#truestory - My resume client’s recruiter friend suggested his resume should go right from his name to the professional experience section. I had to explain what a branding section is and why he needs one! What is it?

➟ What is it?

The top third of the first page is the “branding section” and it provides an overview of the person.

➟ Why is it needed?

Most resumes are given a first glance for a total of 4 seconds. The reader needs to see what you’re about that quickly, and the branding section entices the person to keep reading.

➟ What are the elements of the branding section?

✓ Branding Statement – This is a 1 or 2 sentence phrase that describes the candidate perfectly.

✓ Bullets (optional) – I often add in a few bullets to highlight achievements or areas of expertise.

✓ Key Competencies – I will add in keywords that outline important capabilities.

✓ An optional quote that nails the strongest attributes of the person.

✓ An optional list of key industries or capabilities below the resume title, but is separate from the comprehensive list of key competencies.

The elements of a branding section might vary but are there to provide a summary and encourage the reader to keep reading.

One of the most effective ways to search for a job is by using a targeted job search – reaching out to 25-50 companies where you’d like to work. This is known as a “targeted job search.”

It can be a labor intensive exercise, but is fruitful in identifying job opportunities – some of which have not yet been posted.

Follow these steps:

1. Identify companies where you’d like to work. Start with preferred companies, geographies, and industries.

2. Identify hiring managers – or people who work in that department. LinkedIn search is a good tool for this.

3. Identify hiring managers’ contact info – a good resource is hunter dot io (web site)- discover the email pattern at the company, and then you can infer what this person’s email is.

4. Study the industry.

5. Research target companies.

6. Reach out with an inquiry letter & ask for an informational interview. Pro tip -  share a letter outlining your Value Proposition ahead of time.

The intersection of these is your PURPOSE - or in Japanese, your IKIGAI.
