Spent the weekend in Central Alberta, Lacombe, Alix, Red Deer, for my son’s hockey tournament.
Early mornings. Cold arenas. Wet (stinking) gloves in the car (And yes, we brought the trophy home)
And somewhere between games….you realize: This isn’t just a sport.

This is routine. Community. Identity.

Now here’s something most people don’t see:
In towns like #Lacombe, the arena isn’t just where kids play.
It quietly shapes where families live.

Few facts that surprised me:
Only about 1 in 4 homes in Lacombe are #rentals (~28%)
 → Limited rental supply
#Vacancy rate is ~0.8%
 → Practically nothing available
Average #rents are around $1,050–$1,200
 → Not “cheap”, just less visible than big cities

In nearby smaller communities, total purpose-built rentals can be under 100 units
At first glance, you’d think: “Rentals don’t really matter here.”
But it’s the opposite.

Because when supply is this tight,  life decisions start driving #housing decisions.

One parent said it perfectly between games:
“If your kid has practice 4–5 times a week… you don’t live far. You just can’t.”

That’s it. No spreadsheet. No market report. Just real life.
And that creates something most models miss (fortunately TraceRent does not):
In large cities: Demand is driven by macro forces, jobs, migration, rates
In smaller towns: Demand is driven by daily routines, arenas, schools, commute to one key employer

Insight:
The smaller the market, the more powerful the “invisible drivers”
And when:
only ~28% of homes are rentals, vacancy is below 1%, Even small shifts in routine
 → create real pressure on pricing and availability

We spend so much time analyzing housing like it’s purely financial. 
But weekends like this remind you:
Sometimes, housing demand is just a parent trying to make it to practice on time.

AI job postings are surging 134% since 2020. The job market is not.



Here's what most leaders are misreading:

According to Reworked and The Brookings Institution, AI now appears in 4.2% of U.S. job listings, but total job postings are only ~6% above pre-pandemic levels. 1.4 million fewer jobs added in 2025 than the prior year and 90% of AI job postings come from just 1% of companies.

That's not a hiring boom. That's concentration. And concentration changes the leadership equation.

When leaders interpret AI job postings as proof of economic strength, three things happen: 
→ Optics replace outcomes 
→ Hiring outpaces workforce redesign 
→ AI becomes a signal of innovation — not capability

The narrative becomes: "We're hiring for AI." The harder question is: "Have we redesigned the system around it?" Because AI hiring without AI integration is branding — not transformation.

Before posting the AI role, ask:
• Where will this capability live inside the organization?
• What decisions will change because of it?
• How will the rest of the workforce adapt?
• Are we building literacy — or just specialists?

AI jobs aren't the strategy. Workforce architecture is.

The companies that win won't have the most AI job postings. They'll be the ones who: 
➤ Align hiring with system-wide capability
➤ Tie AI roles to measurable operational change
➤ Invest in workforce literacy alongside specialist talent
➤ Separate hype from readiness

AI hiring is easy to signal. AI integration is hard to lead. And in the AI era, the leaders who differentiate won't be the loudest. They'll be the clearest.

United Airlines just turned basic decency into official policy.  



Apparently, we’ve reached a point in society where “please don’t blast TikToks at 35,000 feet” needed to be written into a Contract of Carriage. United updated its rules to require passengers to wear headphones for audio or video content, and passengers who refuse can now be removed from a flight and potentially banned. 

That’s not a travel policy story. That’s a leadership story. Because the moment an organization has to formalize what should already be obvious, it means culture has lost to entitlement. We are living in an era where common sense needs legal language and courtesy needs enforcement. And self-awareness is apparently now a premium feature.

Here's the craziest part - United didn’t create a headphone policy. They created a consequences policy for people who missed kindergarten and for how to behave (think "criss-cross-applesauce"). 

Leaders should pay attention. When standards go unstated, the most inconsiderate people set them for everyone else. On planes. In meetings. On teams. Inside companies.

The lesson is simple: If you have to keep saying, “People should just know better,” you waited too long to make the standard clear. Culture is not what you hope people do. Culture is what you are willing to define and enforce.

United just reminded us: The fastest way to improve a shared environment
is to stop assuming maturity and start clarifying expectations. Noise-canceling headphones are great. Noise-canceling leadership is better.
