🤖👨‍💻Coding with AI? The Oldest Metric Still Winning.

There’s a metric used in software engineering for decades: the more lines of code you have, the more bugs you’ll inevitably end up with.

It’s unfashionable, definitely not AI-friendly but still painfully accurate.

Today, AI lets us generate 10×, 50×, 100× more code than before. That feels like leverage until you remember that every line is:

- A liability
- A surface area to secure
- A future maintenance cost

As of today AI lowered the cost of creating complexity.

The risk isn’t that AI writes bad code but that it writes too much acceptable code, faster than humans can meaningfully understand, review, or own.

If your process rewards speed over clarity, output over comprehension and volume over intent then AI will happily amplify all of it.

The real skill shift in 2026 is code restraint:

- Saying no to generated abstractions
- Deleting more than you keep
- Forcing designs to get simpler, not bigger

LOC was never about counting lines but about respecting complexity.

That lesson didn’t age out, we just stopped wanting to hear it.

As a freelance contractor, I had to perform a security audit on the web servers (bsd / apache) and applications (php / mysql / mssql).

After the audit, I had to update and fix their main php application. These developments involve :
 - mssql stored procedures calls
 - sql injections fix
 - automated code deployment through capistrano
 - code optimization using latest php5 functions
 - mailing list functionalities with customizable templates

A complete website and its webservices was developed from scratch in php5. I had to develop a tiny mvc framework with models connected to a mssql server through stored procedures.

I also trained system administrators for xen virtualization and managed migration : all the physical web servers were replaced by redundant and virtual analogs. Various developer tools were also installed : subversion, bug tracking (redmine), ...

To handle a small event organized by ITG, I had to develop a small ruby on rails website which was this time connected to a mysql database.
