Chartered Institute of Linguists

The Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIOL) is the UK's Royal Charter body for language practitioners. We aim to enhance the recognition and promote the value of languages and language skills in the public interest. Founded in 1910, CIOL has over 7,000 members worldwide.

CIOL's purpose is:

To contribute towards international goodwill by encouraging the effective study and practice of languages, promote the exchange and dissemination of information on matters of interest to linguists and persons interested in the study of languages and to provide means of recognising persons who are qualified as linguists in the professions, the arts, the sciences, industry, trade and commerce.

CIOL is served by honorary officers and is governed by an elected Council, which meets five times a year.

Council is made up of a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 15 elected members. Its primary role is to define CIOL's strategic objectives and monitor their implementation. Council reports formally to members at the AGM in March.

The honorary officers of CIOL are the President and Vice-Presidents.

Certain responsibilities – for example, membership applications, implementation of CIOL's disciplinary procedures, The Linguist journal and Chartered Linguist admissions – are delegated to committees of Council.

Council Member

My role as a Committee Member is to support the Division with all its duties and responsibilities. The Division works closely with CIOL's membership team and its other professional divisions in supporting CIOL's strategic aims. The Committee meetings are held to agree the events' programme and propose speakers and presenters. In addition, the Committee surveys members to ensure that activities and support continue to meet members’ development needs. The Committee reviews feedback and makes suggestions for improving future events. Furthermore, TD responds to member queries, ensures the TD webpage is up-to-date, acts as moderator for the TransNet forum, acts as a source of specialist advice to support the CIOL's membership team, senior management team and Council, and provides good practice guidance as and when required, and has a social media presence.

Translating Division - Steering Group Member

As above, my role as a Committee Member is to support the Division with all its duties and responsibilities. The BPG Division supports all language professionals working in any industry, commerce, government, and education environments, irrespective of how they use their languages skills. Committee meetings cover discussions from CIOL's policy and terms of office to reviews of past events and ideas for future events, organising webinars and members' training and remaining close to language policy developments in the UK. The division aims to promote CIOL and the value of languages in business, industry, commerce, education and society at all times. In addition to the above-mentioned duties, my role is also to promote the division on Twitter by managing the division's profile.

During Language Specific Seminars (LSP), I help students working into Greek to demonstrate the necessary skills to translate texts according to professional standards and differentiate general language for language for special purposes. 

To use techniques for text analysis and identify issues and develop strategies for solving them. 

To critically reflect on the translation process and produce translations according to guidelines. 

I assign student work, and return feedback on a variety of texts. The aim is to prepare students for real-life business scenarios with very tight deadlines.

The module also involves administering exams, assessing performance and guiding students throughout the academic year to build a progress portfolio ready for submission at the end of the year.

My role as an Associate Lecturer involves a student-focused teaching approach. Greek Localisation Lead - Prime Video, Alexa

During my 4 years at OPP, I've helped the organisation expand their presence in the European market by embedding a robust in-house translation process leveraging translation technologies. I managed several different projects, running in parallel, delivering translated paper and electronic products such as booklets and eBooks into various European languages, as well as the production of source materials and content in English for UK and Ireland. Furthermore, I oversaw projects delivering the authoring and production of online and classroom training workshops in both English and other European languages. 

In addition, I have been working closely with the Marketing team for the purposes of localising the company website into 8 different locales, maintaining the production of multilingual content, including news stories, blog posts, new product descriptions and legal notices into all the different site languages. 

I have, furthermore, taken part in the company's digital transformation project by harvesting keywords from web content and then applying term extraction methodologies to produce style guides and authoring guidelines for global English. 

After 4 years at OPP, I've decided to resign in order to become a Consultant, helping this way more organisations achieve a global, multilingual presence through robust and efficient processes.

K International Language Translation Services

After freelancing for a year, I decided to work for a translation agency to widen my skill set. At K International I was introduced to the main Project Management Principles: Budget Management, Risk Management and Resource Management. 

My role involved speaking with customers, identifying their needs and then drafting project plans and recruiting the suitable resources for projects. I've learned how to use Computer-Assisted Translation tools, such as MemoQ and SDL Trados, to create Term Bases and Translation Memories (TM) achieving this way consistency in terminology, and establishing efficient translation processes. 

I was also contributing to the content quality of products in various languages, by performing layout and editorial checks and by running automated QA checks. While working at K International I built a network of linguists, proofreaders and language professionals. I also had the opportunity to understand the translation industry and the needs of translation buyers. 

One of my biggest projects was the localisation of a major government body's website into Welsh. For this project, I was the Web Editor as well as the Project Manager.

I undertook this project as a Consultant Linguist after I graduated. My role as a QA Localisation Tester involved playing Video Games that were still in development by key Game Developers, such as EA Games, Sony and Polyphony Digital. Day-to-day tasks involved playing the games in order to test their linguistic functionality relating to sound synchronisation, content correctness and subtitles. Testing took place using different devices and consoles for each game. I tested games in Greek and French. The role involved hard work especially before key market release dates, to ensure the games were ready for launch on time and that the user experience was of the required quality standard.
