Wat een innovatiekracht! Wat een energie! Wat een feest!

Gisteren deden ruim 150 studenten mee aan de landelijke pitch battle van Inholland University of Applied Sciences. Ondernemende studenten uit Nederland en internationale entrepreneurs via een 'exchange program' dongen mee naar de winst: een aantrekkelijke geldprijs, waarmee zij hun studentbedrijf naar nog grotere hoogtes kunnen tillen. 

Entrepreneurs vanuit de InHolland-domeinen Agro, Food & Life Sciences (AFL), Techniek, Ontwerpen & Informatie (TOI), Creative Business (CRB) en Business Finance & LAW (BFL) sierden het podium. Stuk voor stuk gaven zij invulling aan hun droom om de wereld een stukje mooier te maken. 

Met échte geldprijzen, sponsoring van Jopen BV Haarlem en Stichting Stadsgarage (impact prijs!) én de belofte van Fabian van der Horst de innovaties van de winnende bedrijven te zullen inkopen en als kerstcadeaus aan de medewerkers van Inholland te zullen aanbieden, maakt de pitch battle waardevolle groei en professionalisering door.

Samen met heel enthousiaste en bevlogen ondernemende mededocenten mag ik dit spektakel reeds vijf jaar op rij organiseren en begeleiden. Gisteren kreeg ik zelfs de eer om op dit vijfjarige lustrum van de pitch battle de plenaire warming-up te verzorgen. Dat smaakt naar meer, on to the next!

𝗘𝗲𝗻 𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗳𝘁 𝗯𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗻 𝗝𝗼𝗼𝗱𝘀 𝗡𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱! 

Van een herdenkings-cultuur naar de kracht van een netwerk-cultuur. 🎖️ 

Ik zat laatst in een panel over "Joods zijn in Nederland anno 2025." En je raadt het al… het gesprek ging over: Israël-Gaza, boycotten, WOII, antisemitisme, angst, pijn, trauma.
Allemaal belangrijke onderwerpen, maar wéér dezelfde connotaties. Het viel me op hoe reflexmatig we dit frame blijven reproduceren.

Toen ik voorzitter was van Ijar - Dutch Union of Jewish Students kreeg ik vaak dezelfde vraag van newcomers: “Hoe word je eigenlijk onderdeel van de Joodse gemeenschap in Nederland? Waar vind je Joodse mensen, netwerk, evenementen, kansen, support?”

En eerlijk: ik had geen antwoord.

Uit die vraag - en een sterke why - hebben Jesaja de Vos en ik vrijwillig Jewish Network Netherlands opgericht.

Inmiddels dé digitale Joodse infrastructuur van Nederland waar:
✅ Duizenden geverifieerde Joodse leden elkaar vinden
✅ 100+ Joodse organisaties deelnemen
✅ Netwerken, banen, woningen, investeringen en support samenkomen
✅ Distributie en zichtbaarheid gecentraliseerd zijn

Na 7 oktober stroomden de aanmeldingen binnen. Toen realiseerden we ons: dit is niet slechts “demand”, dit is een diepe behoefte aan belonging.

En precies dáár is onze groei op gebaseerd: belonging-based growth.

Wij faciliteren een veilige infrastructuur → daardoor ontstaat meer aanbod → meer Joods leven → de gemeenschap groeit → wat weer nieuw aanbod creëert. Een compounding effect.

Socioloog Mark Granovetter en professor at Stanford University schreef dat echte kracht in netwerken niet alleen in je inner-circle zit, maar juist in de “weak ties”; die lichte, natuurlijke verbindingen met mensen uit dezelfde achtergrond.

Since I started working at the Embassy, I’ve been reading 1 book every month. 

Not because I suddenly have more time (I don’t).

But because the moment you specialise in a field, your world quietly narrows, often without you noticing.

Work teaches you to go vertically, deeper into your specialized niche.

Books help you grow horizontally across ideas and perspectives. By staying a generalist, you can spot new opportunities and blue oceans, and you avoid becoming trapped by the limits of your own expertise.

“How do you get a job in diplomacy at an Embassy?” 

I get this question every week on LinkedIn.💡

Here’s the truth nobody tells you (number 3 is the most important):

1. 𝗦𝗼𝗿𝗿𝘆 𝗚𝗲𝗻 𝗭 𝗖𝗿𝘆𝗽𝘁𝗼 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗲𝘀, 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗦𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗡𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗔 𝗗𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲

It barely matters what you studied; it matters that you studied.

Soft skills cannot be taught, hard skills can. 

2.  𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗸 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗴𝗲𝘀

I arrived at the Foreign Office with Dutch, Hebrew, English, and German. 

They aren't just “extra skills” on your cv, they’re leveraged and give you access to opportunities you wouldn't have otherwise..

3. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝟱𝟭% 𝗥𝘂𝗹𝗲

Most people make bad decisions for one simple reason: binary thinking.

Good vs. bad.
Right vs. wrong.

That’s how dumb decisions are made: emotionally,  'gut instincts' and with zero nuance  

Smart people don’t think in binaries. They think in probabilities.
NOT: “Will X or Y happen?”
YES: “What are the probabilities that X, Y, or Z happens to be 10%, 50%, 80%?”

Almost every decision I make is a 51% decision. Because you never get 100% information for clarity. And mistakes in diplomacy aren’t always reversible. 

So if you can make decisions with 51% of the information, you can say with confidence: “Based on everything I knew at the time, this was the best possible choice.”

Because if you keep chasing 100% certainty decisions, you lose (valuable) time, relevancy, and decisions made too late to matter.
