How to not miss your penalty shots in life.
  
Same moment. Different state. Different destiny.
 
You can often predict whether a player will miss or score 
a penalty before the ball is kicked just by the walk.
 
Player 1  
Shoulders tense. Jaw tight.  
Focus: “Don’t miss.”  
Meaning: “If I fail, I let everyone down.”  
The body contracts. The shot hesitates.  
Often miss.
 
Player 2  
Body loose. Breathe steady.  
Focus: “Pick the corner.”  
Meaning: “This is my moment.”  
The body expands. The movement flows.  
Often goal.
 
Same distance. Same pressure.  
Different state. Different result.
 
 
WHAT IS A STATE?

The concept popularized by Tony Robbins is simple:
State is the combination of three elements:

1. Physiology  
Posture, breathing, movement. 
The body influences the mind.

2. Focus  
What you pay attention to. 
Threat or opportunity.

3. Meaning  
The story you assign. 
Failure or training.

Physiology shapes focus.  
Focus shapes meaning.  
Meaning drives action.  
Action drives results.

  
WHY it matters
 
Decisions Improve  
Emotional state influences risk perception 
(Lerner et al., 2015). 
 
Energy Drives Execution  
Performance follows physiological activation. 
(Jamieson et al. 2010)
 
Identity Is Reinforced  
Repeated emotional states shape self-perception
(Damasio, 1994).
  
  
WHAT actions to take 
  
1. Activate Your Body
  
Before important conversations or decisions: 
move. Stand tall. Deepen your breathing. 
Elevate intensity for 60–120 seconds.
Body leads mind
  
2. Direct Your Focus
  
Ask better questions.  
Not: “Why is this difficult?”  
But: “What is the opportunity here?”  
Focus creates feeling
  
3. Reframe Meaning
  
Events are neutral. Interpretation is not.  
Replace “This is a problem” with “This is training.”  
Meaning shapes reality
  
4. Interrupt Fast
  
When you feel contraction, catch it early. 
Stand up. Walk. Reset breathing. 
Disrupt the loop
  
5. Create Rituals
  
Elite performers anchor peak states through routines: 
music, movement, visualization, breath. 
Build your own pre-performance ritual.
Ritual creates reliability

Change Your State - Change Your Life

First Principles - Relationships. 
Why great relationships are not about you but about the other person and what you build together.

Lady Randolph Churchill, Winston Churchill’s mother, 
once attended two dinners with 
two different British prime ministers.

After the first dinner she remarked:
"When I left the table, 
 I thought he was the most brilliant man in England."

After the second dinner she said:
"When I left the table, 
I thought I was the most brilliant woman in England."

The first man impressed her.
The second man made her feel valued.

Great relationships when 
others feel seen, valued, and understood.

 
WHY it matters

Happiness
Quality relationships are the strongest 
predictor of long-term happiness 
(Waldinger & Schulz, 2023).

Health
Strong relationships significantly increase 
longevity and physical health
(Holt-Lunstad et al., 2010).

Resilience
Supportive relationships buffer stress and 
improve psychological resilience 
(Cohen & Wills, 1985).

 
WHAT actions to take

Five First Principles on Relationships

1. Trust
Trust grows through reliability and psychological safety. 
Keep your word, be consistent, listen without judgment,
and assume positive intent. 
Principle: Create psychological safety.

2. Understanding
Seek to truly understand the other person’s perspective, 
emotions, and aspirations. Ask thoughtful questions, 
listen carefully, and show genuine curiosity. 
Principle: Seek to understand first.

3. Appreciation
Express appreciation regularly. Notice small efforts, 
acknowledge strengths, and say thank you often. 
Principle: Show sincere appreciation.

4. Shared Meaning
Build experiences, rituals, and goals together. 
Travel, traditions, family habits, and common 
projects create shared memories and direction. 
Principle: Build something together.

