design, brand architecture, the works. Because what's the point of building something fast if the foundation is broken?

When I started Digi Hotshot in 2019, the car in our family was a Maruti Alto K10.

If you're not from India, let me tell you, that was one of the cheapest car you could buy. About $3,600. We got it in 2013.

That's the car I drove while building websites for $40 to $100.

In 2021, I bought my first car with business money. Volkswagen Taigun GT TSI. 

Cars are the reason I got into this. Not the money itself, the freedom to buy what I actually cared about. That car was proof the bet worked.

June 2024. Mercedes GLC. About $96,000.

I know how these posts come across. I almost didn't write this. But here's what I actually want to say.

It's not the car. It's the trajectory. From $40 hotel websites to working with companies that have raised $50M+. From the cheapest car in India to not the cheapest car in India.

No connections. No CS degree. Automobile engineering degree, YouTube tutorials, and a willingness to figure things out as I went.

If you're early in your journey and it feels painfully slow, it is slow. That's not a sign it's broken. That's what the beginning looks like.

The Alto K10 was the beginning and honestly, I'm glad I started there.

There's a specific kind of anxiety that only WordPress site owners understand.

It's 9am. You log into the dashboard. 14 plugin updates pending. You hover over “Update All" and think what if this breaks something?

So you don't click it

You tell yourself you'll do it Friday. Friday becomes next week. Next week becomes next month. Now you're 6 months behind on security patches and your hosting company sends you a passive-aggressive email about vulnerabilities.

I've talked to marketing leaders at funded companies, companies with $20M, $40M, $60M raised who are genuinely scared of their own website backend.

Not because they're not technical. Because they've been burned before. They clicked update once and the contact form broke. Or the homepage went blank or the checkout stopped working on mobile.

So now nobody touches it. The site slowly becomes a museum of 2022 design choices and outdated messaging, maintained by a freelancer who may or may not respond to emails.

The craziest part is, the plugin that's causing the most anxiety is usually providing something that should've been built into the platform to begin with.

We've migrated 30+ companies from WordPress, HubSpot, Joomla, Squarespace, and custom-built sites to Webflow.

Here's what nobody tells you before a platform migration:

1. SEO migration is the hardest part, not the build.

The new site can be gorgeous. But if you lose your rankings, you lost the thing that was actually working. 301 redirects, URL structure, meta data, sitemap — all of this has to be mapped before a single page is designed.

2. Your content will need to be rewritten.

Not because it's bad. Because it was written for a different site structure. Different page layouts need different content blocks. If you just copy-paste old content into new templates, it'll feel off.

3. The timeline is longer than you think.

Everyone thinks migration = rebuild. It's rebuild + content migration + SEO mapping + redirect testing + training + QA. Budget 6-10 weeks minimum for a serious B2B site.

4. You'll find skeletons.

Orphan pages nobody knew existed. Duplicate content. Blog posts from 2019 still getting traffic. These all need decisions, not just migration.

5. Training isn't optional.

Your team needs to actually know how to use the new system. Otherwise you just moved from one platform you can't manage to another.

A company raises $30M, hires a VP of Marketing, buys HubSpot, sets up Salesforce, invests in Gong, and builds out a sales team.

Then sends all that pipeline to a website that was built when they had 3 employees and no brand guidelines.

I see this constantly. The go-to-market engine is 2025 but the website is still 2021.

And nobody notices because everyone's focused on the next thing — new product feature, new campaign, new hire. The website just sits there collecting dust and collecting first impressions from every prospect, investor, and potential hire who visits.

Here's what makes it tricky. The site isn't broken. It loads, the contact form works, the blog exists. But it doesn't match who they are now. The positioning shifted, the ICP changed, the product does things it didn't do two years ago, and the site still tells the old story.

The gap between who you are and what your site says you are grows quietly. You don't notice until a prospect says "I almost didn't take the call because your site didn't look like you could handle our scale."

That's the moment. And most companies don't hear it because the prospect just doesn't take the call.

After 6 years running a Webflow agency and talking to marketing leaders who've hired 2, 3, sometimes 4 agencies before us, here are the red flags they wish they'd caught earlier:

1. The proposal focuses on deliverables, not outcomes.

"10 pages, 5 blog templates, 1 CMS collection" tells you what you're getting. It doesn't tell you why it matters or how it connects to your pipeline.

2. They can't show you a client who runs their site independently.

If every client still needs the agency for updates, the build creates dependency. That's by design. And it's expensive long-term.

3. The timeline has no detail before the design phase.

If there's no discovery, no content strategy, no conversion mapping before pixels start moving, you're building a house without a blueprint.

4. They don't ask about your team's workflow.

A site built for a marketing team of 2 is different from a team of 8. If they didn't ask how your team works, the site won't fit how your team works.

5. They compare themselves to other agencies instead of talking about your problem.

The conversation should be about you, not about them.

None of these are obvious in a first call. They show up 6 weeks into the project or 6 months after launch.

But they're all visible in the proposal stage if you know what to look for.

"Build it right. Build it to last. Build it so someone else can run it when you're done."

That's the line I keep coming back to and it didn't come from a business book. It came from studying automobile engineering.

