Many candidates overthink this question.

They try to answer it by:

❌ Proving everything all at once
❌ Sharing their needs instead of the company
❌ Giving answers that are too generic/general

But what often works better?

Stories that show your impact.

(I would do this for most interview questions btw)

Research suggests stories are remembered up to 22x more than facts.

And the best ones follow a clear structure:

Problem → Constraint → Action → Result

Here’s what that looks like: 

1. Problem
What challenge were you solving?

2. Constraint
What made it harder—tight deadline, limited budget, unclear direction?

3. Action
What steps did you take? What skills did you use? What was your role?

4. Result
What changed because of you? Use data when you can or clear outcomes.

Some questions I always come back to:

☑ Does this story solve a problem they care about?
☑ Can it be shared concisely in no more than a few minutes?
☑ Does it highlight your decisions, not just your tasks?
☑ Will they remember both the result and how you work?
☑ Does it feel like your story, not a script?

When those answers feel solid, your story will feel solid too.

At the end of the day, you don’t need a perfect answer.
You need a structured one that connects.

I’ve had jobs that look great on paper but still felt like I was in the wrong role.

I see this all the time with people “doing well”

Great title. Good money. Totally drained.

They think they need to blow up their career and start over.

But that's not it.

You don't need a career overhaul. You need realignment.

There's a Japanese concept called Ikigai - it means "reason for being."

It's basically the intersection of what you're great at, what energizes you, what pays well, and what fits your life.

I've adapted it into a career framework I use with clients to find that sweet spot.

It's four overlapping questions:

→ What are you trusted to deliver? (Your zone of mastery)
→ What would you do even if it didn't pay? (What drives you)
→ What's actually in demand? (Market reality)
→ What fits your life right now? (Not just your ambition)

The magic happens at the intersection.

That's where you get focus, clarity, and motivation without burning out.

Most executives spend 2-3 hrs a day job searching and get very little. Here's a breakdown of how I'd spend 1 focused hour each day.

First: 20 minutes on Visibility and Engagement

↳ Leave 10-15 intentional comments on posts from creators with big audiences, leaders at your target companies, and niche content in your space.

(Keep a list of the profiles you're targeting to save time)

Spend the last 5 mins engaging with anyone who interacted with you. Comment to start conversations, not to just be seen.

Then: 20 minutes on Outreach and Relationships

↳ Send 3-5 short, specific messages to target connections and people active on LinkedIn. No pitching. Just a real reason to connect. Then send 1-2 messages to old colleagues you have not talked to in a while.

Next: 10 minutes on Profile Work

↳ Optimize your headline, headshot, banner, and featured section for the roles you actually want. Aim for 5-6 recommendations from leaders, peers, and direct reports. Your profile is your first interview. Treat it that way.

Last: 10 minutes on Content Creation

↳ Build a small project that solves a real problem your target audience has. Turn that journey into content. 10 focused minutes a day stacks up fast over a few weeks.

There you have it.
You can rinse and repeat every hour.

Not doom-scrolling.
Not sending 10 'Easy Apply' applications.

The demand for remote work hasn't died down. 
But...remote job postings are at a 3-year low.
How I find remote opportunities ↓

That gap in supply and demand is real.
And it's making an already competitive market even harder for job seekers who need flexibility.

Remote jobs still exist; you've got to look for (and compete for) them differently:

Here is how to do it:

1. Search in the right places

Assuming you're looking for a 'remote possible' role,
Check out places like:

- We Work Remotely
- Remote[.]co
- FlexJobs
- Remotive
- Working Nomads
- Remote OK
- Jobspresso
- Pangian
- Dynamite Jobs
- Himalayas

These boards filter out hybrid and RTO noise.
Get cleaner results. Waste less time.

2. Follow the VC money into start-ups

Series A, B, and C funded companies are actively building teams. Many default to remote because they haven't locked into office leases yet OR they know they can poach top talent.

Use Crunchbase or TechCrunch's funding roundups to find companies that raised in the last 90 days.

Those companies will likely hire remote roles soon. 

3. 'Remote Ready' Resume & LinkedIn

Recruiters scan for this.
List tools you use: 
- Slack
- Zoom
- Notion
- Jira
- Asana
- Loom

Add a line in your about section that mentions distributed teams or async collaboration. Show that you've done it already. 

4. Network into the role before you apply

Remote roles get 3-5X more applications than on-site roles.
Applying and waiting doesn't work well here.

Find employees and connect with a short personal note.
Engage with the company's LinkedIn content.
Build a support network where possible. 

Warm applications convert at higher rates.
