I hosted this morning a group of 10 people from across VC Platform. We chatted casually on couches for up to two hours, with some food and coffee that sat nearby. It was a tremendous joy to compare notes on the latest across the industry, getting to know better people I knew a little bit, mostly from online correspondence, meeting others for the first very time when they stepped off the elevator.

Based on the initial feedback this morning, this structure and size worked for those who attended. The specifics of what was discussed, I'll keep between the dozen on hand, however the overarching message beyond this one session in a singular setting is that more people should prioritize and prize attending curated events with greater frequency. Because it's not the same to stay at home, or even to sit at the office. You gotta search for and sift through what you hope to find now and next.

I attended this weekend a shiva held by a contemporary after the sudden loss of his wife. Seated beside him was his brother-in-law, who was in mourning, too, after the passing of his sister. The brother-in-law elected to sit there instead of with his parents in another location. This was the kindest gesture, assigning someone else’s needs ahead of his own during a profoundly difficult time for all.

The husband of the deceased struggled to find words at times to greet the dozens who came through in the afternoon, some he knew personally, many I’m sure he didn’t recognize immediately. His brother-in-law held up the tent poles, passing around materials and sharing memories of his beloved sister. 

At one point, the husband began to speak about his wife, briefly, and the brother-in-law stopped what he had been saying at the moment, turned to his right, put his hand gently on the husband’s shoulder, and listened to what he wished to share with the room.

I walk away with something from every shiva house I visit, however that tender image won’t soon fade. Just the most incredible kindness imaginable.

Across industry online communities this quarter, I've been fielding requests related to replacing PR agencies, suggesting and then attending 1:1 calls with those seeking a change to their programs, in search of the longstanding solution they were promised that's failed to materialize. This type of chagrin with PR in particular surfaces every year, at the close of one and with the introduction of the next. However, I'm getting more involved this year than over past ones because I believe that (some) PR practitioners are - at last - shifting away from the stale 'You're asking me the wrong questions' and toward a healthier 'I've thought this through'.

Where such a discourse has starkly and unfortunately not changed is at agencies that continue to bait and switch and to nickel and dime, as if that's the only manner to carry oneself and to keep the lights on. There's something rotten at (most) agencies, and the business model itself poses obstacles to client success, of reaching the promised results, of satisfying clients at a premium price, and of behaving normally. I've found in my field of VC Comms that the PR consultants, who in a different climate likely would be in-house leading PR teams somewhere, are the greatest value.

To be fair, I feel this way about all of marketing and much of business at large, that the ones willing to hustle on your behalf, who embed themselves best within your organization, who clearly understand the assignment because they've done it time and again, these are the ones to choose. PR shouldn't be something that keeps you up at night. You're better off going without than moving ahead with the wrong agency.
