I recently received a recruiter message that frustrated me. It revealed a misconception I see far too often.

My legal operations background was cited as a qualifier… for an Executive Assistant role.

I want to be clear: this isn't about one role being better than another. EAs are highly skilled professionals, and great ones are genuinely hard to find. But Legal Ops and EA are two entirely different career tracks, and conflating them undersells both.

But here's what concerns me even more than the mislabeled recruiter message:

When Legal Ops gets bundled into another role (Legal Assistant/Legal Ops, Paralegal/Legal Ops, EA/Legal Ops) the legal ops work almost always gets de-prioritized in favor of the title role. Deadlines hit, capacity shrinks, and the strategic work gets pushed to the back burner.

Then the business looks around and asks: "What does legal ops actually deliver?"

The answer is: not much, because you never actually let it.

You can't measure the value of a function you've structurally buried. And you can't build organizational infrastructure as a side project.
