Before starting Paramark, I spent the last decade leading growth and marketing teams at fast-growing companies like Dropbox, Pilot, Magento, and BILL.

During that period, we evaluated hundreds of martech tools and, for the most part, were sorely disappointed. Here's why. We found few solutions that could handle the needs of fast-growing marketing teams. They were either incomplete, hard to use, or claiming things that were just flat-out wrong!

This trend is especially true for marketing analytics. Synthesizing and analyzing marketing data to understand effectiveness should be a solved problem. After speaking to hundreds of marketing leaders at some of the fastest growing companies, I was honestly surprised that the truth is far from it. Understanding and communicating the return on marketing investment continues to be one of the top challenges for marketers.

That's why we decided to build Paramark. Our goal is to help fast-growing marketing teams measure and forecast the impact of their investments, unlocking sustainable growth.

Over the last 13 years, I’ve worked in many different marketing roles at bootstrapped and venture-backed B2B startups. It’s all been intentional too. I wanted to see firsthand what actually works.

I’ve seen a lot, learned a lot, and made my fair share of mistakes.

In 2017, I was dead set on becoming the marketing ops guy. 

Me? The marketing ops guy? It's hilarious to even think back to this moment and share it publicly.

Marketing ops was hot. I knew enough to be dangerous, but I wasn’t the person you’d call if things got really technical. 

I convinced myself that if I was serious about my career, I needed to pick a lane and go deep. I even considered paying for the Marketo Certified Expert exam with my own money because that felt like the move. 

You specialize. You get certified. You build credibility.

Halfway through studying, it finally hit me. I don’t like this stuff at all. I don’t want this to be my thing. I don’t want to wake up every day for the next decade with my professional identity tied to one tool. So I stopped.

For a while, I wondered if that was a mistake. In interviews I’d hear, “You’ve done a little bit of everything. You have a ton of range. We’re looking for someone deeper in X.” 

That feedback hung around in my head longer than it should have. It makes you question whether range is just code for "unfocused".

Then AI shows up. I assumed it would expose me for being a generalist fraud. Instead, it’s done the opposite.

What AI can't do (yet) is apply judgment. It doesn’t know the room. It doesn’t know the buyer. It doesn’t know when the math in that “beautiful” chart is wrong. 

If you don’t already know what good looks like, you won’t catch it.

Emily Kramer has been writing about the rise of the “Gen Marketer” as someone who can go deep when it matters, but also connect dots across teams and actually run things end to end. Maybe generalists aren’t as doomed as 2017 Mark thought. 

Depth still matters. But so does knowing how everything fits together.
