They try to answer it by:

❌ Proving everything all at once
❌ Sharing their needs instead of the company
❌ Giving answers that are too generic/general

But what often works better?

Stories that show your impact.

(I would do this for most interview questions btw)

Research suggests stories are remembered up to 22x more than facts.

And the best ones follow a clear structure:

Problem → Constraint → Action → Result

Here’s what that looks like: 

1. Problem
What challenge were you solving?

2. Constraint
What made it harder—tight deadline, limited budget, unclear direction?

3. Action
What steps did you take? What skills did you use? What was your role?

4. Result
What changed because of you? Use data when you can or clear outcomes.

Some questions I always come back to:

☑ Does this story solve a problem they care about?
☑ Can it be shared concisely in no more than a few minutes?
☑ Does it highlight your decisions, not just your tasks?
☑ Will they remember both the result and how you work?
☑ Does it feel like your story, not a script?

When those answers feel solid, your story will feel solid too.

At the end of the day, you don’t need a perfect answer.
You need a structured one that connects.

There's a Japanese concept called Ikigai - it means "reason for being."

It's basically the intersection of what you're great at, what energizes you, what pays well, and what fits your life.

I've adapted it into a career framework I use with clients to find that sweet spot.

It's four overlapping questions:

→ What are you trusted to deliver? (Your zone of mastery)
→ What would you do even if it didn't pay? (What drives you)
→ What's actually in demand? (Market reality)
→ What fits your life right now? (Not just your ambition)

The magic happens at the intersection.

That's where you get focus, clarity, and motivation without burning out.

Now comes the part nobody posts about.

Yesterday was about flowers, dinners, and curated moments.

Today, people return to normal life.
Normal routines.
Normal workplaces.

And interestingly, the workplace is still one of the most common places people meet partners.

Office romances aren’t rare.
They’re just rarely talked about honestly.

Some data to ground us first:

▸ Nearly 1 in 3 professionals say they’ve dated a coworker at least once
▸ Over 40% of long-term workplace relationships start from collaboration, not intention

▸ And yes… a significant number also end in awkward meetings, silent Teams chats, or quiet job switches

▸ 22–25% of long-term couples report meeting at work

▸ Hybrid work hasn’t reduced this. It has intensified it inside smaller, closer teams

▸ HR complaints related to workplace relationships rise after breakups, not during relationships

So the question isn’t “Does it happen?”

It’s: “Should YOU do it?”

Let’s skip the fairy tale and talk about the real pros and cons.

↳ WHAT WORKS ABOUT DATING A COWORKER

▸ Shared context
You already understand each other’s stress, schedules, and deadlines. That reduces friction early.

▸ Trust builds faster
Working together creates familiarity. Familiarity often feels like safety.

▸ Time alignment
Careers, routines, and priorities are already somewhat aligned. That matters more than people admit.

↳ WHAT COMPLICATES IT

▸ Power and perception
Even without a reporting line, perceived favoritism can quietly damage credibility.

▸ Emotional spillover
Conflict doesn’t stay personal when you see each other in meetings the next morning.

▸ Career trade-offs
Research shows that after a workplace breakup, one person often changes roles or exits within a year.

↳ THE PART NO ONE SAYS OUT LOUD

Most workplace relationships don’t fail because of love.

They fail because boundaries were never defined.

Not professionally.
Not emotionally.
Not socially.

A few grounded observations I’ve seen repeatedly:

▸ The healthiest couples keep work and relationship identities separate

▸ They don’t overshare at work or under-share at home

▸ They’re prepared for both outcomes: success or exit

They ask themselves early:
“Would I still respect this person if we weren’t together?”

POST-VALENTINE’S DAY REALITY?

Dating a coworker isn’t wrong.
But it’s never neutral.

It amplifies both connection and consequence.

So before you lean into the chemistry, ask yourself:

▸ Does this add clarity or complicate my career?
▸ Can I protect my professionalism if emotions shift?
▸ Am I choosing this consciously… or conveniently?

Love is powerful.
Careers are fragile.

Both deserve intention.
