The guy at the liquor store didn't even say anything anymore. He'd just slide them under the window. I'd have them finished by the time I hit the garbage can on the corner.

This was my routine. Every day after work. 

Before that, it was a glass of whiskey at home. Then I'd finish the glass and just swig from the bottle until I went to bed. I felt like shit every morning. But I kept going.

I stopped keeping bottles in the house. Thought that would help. It didn't. I just started stopping at the liquor store instead.

Every time I drank, I could feel my blood pressure spike. My body would get hot. It was telling me something I didn't want to hear.

Then I had a health issue. Doctor told me I should stop drinking. That's what i needed to hear- so i complied

A few months later, the doctor said the health issue wasn't related to alcohol. I could drink again if I wanted. Woo Hoo

So I had one drink- i can have a drink right? it's just one.

That's when I knew. I can't just have one. 

Something I heard on a sobriety podcast stuck with me: "It's easy to abstain. It's hard to start and stop." I've repeated thi sin my head a million times

That was the moment I decided I was done for good.

That was 2018. Before my daughter was born. Before COVID. Thank God, because I probably would have been drinking every day through the pandemic.

It's been almost 7 years now. My life is a million times better. I'm happier. I'm more present. I don't have this thing my body is constantly craving. I'm a better dad, a better husband, a better version of myself.

Sobriety is a personal journey and for eveyrone else its different. If you're reading this and something feels familiar, just know it's possible to stop. And life on the other side is better than you think.

Risk Manager | Ask me why your contracts promise more than your insurance covers

My client wanted to throw a private concert for friends and business associates. One night. Private Venue. 5 bands. Good music. Good people. Simple, right?

Then the venue sent over their insurance requirements.

Those would have cost him $25,000 in coverage. For. One. night.

But here's the part that made me do a double take. They also wanted a 3-year extended reporting period on the policy. A tail. For a single event.

Let me translate: my client would be paying for coverage that extends three years after the party ends. In case someone decides to sue in 2029 over something that happened on a Saturday night in 2026.

For a private concert. With friends.

I told my client: don't sign this yet. Let's push back.

We went back to the venue and negotiated. Explained that a 3-year tail for a one-night event was excessive. Asked them to keep the requirements at standard general liability.

They agreed.

The final cost? $7,000. Still not cheap, but a lot easier to swallow than $25K.

Here's the thing most people don't realize: Contracts containing insurance requirements aren't set in stone.  They send over thier wish lists- these are often a starting point, not a final answer. But most people just sign whatever's in front of them because they don't know they can negotiate. (when im the risk manager on the other side- i also advise my clients to ask for the moon)

That's where a good broker comes in.

Before htey came to me- they found a Ghost broker. This order taker quoted it at $25K and moved on. He said "this is what they're asking for" and left it at that. he didnt expain the whats or why's just dropped a quote on thier lap- they even got some of the limits wrong- so it wouldnt have even satisfied the contract

A Risk Manager reads the contract, spots the problem, and helps you negotiate in your favor

If you're hosting an event, signing a lease, bringing on a new client, or entering any contract with insurance requirements, send it to your broker first. Before you sign. Before you agree to anything.

My 8-year-old is teaching me something I forgot.

He's been practicing the Allen Iverson crossover every single day for three weeks.
Not because someone told him to. Not for a game. Just because he wants it to be perfect.

he pulls up youtube tutorials and learns all the different ways to work his feet and the nuances of the move

I watched him last night in the driveway for 20 minutes. Reset. Try. Reset. Try.
No phone. No distraction. Just the ball and the move.

I can't remember the last time I locked in on something that purely.

Kids don't practice to check a box. They practice because they actually want to be great at the thing.

Somewhere along the way most of us lose that.

There's one aspect of my job I never anticipated loving this much

When I got into insurance, I thought it would be policies and paperwork and sales calls. The usual stuff people picture when they think "insurance agent."

What I didn't expect was this: I get to talk to business owners all day. Every single day.

Not about coverage limits or premium increases. About their businesses. Their challenges. Their wins. What's keeping them up at night. What they're excited about.

A restaurant owner figuring out how to expand to a second location. A tech founder navigating their first big contract. A manufacturer who just landed a deal they've been chasing for two years.

I get a front row seat to all of it.

