I didn't fear losing my business.

I feared losing my answer to so, what do you do?

12 months ago at a business mastermind, someone asked me why I hadn't stepped back yet.

I gave them the usual answers.

The team isn't ready. 
The systems need work. 
Timing's not right.

Then they asked a different question:

I sat there. Silent.

Peripheral lens — what are you not seeing?

The myth: "I know my business inside out."

The truth: You're too close to see the weak signals.

Panoramic lens — what does the whole system look like?

The myth: "I've got a handle on everything."

The truth: You can't see the whole business when you're stood inside it.

You hire for sales but ops can't deliver.

You push for growth but finance is drowning.

You talk about culture but your leadership team is burned out.

Everything's connected.

If one part's broken, the whole thing limps.

The exercise: Draw your business on one page. Boxes and arrows. Where does work flow? Where does it stall? Where are you the glue? That's your starting point.

Telescopic lens — what needs deep focus?

The myth: "I need to fix everything at once."

The truth: You don't fail because you lack ideas.

You fail because you try to fix everything and end up fixing nothing.

I learned this the hard way.

I was fixing recruitment, rebuilding systems, chasing a new revenue stream and dealing with a key client issue all at once.

All I got was stress, indecision and slow progress.

Intelligence doesn't win.

Focus does.

Pick one thing.

A role that's not working.

A process that's bleeding time.

A number that's trending the wrong way.

Get clear.

Move fast.

Take action.

The exercise: Choose the one thing that, if you fixed it in the next 30 days, would free up the most capacity. Then go deep. Interview people. Audit the process. Measure what's happening. Rebuild it properly.

My biggest strength as a founder almost destroyed everything I'd built

I spent years addicted to ticking boxes. Chasing the next milestone, the next task, the next win like my life depended on it.

I trained with Olympic athletes. I get discipline. I get performance.

But I'd mixed up high performance with high control.

Michelle Johnston, Ph.D. called me out on my podcast. She asked:

"Are you focused on achievement and tasks, or on relationships and bringing out the best in your people?"

For years I was a Task Master, not a Connection Maker.

What that cost me was that:

• Top talent left because they felt like cogs in a machine
• Engagement tanked because there was no safety
• Innovation died in a culture of fear and "getting it done mentality".

The real enemy? The to-do list mentality.

I thought building a team was about getting shit done.

It's not. It's about building people who then build the business.

The shifts I'm making now are:

1. Auditing my calendar

I blocked out 3 hours a week just for one-on-ones. Not to review tasks. To actually listen.

To ask "What's blocking you?" and "What do you need from me?" instead of "Where are we on this?"

My best people now show up on my calendar before my urgent tasks do.

2. Creating psychological safety

I stopped praising speed and started praising honesty.

In our Monday team meeting, I now ask "What mistake did we make last week and what did we learn?" I go first. I share mine.

The shift from fear to trust didn't happen overnight, but it started when I stopped punishing people for missing deadlines and started asking why the deadline was unrealistic in the first place.

3. Start meetings with a human question, not the data

I used to dive straight into numbers. Now I ask things like "What's one win from your weekend?" or "What's on your mind today?"

Sounds soft. But I've watched my team go from robotic to real in 60 seconds.

And real people do better work than robots ever will.

Real wealth isn't in your bank account.

It's in the depth of the relationships you build.