5. Repair
Conflict is inevitable. What matters is repairing 
quickly. Apologize early, lower tension, and focus on
understanding rather than winning. 
Principle: Repair quickly.


FINAL thought

The secret of great relationships is surprisingly simple:
Make the other person feel bigger.
As writer Maya Angelou famously said:

“People will forget what you said, people will forget 
what you did, but people will never forget 
how you made them feel.”

First Principles - Relationships

Be a Free Spirit. 
Live by choice, not convention.

I find it fascinating what drives people 
to live their lives as they do.

There are countless explicit and implicit conventions 
about what a successful career looks like, 
what defines a great relationship, how to raise a family, 
and how to live healthily.

Many follow conventions without ever challenging them. 
They climb a ladder they never placed. 
They follow a script they did not write.

A free spirit is different.
“A free spirit is someone who is internally free enough 
to choose their life deliberately and 
brave enough to accept the consequences.”


WHY it matters

Agency
A free spirit strengthens agency 
Higher perceived control increases motivation, 
persistence, and performance under uncertainty 
(Bandura, 1997).

Coherence with What Matters
Living by chosen values increases coherence. 
When behavior aligns with intrinsic goals, well-being and 
sustained motivation rise significantly 
(Deci & Ryan, 2000).

Flexibility & Resilience
Detachment from rigid identity increases adaptability. 
Psychological flexibility improves resilience
(Kashdan & Rottenberg, 2010).


WHAT to do

1. Awareness & Detachment
List the conventions shaping your career, relationships, 
money, and health. Question each: 
Did I choose this or inherit it?
Principle: See the script

2. Curiosity
Expose yourself to alternative models of success 
and living. Read outside your field. Seek opposing views. 
Curiosity expands possibilities. 
Principle: Expand the frame

3. North Star
Define your core values, long-term ambition, 
and non-negotiables. 
Write a one-page personal constitution. 
Freedom requires direction, not drift. 
Principle: Choose your direction

4. Courage
Act in alignment even when approval declines. 
Make one visible decision that optimizes for meaning 
over optics this year. 
Freedom requires tolerating friction. 
Principle: Accept the cost

5. Discipline
Build systems that protect your autonomy: 
health routines, financial runway, deep work blocks. 
Discipline sustains freedom over time. 
Principle: Protect your freedom
 

FINAL thought
Being a free spirit is not about rebellion. 
It is about authorship.
Not escaping structure but choosing it. 
Not rejecting responsibility but owning it.

Be A Free Spirit

Either / Or:  How to make major life decisions?
A simple question provides the right path. 

Major life decisions. Everyone faces them.  
Do I pursue this career or that career?  
Do I stay in my current job or change?  
Do I engage with this partner or another?  
Do I commit to the relationship?  
Should we get married?  
Should we have children?
  
All of these are major life decisions.
  
Some decisions feel clear; 
Others are far less obvious.  
Because they offer different paths.  
They involve trade-offs. 
Those choices can lead to regret
The regret of an alternative life.
  
I recently came across a beautifully 
simple question for navigating such choices.  
It comes from Søren Kierkegaard in Either/Or:
  
“𝗢𝗻 𝗺𝗮𝗷𝗼𝗿 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀, 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀 
𝘄𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵.”
  
 
WHY it matters
  
Clarity
Focusing on intolerable regret simplifies 
complex choices by revealing what truly matters, 
reducing cognitive overload and indecision 
(Iyengar & Lepper, 2000).
  
Commitment
Decisions aligned with deeply held values 
create stronger motivation and persistence  
(Self-Determination Theory; Deci & Ryan, 2000).
  
Life Satisfaction
People who make decisions consistent with 
intrinsic priorities report higher long-term 
life satisfaction and lower regret 
(Schwartz et al., 2002).
  

WHAT to do 
  
1. Imagine Both Futures
Visualize both life paths in vivid detail
career, relationships, daily life, identity. 
Notice which imagined future creates 
deeper excitement or discomfort.
 
