I am involved in the management for older patients encompassing the diagnosing, treatment and prevention of multiple complex chronic medical and mental conditions.

A major part of the role involves screening, assessing and stratifying of patients with geriatric syndromes while developing treatment plans to manage diverse complex geriatric syndromes including frailty, sarcopenia, functional decline, falls, incontinence, malnutrition, cognitive impairment, mobility & balance, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis and polypharmacy. 

This includes coordinating a team of allied health specialists covering diverse medical and surgical disciplines in deploying holistic approach in managing health conditions to improve the quality of life of older patients.

Besides reviewing and increasing geriatric services offered covering falls clinic and memory clinics, I also identify and implement improvement opportunities to reduce patient waiting time and enhance efficiency.

Lastly, I facilitate periodic continuous medical education and knowledge sharing sessions.

Geriatrician

As a Specialist, I performed assessment and admission of patients with acute medical conditions across the intensive care unit, cardiology care unit (CCU) and cardiology ward.

Besides that, I also managed in-patient cases including investigations ordering and coordination, medical history and condition examination, daily condition monitoring and documentation along with discharge planning.

Lastly, I liaised with all members of the healthcare team to ensure effective patient management.

Internal Medicine Physician

Here, I performed various medical functions across the Dermatology, Geriatric, High Dependency Ward, Nephrology as well as Hematology units.

This included conducting diagnosis of illnesses and development of treatment plans and prescription of medicines while referral critical cases to specialist departments within the hospital.

Additionally, I carried out minor surgical procedure including incision and drainage of abscesses, wound suturing and removal of foreign bodies in the Emergency Department.

Lastly, I provided counselling and medical education to enhance the wellbeing of patients.

Medical Officer Department of Medicine

During this tenure, I carried out diagnosis and investigation of patient symptoms including assessment of medical and family history evaluation as well as evaluation of laboratory test results and radiology imaging.

Besides that, I provided assistance during surgeries and deliveries while performing ward rounds and bedside procedures.

Additionally, I worked closely with nurses, social workers, rehabilitations therapist, pharmacists and other health care providers towards ensuring excellent patient care.

I was the Head at the Health Psychology Programme which ran the Master of Clinical Psychology, and the Postgraduate Diploma in Health Psychology Programmes, as well as the Health Psychology Clinic. Aside from my administrative position,  I taught in both postgraduate programs as well as a number of undergraduate Health Sciences programme (i.e. Audiology & Speech Sciences, Dietetics & Nutrition, Pharmacy, Forensic Science, Environmental Science). 

I also conducted individual and collaborative research as well as provided supervision for postgraduate and undergraduate students. My collaborations were mostly with the Department of Dietetics and Nutrition, given my interest in obesity management.

On the clinical side, I had a day of each week seeing clients at the Health Psychology Clinic, providing clinical psychology consultations, assessments and therapy to the general public (children and adults) who were referred by various agencies. I also supervised clinical students who were on internal practicums at the Clinic. 

Throughout my tenure at UKM, I gave numerous conference presentations, workshops and educational talks usually on applied psychology and behaviour management (e.g. particularly applied to autism management). I was also one of the psychologists team member involved in screening for the Malaysian Cosmonaut during the Angkasawan Negara Programme. I was also a frequent consultant to the Ministry of Health Malaysia on a range of topics within the Family Health Division, and also the Ministry of Education with regards to school discipline, child and adolescent mental health, and reproductive health issues.

Shine Guidance Centre

I headed Shine Guidance Centre as a director and consultant clinical psychologist. Shine is a centre for families living with developmental disabilities and related conditions. It provides a multidisciplinary approach to assessment and treatment of issues brought about by developmental disabilities (e.g. autism) and related conditions (e.g. learning disorders, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, emotional dysfunctions, cognitive disorders). There, I worked with speech and language pathologists, special education teachers, occupational therapists and a counselling psychologist in helping families manage their family member with cognitive and developmental difficulties.

I'm a Professor at the Department of Psychology School of Medical and Life Sciences, Sunway University.  I also have a joint appointment as a Professor at the School of American Education. I was Deputy Dean (International) of SMLS, until end of 2024 when my role encompassed developing new and existing global partnerships and linkages for various types of stakeholder engagements, which include research collaborations, staff and student mobility, cultural exchanges, as well as the internationalisation of curricula and developing global learning initiatives. I also facilitated the positive integration of international students within the School's academic programmes. Basically, my portfolio covered anything international within the School of Medical and Life Sciences (SMLS), including international university reputation and ranking exercises. I'm now relieved to let go of the position in 2025. 

With regard to research, my main interest areas are in mental health literacy, mindfulness-based cognitive therapy and cross-cultural aspects of mental health intervention. I also teach in the BSc (Hons) Psychology programme - usually Introductory Psychology, Abnormal Psychology / Psychological Disorders, Behaviour Modification and History of Psychology. I also supervise MSc Psychology and PhD Psychology candidates. I'm was briefly Programme Leader for the Master of Applied Behaviour Analysis program in 2024 that's the only one of its kind in Southeast Asia. 

While a clinical psychologist by training, I'm now a full-time academic. I'm passionate about promoting clinical psychology as a mental health profession especially in Malaysia where it is still in its infancy. I helped found the Malaysian Society of Clinical Psychology in 2010, where I was also the Founding President (my membership number is CP1-0001). In my 23 years as an academic, I've given over 400 talks to organisations, the public and at conferences - usually on psychology and mental health topics. 

In my free time, I enjoy doodling - mostly my cartoon owl named Owlvin, and his friends. I'm still looking for a keen publisher for a manuscript I've written and illustrated called "When Owlvin Almost Spoiled Christmas".
