I'm the cofounder and CEO of three companies: SparkToro, software that makes audience research accessible to everyone, indie game maker Snackbar Studio, and the vastly superior alternative to Google Alerts: Alertmouse. I'm also the author of Lost and Founder: (2018), prev founded & led Moz (2001-17) and am a frequent keynote speaker on marketing and entrepreneurship topics. But, I'm probably best known as the amateur chef husband of renowned author, Geraldine DeRuiter.

I co-founded SparkToro (with Casey Henry) to enable high quality audience research for marketers, PR folks, entrepreneurs, and product builders without the need for expensive, time-consuming, inaccurate surveys or impossible-to-scale manual research.

AI responses aren't lies; they're rarely dead wrong. But they're also nowhere near consistent. If you're using Google AI, ChatGPT, or Claude to get lists of recommendations (products, brands, etc.), or if you're trying to track if your own brand/product/entity in their responses, please arm yourself with this knowledge first.

Yesterday I published a heap of charts, graphs, dataviz, and stats... but for some people those don't land. So I made a short video attempting to sum up the painstaking AI consistency research that went near-viral after yesterday's launch (30K views in the first 24hrs!). How consistent are AI tools when asked for a list of brands/products?

And do the answers mean those AI tracking tools are selling you a boondoggle of snake oil chicanery?

Oh my goodness, buckle up, because the answer took 3 months, dozens of surveys, thousands of AI requests, and more than a dozen graphs, charts, and visuals to uncover. Below, I've pasted just a little taste (3/15) of the data visualizations in this research, and, apologies, but for the full findings, including the conclusion, you're gonna have to read the post. 😎

Nobody knows how to hate like LinkedIn's algorithm. They hate links with a passion, so much so that the classic "link in comments" workaround is now failing, too. LinkedIn's process? Just hide the comment, too!

But, for y'all who wanna get clever and are willing to put in a bit of work, it's still possible to drive traffic/signups/motivated visits with the right techniques, and that's the focus of this week's #5MinuteWhiteboard 👇

My advice:
Step 1 - monitor your search console ratio on branded terms, keeping a special eye on those where clicks:impressions is <65%.
Step 2 - set up brand mention alerts (because what others say about you on the web is how AIs decide what to say about you)
Step 3 - when a mention comes along that says great things about you and fits your positioning... QUOTE IT. CITE IT. LINK IT. SHARE IT.

When your inventor friend is laid up after surgery, but already paid for a demo slot at CES Unveiled, what do you do?

DAMN RIGHT. You offer to fly to Vegas and present to hundreds of journalists in their stead. (even though you're more than a bit nervous 😅😅😅)

So, friends, especially #PR friends -- we could really use any advice on how to talk to journalists and influencers in the CES tech world.

I am a "full stack" CMO helping Tech companies define and communicate value to their clients and stakeholders for a successful growth. My experience in both marketing and product helps me stay customer centric, and handle efficiently both strategic and operational stakes.
   
I worked in different industries, highly competitive and under heavy transformation. I designed and marketed innovative products in complex international markets. I transitioned into Tech in 2021, looking for greater impact and agility.  I'm particularly interested in FinTech and GreenTech, and I also worked with HRTech, InsurTech and FMCG clients.

I started in a scaleup environment at Estée Lauder Russia. My company grew from 11 to 200 persons in 3 years, and I ended up as Clinique Marketing Director, managing a growing team and expanding marketing plans - we were opening 2 to 3 shops per month.

I then came to France for a postgraduate management program at Sciences Po and joined Renault. I built the methodology for understanding international customer needs, strategized the brand & product lineup, developed innovative concepts such as Kwid and Arkana, and led France small cars marketing team - backed by quantitative and qualitative data all along. I launched first Renault hybrids in France, with multiple growth marketing experimentations and digital tools, and achieved the target mix ahead of time with a strong customer and dealer network support. I completed INSEAD General management program in 2018.

After I moved into startup world, I added relevant trainings from Maria Schools and Growth Tribe. I intervene on the full funnel: from awareness, acquisition and activation  to retention, revenue and referral. I worked with FinTech and GreenTech startups as part-time CMO and on project basis, and in 2023 I joined KNAVE, a FinTech developing and operating all-term rental programs, as their 1st CMO.

Avec une mission simple à dire, mais complexe à exécuter: faire en sorte que ce que vous construisez soit compris, désiré et utilisé.

🫶Vous connaissez les corporations médiévales? Celles qui ont laissé leur trace dans les noms des rues à Paris - Quai des Orfèvres, rue des Tanneurs, rue de la Ferronnerie? Je suis sûre qu'hier soir on a recréé la corporation des Marketeurs, mais de façon résolument moderne, à quand notre plaque sur une des façades parisiennes?
 
Au Moyen Âge, ces rues et les corporations associées fonctionnaient comme de véritables clusters métiers avant l’heure - ils influençaient la réglementation, organisaient la transmission du savoir, faisaient preuve de solidarité… tout y était.
 
🌟La naissance du projet ambitieux 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐄𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭 dont la première édition a eu lieu hier témoigne de ce besoin toujours présent: ne pas rester seul face à ses questions. Partager ce qui marche. Forger ses convictions dans un débat sur des sujets complexes. Rire et boire des verres ensemble.

🏟️ “Est-ce que ça vaut la peine d’investir autant dans un moment éphémère ?”
C’est la question que Tony Estanguet et son équipe se sont posée en lançant le projet des JO de Paris 2024. 

Et franchement, il y avait de quoi douter :
➡️ 5 candidatures françaises refusées avant
➡️ un projet qui prend 10 ans de vie
➡️ des milliards d'euros en jeu pour quelques semaines de compétition
 
Mais hier soir, au WOMEN FIRST Club, il nous a donné une réponse lumineuse.
✨️ Oui, ça vaut la peine. Parce que l’éphémère peut être inoubliable.
 
Tony n’est pas seulement un champion olympique, c’est un stratège du sens collectif.
Il nous a parlé de vision long terme, de résistance au découragement, de feuille de route claire pour atteindre l’intensité émotionnelle que seuls les Jeux de cette envergure peuvent provoquer.

🎯 Commencer par la fin. Se demander dès le départ : qu’est-ce qui ferait de Paris 2024 les Jeux les plus beaux, les plus exemplaires ?

Puis construire en gardant cette vision comme cap. Exactement comme un athlète de haut niveau : discipline, rigueur… mais aussi envie de magie.
💡 Une punchline qu’on garde :
“On a besoin, en tant qu’humains, d'éprouver parfois des émotions très fortes.”

Bien sûr, il a aussi fallu combattre le pessimisme ambiant. Gérer beaucoup d'imprévus. Convaincre les sponsors. Assurer les fondamentaux et gérer l'opérationnel, beaucoup d'opérationnel.
 
Et recommencer une nouvelle vie après.