2. Identify the Regret
 Ask: ten years from now, which missed path 
would create the heavier regret? 
Regret reveals priorities
  
3. Remove Perfection
Accept that no choice eliminates trade-offs. 
Every meaningful path sacrifices another possibility. 
Life is trade-offs
  
4. Follow Aliveness
Notice which option feels more alive, meaningful, 
or expansive, even if it is harder or riskier. 
Growth usually lives there. 
Energy signals direction
  
5. Commit Fully
Once chosen, stop revisiting the alternative path. 
Invest your energy fully in building the life you selected.
Commitment creates meaning

Overthinking feels productive, but it quietly keeps your life on pause.

It comes from two things: not being confident in yourself and not trusting others.

This creates a mental loop where you overthink everything to have your own back.

❌ You doubt your boundaries.
❌ You question your needs.
❌ You second-guess your feelings.
❌ You undervalue your worth.
❌ You doubt your competence.
❌ You question your desires and goals.

So you overthink every decision, every plan, every ask.

You make backup plans to your backup plans because you don't trust others to show up. You overplan everything because you can't rely on anyone else to have your back.

I know this pattern intimately. 
And how this is exhausting mental energy.


This pattern is codependency showing up as overthinking. You're looking outside yourself for certainty that doesn't exist. 

Seeking validation and perfect outcomes before you move instead of trusting your internal compass.

And it affects every relationship you have.

→ You overthink what to say in meetings because you don't trust how you'll be received. 
→ You overthink how to respond to your partner because you don't trust they'll accept your feelings.
→ You overthink setting boundaries with family because you don't trust your worth.
→ You overthink asking friends for support because you don't trust others to care.
→ You overthink every text, every email, every conversation.


Overthinking wastes your energy. There is no perfect outcome to reach. 

You have to take action to gain the experience that builds trust.

✅ Each time you act despite the overthinking, you prove to yourself you can handle whatever comes.

✅ Each time you trust someone and they show up, you learn you don't need to control every outcome.

Better thoughts help, not more thoughts. 
Making decisions from a better belief about trust and the possibilities of great outcomes.

The same situation can create conflict or connection depending on which pattern you activate.

You carry both patterns with you into every interaction. 

The fear-based pattern shows up as defensiveness, withdrawal, control, keeping score. 

The love-based pattern shows up as presence, compassion, curiosity, trust. 

They're not personality traits you're stuck with - they're responses you choose in real time.


You see this play out most clearly in relationships. 

Your partner comes home stressed and snaps at you:

FEAR-BASED RESPONSE 😤
→ You snap back defending yourself
→ You withdraw and give them the silent treatment
→ You make it about how they're treating you
→ You keep score of who's wrong more often

LOVE-BASED RESPONSE 💞
→ You recognize they're having a hard day
→ You stay present without taking it personally
→ You ask what they need from you right now
→ You respond to their stress with compassion


Same moment. Same stress. But two completely different relationships get built over time.

One response creates conflict and distance. The other creates a supportive and loving relationship.

You're either feeding the fear pattern or the love pattern. 

The question isn't what happened to you. It's which pattern you're choosing to live by right now.

Choose the pattern that creates what you actually want.

Stop losing yourself trying to create connection.

Most people believe intimacy requires a sacrifice.

Either you merge completely and lose yourself. Or you protect your independence and stay distant.

So you pick a side.

I see this pattern destroy relationships every day in my practice.

You abandon your needs, shrink your opinions, and mold yourself into whatever keeps the peace.

Or you go the other way. You protect your independence so fiercely that real intimacy becomes impossible.

Then it is no wonder why you feel resentful and disconnected.

Both patterns stem from the same false belief: You have to choose between being yourself and being connected.

You do not.

The strongest relationships hold both. You stay tethered to yourself while staying deeply connected to your partner.

