I'm the cofounder and CEO of three companies: SparkToro, software that makes audience research accessible to everyone, indie game maker Snackbar Studio, and the vastly superior alternative to Google Alerts: Alertmouse. I'm also the author of Lost and Founder: (2018), prev founded & led Moz (2001-17) and am a frequent keynote speaker on marketing and entrepreneurship topics. But, I'm probably best known as the amateur chef husband of renowned author, Geraldine DeRuiter.

Search happens everywhere. Not just Google, ChatGPT, and Bing. Our latest project with Datos, A Semrush Company analyzed search on 41 major websites via their desktop panel and found that if you broaden the definition of search, Google is 73%, not 90%+. And ChatGPT is 3.2%, well behind several players rarely mentioned in the conversation.

And, if billions of searches are taking place on dozens of sites, not just "traditional" and "AI tools," maybe SEO should be bigger than those two categories as well ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

At Eximo Marketing we create customer informed marketing strategy. 

That means we go deep on customer research, widen our understanding with external data and academic data, and use all of that to help create your marketing strategy. 

I'm a big believer in the power of talking to consumers. The insight that you get from an hour with a customer is better than any spreadsheet I've ever seen. That doesn't mean I don't use quant (I love it) but it's used to add depth to qual, not replace it. 

I‘ve been in marketing since 2001, focused on marketing strategy since 2015 and running Eximo Marketing since 2017. 

I’m one of those weird people who really loves what they do and bring that passion and energy to every client engagement. I know not everyone feels the same way! So I aim to keep everything we do simple and accessible.

If we’ve met, you’ll know my mouth does an awful lot of work, so it won’t be a surprise that I host a podcast, guest lecture at two universities, host events and speak at conferences. 

The Strategy Sessions podcast is me interviewing amazing marketers from around the world to find out what makes them tick. 

With the Mini MBA and MSc in Marketing under my belt as well as a passion for education, I enjoy guest lecturing at LJMU and working with UniVaasa (in Finland) on their online course. 

My event hosting is about bringing an informal style to events and my style is perfect for less formal events or those occasions when the audience needs to feel involved in the event, not just spectators at it. 

As a professional speaker, I combine academic research, real world experience and an engaging style that works with the audience (rather than talking at them). The three boxes I look to tick in every keynote are: educational (you’ll learn something), effective (you’ll be better at your job) and entertaining (you’ll have a good time).

I’ve spoken at events in the Europe, North America and the Caribbean. If you need a keynote to talk about marketing strategy, marketing fundamentals and why they're not dead, strategy v tactics or using consumer psychology to improve your marketing, then I’d love to hear from you.