And yeah, my job is risk management. I'm there to make sure they're protected. But the part nobody tells you about this industry is how much you get to be a part of someone's journey.

I've watched clients go from scrappy startups to companies with 50 employees. I've seen them survive the hard years and celebrate the good ones. Sometimes I'm just helping with a certificate request. Sometimes I'm the first call when something goes wrong.

Either way, I'm in their corner.

That's the part I never saw coming. And honestly? It's the best part of what I do.

I saw a post from another insurance agent saying he stopped giving clients his cell phone number. Said it was about "respecting his time" and "setting boundaries."

I couldn't disagree more. 🙅‍♂️

Every client I work with has my cell. They can text me whenever they need to. And you know what? Not a single one has ever abused it.

Have I gotten texts on holiday weekends or at my kid's basketball game? Sure. But they're quick. I talk them off the ledge- We make a plan and execute during work hours.

Here's the thing. When a pipe bursts at 6am, your client isn't thinking about your boundaries. They're thinking about whether their business is going to survive the week. They need someone who picks up.

That's the job.

I've built my entire practice on being available. Not because I'm a pushover. Because I know what actually builds trust. It's not fancy proposals or slick presentations. It's answering the phone on a Saturday when someone's panicking.

Is your fancy insurtech answering your texts on a weekend when you're outside a loading dock and the security guy isn't accepting your certificate? I don't think so.

Texting with clients has become one of the best parts of how I work. Quick questions get quick answers. No scheduling a call. No waiting for email replies. Just a conversation, like you'd have with anyone you actually trust.

Some brokers treat availability like a burden. I treat it like a competitive advantage.

If your broker makes you feel like you're bothering them when you reach out, that's a problem. You're paying them to be in your corner. Not to protect their calendar.

I'm not saying you should call your agent 24/7. Obviously use discretion. But if they're purposely building walls between you and them, go find one who will be around when shit hits the fan after 5pm.

Your landlord's pit bull is covered. Yours isn't.

Make it make sense.

I rented in NYC for 10 years with the Becky, My love and sweetest pit bull. This issue isn't abstract to me.

In New York, homeowners can't be denied insurance or charged more because of their dog's breed. That protection has been in place since 2021.

Renters? No such luck. Until now.

A new bill (AB 10272) would extend the same protections to renters insurance. No more denying coverage, jacking up premiums, or limiting liability just because of your dog's breed.

Here's the backstory:

New York banned breed-based underwriting for homeowners back in 2021. But insurers found a loophole. They started limiting animal liability coverage within policies instead of denying them outright. The state closed that gap in 2023.

But renters were never included.

Why does this matter?

New York has the highest dog bite liability costs in the country. The average claim here is $110,488. That's 60% above the national average.

But here's the thing. Breed alone doesn't predict whether a dog will bite. Behavior does. A well-trained pit bull is less of a risk than a poorly trained golden retriever. The data on breed-specific bans has always been shaky.

If you're a renter with a dog on the "restricted breed" list, this bill could save you real money and real headaches.

If you're a landlord requiring renters insurance, this might change how your tenants shop for coverage.

The East Coast is getting buried in snow right now. Blizzard warnings from Maryland to Maine. Two feet in some places. Travel bans. Schools closed. The whole thing.

Meanwhile in Colorado, we're having one of the worst winters on record for snowpack.

Statewide, we're at 61% of normal. Parts of Summit, Eagle, and Pitkin counties are in "exceptional drought" - the most intense level. The state's snow telemetry network, which goes back to 1987, is showing the lowest snowpack on record.

Here's why this matters even if you don't ski:

No snow now means no water later. The snowpack is a natural reservoir. It melts slowly in spring and feeds our rivers and reservoirs. Denver Water is already preparing for water-use restrictions this summer. Dillon Reservoir is expected to get only 55% of its normal inflow. I read it already announced a delayed opening this summer 

🔥 🔥 And then there's fire season. 🔥🔥  

The Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control said conditions are worse than 2012 and 2020 - two of the most destructive fire years in state history. They're already bracing for an "unusually early and potentially severe" fire season.

If you own property in the foothills or mountain communities, now is the time to review your coverage. Carriers are paying attention. Some are tightening up in high-risk wildfire areas. Others are pulling out entirely.

We can't control the weather. But we can prepare for what's coming.