Here is how:

CREATE THE VISION 🎯
Being authentically in relationship
→ Name what matters to you outside of "we"
→ Get clear on what connection looks like for you
→ Notice where you have been choosing between them
→ Define what you need to honor both

LET GO OF WHAT'S KEEPING YOU STUCK 🌊
Minding the mindsets and habits  
→ Making their emotional state your responsibility
→ Waiting for them to change first
→ People-pleasing to avoid tension
→ Needing to win every disagreement 

ESTABLISH CONNECTION TO SELF AND OTHER 💫
Proactively creating what you desire 
→ Embrace a daily self-regulation practice
→ Hold space for their feelings and your own
→ Speak your truth without needing agreement
→ Make decisions based on shared values

Creating a successful and radiant relationship requires both partners to fully show up. It is about fully holding both at the same time.

Even when you go first and it seems you are the only one showing up. Eventually they meet you.  

You can be fully yourself and deeply connected. You can speak honestly and stay close. You can have needs and care about theirs.

That is what a richer life in relationship looks like. ✨

An elephant stuck, a tractor helping out.

That's what real partnership looks like.

Standing strong together in everyday life.

We're all in this collective human experience together. 

You'll fall into ditches. So will your partner.
The richness comes from how you show up when one of you is stuck.


Most partnerships miss that richness because they're running these dysfunctional patterns:

THE INDEPENDENT PATTERN 🧱 
You refuse the "tractor" - won't accept help, see needing support as weakness
→ Can't admit you're in the ditch
→ Stay stuck to protect your pride and independence
→ Shows up as isolation, stubbornness, going it alone
→ You focus on proving you don't need anyone

THE CODEPENDENT PATTERN 🔗 
You jump into the ditch with the elephant instead of helping from solid ground
→ Make the other person's problem your own
→ Take on their burden and lose yourself in it
→ Shows up as over-functioning, people-pleasing
→ You focus on saving them vs of empowering them

THE DEPENDENT PATTERN ⚓ 
You rely on the "help" to the point where you can't do for yourself, it keeps you stuck or small
→ You can't operate without confirmation and backup
→ Creates reliance instead of empowerment
→ Shows up as helpless, avoiding responsibility
→ You focus on being taken care of vs evolving 


Relationships with these patterns don't usually make it long term. 

What's needed instead is interdependence. 

INTERDEPENDENT PARTNERSHIP 🔥
You own your sovereignty, and know when to ask for and when to offer help, and receive it when it's given 
→ Both people stay grounded in their own strength
→ Create a solid foundation to support each other  
→ Shows up as mutual respect, healthy boundaries 
→ You focus on bringing out each other's power

Interdependence is the smooth, joyful, and collaborative way of being in a relationship for the grand experience of life you're designed for.

Stop defaulting to your patterns and start owning your power.

The more you own your feelings, the richer your life becomes.

If we want to break old patterns, grow in new ways, or create something different in our lives and relationships, we have to start by working with what’s actually driving us.

That means paying attention to what we feel.
Most of us were never taught how to do that. 

We were told to stay calm, toughen up, be rational or appropriate. Emotionality was often discouraged, especially for men.


So we never really learned how to use our feelings in a way that actually supports our growth and full human experience. 

We stay shutdown or reactive. We miss what’s really going on underneath. We miss the opportunity to address what's needed or to savor the good. 

Emotional literacy changes that. It teaches us how to own what we feel, support ourselves with more care, and relish the blessings life has to offer. 


Here is a simple framework to get you started to change patterns keeping you stuck: 

1. Name the feeling
→ Get specific about what you’re feeling
→ Use clear language instead of vague labels
→ “I feel hurt” instead of “I feel off”

2. Find the need underneath
→ Identify what the feeling is asking for
→ Tune into what would bring relief or support
→ “I feel hurt → I need comfort or understanding”

3. Take care of the need
→ Respond to the need instead of reacting 
→ Offer support to yourself or make a clear request
→ “I need comfort → I’m going to ask for the support”

Feelings are the GPS of life. Learning to work with them doesn’t make you too sensitive or weak.


