Storytime: Meta just bought Limitless, the $99 pendant I've talked about before. 
The one that records everything you say, creates perfect searchable transcripts, 100-hour battery. For caregiving or tracking complex projects? The tech genuinely works. That capability is real. 

But also - the deal shut down service in the EU immediately. Users got 2 weeks to export before permanent deletion. US users got new terms under Meta's data policies. 

(Yes, always-on recording devices are ethically questionable - but that's not what I'm talking about here. Stay with me. Because this is bigger than one product) 

✨ ✨ Welcome to the playbook for capturing human memory ✨✨ 

...here's the mechanism.

→ You use AI notetakers for every meeting. The pendant for tracking ideas, medical info. Your brain stops encoding memories. Why bother when perfect transcripts exist? (cognitive offloading)
→ You don't take handwritten or typed notes anymore. Your records only only exist in someone else's system, under their terms.
→ Your brain adapts. After months, you're not "choosing to rely on it" - you're dependent. You search it up info when you need it because your own memory literally isn't encoded anymore.
→ One acquisition later, everything changes. New owners. New terms. New training data policies.
→ To keep using the system and the data your brain has literally rewired around? Accept the new TOS. Or lose access to your externalized memory.

The TL;DR:

We're using cognitive infrastructure that's privately owned, jurisdictionally fragmented, and can be sold overnight. WITHOUT ASKING QUESTIONS.

Your memory lives in systems you don't control, under terms you can't negotiate, that can change with one acquisition.

Quick q: When your externalized memory exists on someone else's servers, under terms that just became someone else's terms...who actually owns your cognitive capacity?

So this message is for Barb - who just cold-emailed me to sell me a list of teachers' personal contact info so I can...cold-email them. Without their consent. While they're already buried in work, underpaid, and drowning in vendor spam.

Barb, hear me out. You're not "helping educators." You're selling access to exploit them. Not cool.

👎 Those teachers never agreed to be on your list
👎 You're profiting off their data without permission
👎 You're enabling harassment of people who can't opt out of what they never opted into
👎 This probably violates CAN-SPAM, GDPR, and about a dozen other regulations

You know what teachers need? Respect. Resources. Smaller class sizes.
Not another inbox full of garbage from people who bought their way past "no."

Do better, Barbara. This ain't it.

🫵 Hey, so just a quick data-spam-management PSA in honour of my inbox being absolutely holiday BOMBED by companies I know damn well I unsubscribed from last year or never subscribed to in the first place 😠 

...oh, and also as someone who has spent two years in the thick of studying all the murk and filth of data brokering/sketchiness.

Every time you have to sign up for something or agree to a tick box, do this:

Make the company name your middle name.

Rebecca Sephora Bultsma.
Rebecca NikeCanada Bultsma.
Rebecca DoorDash Bultsma.

Then sit back and wait. Because when the spam inevitably rolls in, you instantly know who sold your info to the highest bidder and who you absolutely can blame for shady marketing consent practices, blurry list-sharing, intrusive inbox invasions, and who the sketchy companies playing fast-and-loose with your email are.

And then don't trust those companies again, and get rid of your loyalty cards. Trust me. If you give a mouse a cookie, and all that ( 🏆  if you know the reference) 🐭 🍪 

Bonus: this also makes your inbox a little less chaotic and a lot more entertaining.

Stay vigilant out there. Friends help friends protect their data, right?

👀 Guys, exciting news in the world of "AI features literally nobody asked for, and we absolutely don't need!" 👇  

Instagram just rolled out AI-generated comments. 

...you know, in case typing "Looking good!" was too much emotional labor at the end of a long day.

Basically, we're now asking Mark's Metabots to perform connection and humanity for us while we all secretly suffer from loneliness and feel disconnected and isolated. Hey, but at least we can be voyeurs in our own pretend social interactions! PLUS maybe people will think we're cool if our bots do a good enough job of coming up with witty comments, right?

Interestingly, the AI offers an "absurd" mode, which is accidentally the most honest option, because this entire premise is absolutely bonkers, because we are asking machines to mimic human warmth we're apparently too busy or insecure in our own abilities to express ourselves.

The part that still gets me is that sites like Instagram, in their very earliest days, were built to CONNECT us, and now we're adding technology to fake that we're doing a good job of connecting.

Random sidebar - just binged Stranger Things season 5 this weekend and WOW do I miss pre-cell phone life sometimes.

Anyway, looking forward to the day my AI comments on your AI-generated post about our AI-planned hangout that neither of us attends (maybe we can send our AI avatars tho?)

If you have no idea where to start with "AI agents,"  Google's latest release IS FOR YOU. It's basically just AI that can grab your email attachments and sort them into the right folders while you drink coffee. It takes 5-10 minutes, uses zero code, and you can use regular human words to describe what you want to automate. 

I also took a stab at posting a few video walkthroughs on YouTube to help you out. PS: If you expect production-level quality, you will be very disappointed.

My 2025 AI Wrapped!

I'm always fascinated by AI "tells" - and this is one I notice a lot:

AIs are weirdly absolutely obsessed with ghostly stuff and different versions of quietness 🤫 

Basically, if you have an AI write a story for you, everything is ethereal - you'll see lots of versions of whisper, shadow, or memory, plus things that are descriptively quiet, humming softly, for no obvious reason, and often in completely illogical ways, it's so weird.

I love that I wasn't alone in noticing this! Sam Kriss wrote an awesome article about this and other AI writing quirks in the NYT, and it was SO GOOD. It's called "Why Does AI Write Like...That? 👏 

Here's a direct excerpt about her experimenting (I'll include a full unlocked link to her article in the comments - worth the read, a FABULOUS writer!)

Sam:

"When I asked it to write a story about a party, which is a traditionally loud environment, it started describing “the soft hum of distant conversation,” the “trees outside whispering secrets,” and a “quiet gap within the noise.” 

When I asked it to write an evocative and moving essay about pebbles, it said that pebbles “carry the ghosts of the boulders they were” and exist “in a quiet space between the earth and the sea.” 

Over 759 words, the word “quiet” appeared 10 times. When I asked it to write a science-fiction story, it featured a data-thief protagonist called, inevitably, Kael, who “wasn’t just good—he was a phantom,” alongside a love interest called Echo and a rogue A.I. called the Ghost Code."