In engineering school you learn that a good design isn't the one that works perfectly in the lab. It's the one that works when a mechanic in a small town needs to fix it with the tools they have. Accessibility of maintenance, that's the principle.

When I started building websites I didn't realize I was applying the same thinking, but I was. Every component library I build, I ask whether their marketing coordinator can add a new section without me. Every CMS structure, I ask whether this will still make sense when the person who built it isn't in the room.

Most agencies optimize for the launch, the screenshot, the Dribbble shot. And those things matter.

But the real test is 18 months later when the marketing team has turned over, when the person who managed the project is gone, and when nobody remembers why that CMS field exists. Does it still work?

That's the engineering question and it applies to everything I build.

I think the best work disappears into the background. You don't notice good architecture, you notice when it's missing, when something breaks, when you can't find the thing you need.

The goal is invisible infrastructure. Systems so well-built that the people using them never think about the people who built them. That's the job.

Talked to a CEO last month, just closed their Series B. First thing he said: 'our website still looks like we're a seed-stage company'

This is so common it's almost a rule — the 90 days after a raise are when everyone suddenly notices the website. Investors are watching, competitors know you raised, prospects are checking you out

And the site still tells last year's story

Here's what I'd tell anyone in this position: don't treat it as a 4-month redesign project, that's an eternity post-raise

Ship a strong V1 in 4-6 weeks, not perfect but credible and fast. Then iterate

And whatever you do, don't let the migration kill your SEO. I've seen companies tank their organic traffic because nobody mapped the URLs properly during the relaunch and that's months of recovery

The companies that nail this separate 'launch' from 'perfect,' the ones that struggle try to do everything at once

After 6 years building websites for VC-backed marketing teams, the most expensive sentence I hear on discovery calls:

'Our dev team will get to it after the product launch’

I ask when the product launch is. Usually 6-8 weeks out

So I ask what's been waiting for that moment

Three landing pages, a pricing update, a new case study section, a campaign they've been ready to run for two months. 

All tied to the same queue, shared with product engineers who have their own priorities.

Marketing doesn't have a bad team

The teams I work with who ship fastest aren't the ones with the best developers

They're the ones who stopped depending on developers for marketing work

Two different problems, two different fixes.

We shipped a 25 page website in 7 days - homepage, pricing page with interactive calculator, 8 product pages, blog, and demo booking page. 25 pages total.

The client is a major enterprise brand backed by major ecommerce ecosystem players and top-tier VCs, powers thousands of brands and has tracked over $10B in online sales. Webflow Enterprise

They didn't come to us for a slow, careful, 12-week process. They came because they needed it live now.

So we built it. Coordinated with their creative agency, SEM agency, and SEO agency simultaneously, processed 100+ QA items, and when the client accidentally published mid-build we reverted without data loss and kept going.

Seven days, 25 pages, live.

I'm not sharing this to say speed is always the goal because it's not. Most projects need 4-8 weeks and that's the right timeline.

But when speed is the requirement, the only way to deliver is with a team that's done it enough times to not panic. We've built 50+ Webflow sites so the process is tight, the components are ready, and the QA system works.

When the brief says "we need this yesterday" 

we don't say "that's not possible" 

We say "here's what we need from you to make it happen”

I studied automobile engineering in college. Didn't end up building cars. 

But I kept the habit of looking at how technical products are presented to the world.

And here's what I've noticed lately.

Some of the most well-funded, genuinely impressive technology companies, semiconductors, robotics, quantum computing, climate tech, have websites that look like they were built in a weekend.

Because they were.

The founder built it. Or an intern did. Or someone's cousin who "knows Squarespace."

And it made sense at the time. When you're pre-revenue and deep in R&D, a website isn't the priority. Fair.

But then they raise a Series A. Then a Series B. Suddenly they're selling to enterprise buyers. Showing up at conferences. Investors are sending prospects their way.

And the website still says "We're building the future of [category]" with a stock photo of a circuit board.

The disconnect between the sophistication of the technology and the quality of its online presence is wild. These companies can design chips that run AI workloads. But the site explaining what they do looks like a college project.

I think that gap is going to close fast. The companies that figure it out first will look a lot more credible than they are. And the ones that don't will look a lot less credible than they deserve.

We've worked with dozens of marketing teams at Series A through Series C companies. 

And one of the most common things I hear on discovery calls is some version of: "We spent $80K on a redesign last year and our conversion rate didn't move."

Sometimes it's $60K. Sometimes it's $120K. The number changes but the story doesn't.

The site looks incredible. Animations are smooth. The design team did great work. Everyone internally loves it. But leads didn't go up. Pipeline didn't change. And now the CMO has to justify the spend to the board.

In almost every case, the problem isn't the design itself. It's that the project was scoped as a design project when it should've been scoped as a conversion project. Beautiful and effective are two different briefs.

A homepage can win design awards and still lose prospects because the messaging hierarchy is wrong, the CTA placement doesn't match scroll behavior, or the page loads too slow on mobile where 60% of traffic comes from.

I mean, the most expensive website mistake isn't a bad design. It's a good design built without a conversion strategy. And most teams don't realize that until the board asks about ROI.
