Before Google. Before SERPs. There was… the phone book.

When Gérard Mulliez (2025 Net worth: €26 billion) was naming his new retail store.

He first landed on “Ochan”, simpler to write, easier to remember.

But it sounded too Japanese.

So when he dropped the “O” and renamed the company: Auchan…  he unintentionally pulled off one of the first local SEO plays in business history.

The brand now start with an “A”.

Back then, people didn’t search on Google.

They flipped through the Yellow Pages (PagesJaunes SA)

And in a world sorted alphabetically, starting with an “A” meant you showed up first.

→ Free visibility
→ Top-of-mind awareness
→ More foot traffic

Most people think search engine optimization started with the internet.

But the instinct to rank higher in search?

It was already in play, long before digital.

And the ones who figured it out early?

They won the attention game.

P.S: “Auchan” means in the fields. In Spain, the store is named “Alcampo”.

This is the worst email I’ve ever received (and probably a scam).

Let me break it down for you:

→ Sent from a free @gmail.com address
→ No verified credentials
→ A security report exposing the vulnerabilities of my website
→ Attached screenshots with zero context
→ The photo on the report looks… questionable
→ The follow-ups included threats: “I'll upload website bugs at youtube and darkweb"

Yes. The dark web.

I get it, responsible disclosure matters. 

Security is serious business. But this wasn’t that.

It was poorly written, vaguely threatening, and borderline phishing.

And guess what?
It landed directly in my inbox.

Not spam. Not filtered. Not flagged.

If you’re still assuming deliverability equals trustworthiness, think again.

This email passed the filters, despite being:

❌ Unverified
❌ Possibly malicious
❌ Using fear as a method to collect "rewards"
❌ Unprofessional
❌ Sent from a random free email

Takeaways?

1. Your inbox placement doesn’t mean you’re doing cold email right

Add proof if you’ve got it, real results, familiar logos, relevant use cases.

And stop trying to close in the first message.