Addressing the feelings that don't feel good makes you more grounded, more resilient, and more capable of creating what you actually want.

Savoring the ones that feel good raises your aliveness quotient and deepens your capacity for joy.

This is how patterns shift.
This is how connection deepens.
This is how real change becomes possible. ✨

It's not your circumstances that are keeping you small, it's your mental habits.

The mental habits you've been running on autopilot are making you anxious, keeping you stuck, and playing smaller than you're capable of.

You defend them. Rationalize them. Build your life around them.

But they sabotage your growth, your relationships, and the life you want to create. 

During the toughest times in my life, I recognized these sabotaging mental habits. I've worked to reprogram them, and it's changed everything.


Here are 7 mental habits to watch out for and to change:

1. Comparison
You measure yourself against everyone else's highlight reel and feel behind no matter what you achieve.
→ Track your own growth, not someone else's timeline.

2. Overthinking
You analyze every angle and scenario until the opportunity passes or the decision is made for you.
→ Trust your first instinct and course-correct as you go.

3. Procrastination
You avoid the task that would actually change your life, then carry the stress and guilt of not doing it.
→ Make it so small you'd feel ridiculous not starting.

4. Perfectionism
You won't start until conditions are perfect, you feel certain, or you know you'll get it right.
→ Start messy because movement creates momentum. 

5. Comfort
You default to what feels safe and familiar, even when it's draining you or keeping you stuck.
→ Build capacity for discomfort so growth becomes possible.

6. People-pleasing
You prioritize everyone else's needs over your own, then resent them for it.
→ Practice focusing on what matters to you first. 

7. Quitting
You start strong, but when it gets hard or slow, you convince yourself it's not worth it.
→ Align your investment to your purpose so quitting is not an option. 


Changing these isn't about willpower, it's about recognizing the pattern and choosing differently.

When you catch yourself running an old habit, pause and ask: Is this serving the version of me who lives an expanded life?

Then practice the new behavior to fit the version you are becoming.

Who you've been doesn't have to dictate who you become.

The question isn't how big you can get, it's who thrives because you're in their life.

Out of 8 billion people on this planet, you chose one person to share your entire human experience with. That's significant, that's divine. That's utterly magnificent. 🔥

Think about the magnitude of that choice.
But we get stuck in the mundane and lose sight of what we actually have.


When you step back and see your relationship from a higher perspective, it's humbling. 

This isn't about splitting chores or managing schedules. It's about having a grand human experience together. Evolving yourselves. Doing right by each other's journey.

Most couples operate from a "me vs. you" mentality without even realizing it. 

I see this in my sessions with couples, where the partners want to be heard so badly that they throw their partner under the bus. 

When their partner "messes up", they focus on protecting themselves and on making sure they know they're wrong. 😬


That mindset destroys what you're trying to build together. 

⚠️You can't build union when you're keeping score. 
⚠️You can't create alignment when you're competing. 
⚠️You can't have a shared vision when you're focused on winning over them.

Your partner forgets to pick up groceries again. You have a choice.

I used to think slow progress meant I was falling behind.

Steady wins the race

Real support isn't always doing it for someone, it's helping them keep going.

Most of us learned that being supportive means jumping in when someone's struggling. Having the answer before they even ask. Fixing things. Playing hero.

That's not support. That's rescue. And rescue keeps people dependent.

Real support is standing behind someone while they walk their own plank. Holding steady when they wobble. Trusting they can push through even when you want to make it easier.


When you play hero instead of holding steady:
→ You give advice when they need you to listen
→ You solve it so they never learn to trust themselves
→ You take over and wonder why they stay helpless
→ You carry their weight and resent them for it
→ You make yourself indispensable and call it love

Real support looks different:
→ You stay present while they figure it out
→ You ask what they need instead of assuming
→ You hold space for doubt without fixing it
→ You remind them of past wins when they forget
→ You let them feel the fear and keep going


The best partnerships are reciprocal. You take turns on the plank. Sometimes their steady presence is what gives you courage to keep going. Sometimes you're the one holding steady so they can take the risk.

Both require trust. Stepping out when you might wobble. Staying present when every instinct says to fix it.

Growth happens when you create conditions where both people can take a risk, be brave, and grow.

The stronger you are in yourself, the more space you create for the people around you to grow.

Gaslighting in a relationship cuts deeper than most people realize.

It doesn't just shake your confidence. It chips away at your sense of reality. It makes you question your memory, your judgment, your worth, and even who you are.

Love is meant to be the place where you feel safe, held, and seen.

Gaslighting flips that into a space where you feel small, confused, and unsure of what's real.


Here are the two main types of gaslighting and how to re-empower yourself:

🔥 CONTROLLING GASLIGHTING
They erase your reality, twist truth, and control.

1. Denying your reality
Insist conversations or events never happened.
🌿 "I trust my memory and my experience."

2. Isolating you
Cut you off from friends and support.
🌿 "I choose who's in my life and who supports me."

3. Using confusion
Twist details to make you doubt yourself.
🌿 "I know what I heard and I trust my understanding."

4. Doubting your worth
Tear you down so you feel small.
🌿 "I am enough and I know my worth."

5. Lying blatantly
Deny their part, even with proof.
🌿 "I stand by what I know is true."

6. Pressuring with coercion
Use guilt or threats to control you.
🌿 "Love is built on respect, not pressure."


❄️ DEFLECTING GASLIGHTING 
They dodge blame, dismiss feelings, and deflect.

7. Shifting blame
Pin their mistakes on you.
🌿 "I'll own my part, the rest is yours."

8. Withholding info
Stonewall or refuse to engage.
🌿 "This matters to me, let's come back to it."

9. Changing the subject
Deflect to avoid responsibility.
🌿 "We'll get to that later, first let's finish this."

10. Questioning memory
Insist you misremember what happened.
🌿 "I trust what I've remembered and recorded."

11. Downplaying your concerns
Dismiss your feelings as too much.
🌿 "My feelings are valid and deserve to be heard."

12. Undermining confidence
Belittle your abilities and strengths.
🌿 "I know my abilities and I trust them."


Once you recognize the patterns, you can stop second-guessing yourself. You can name what's happening. And you can begin standing in your truth again.

Real love doesn't leave you confused about what happened or whether you matter. 

It makes you feel more like yourself and cherished.

The fights about money, where to live, parenting decisions aren't actually about those things.

My clients always come in saying "we can't communicate." But after over three decades with my husband and doing this work with couples, I know that's not what's breaking the relationship.

It's your programming.

The recurring friction and conflicts. The sensitivities that keep showing up. Those familiar fights you've had a hundred times. 

They all stem from your beliefs, narratives, and scripts. From your habitual emotional patterns and ingrained responses in interactions and to life.

They all stem from the level of awareness you're living from.


You can learn all the tools, say the right things, try to stay calm, but if you keep operating from that same awareness level you'll keep recreating patterns like:

➝ Defensiveness when they question you
➝ Control over how things get done
➝ Attachments to being right
➝ Overgiving that builds resentment
➝ Shutdown when it feels like too much
➝ Distance to protect yourself
➝ Lack of trust or abundance

This is because it's all you know. It's familiar, conditioned, automatic.

When those patterns are running your relationship, it starts to feel like you're stuck having the same conversation on repeat. 

Over time, it wears down the connection and limits what's possible between you and in your life.


Real change happens when you start operating from a different level.

A higher level of awareness that shifts your mindset and how you show up.

Then things actually start to move:
➝ You stop reacting from old conditioning
➝ You start choosing how you show up
➝ You create space for a different kind of connection
➝ You build a relationship that actually supports the life you want

That's the work. Not fixing your partner, managing behavior, or improving communication in and of itself.
