The mark of a great leader is this:

Having tough conversations.

And the only way you get better at them?

By having them.

Every strong leader can remember the first feedback conversation they led.

It was clunky.
Super awkward.
Too soft or way too harsh.

Because tough conversations aren’t a personality trait.

They’re a skill.

And like any skill, they improve with reps.

Over time, you learn how to:

Be direct without being harsh.
Be clear without overexplaining.
Be constructive instead of personal.
Be honest without getting emotional.

If you’re telling yourself,
“I’m just bad at this.”

Stop.

You’re not bad at it.
You’re just under-practiced.

And tough conversations are one of the most promotable skills you can build.

Your reputation isn’t formed in easy moments.
It’s formed in the uncomfortable ones.

There are two crucial rules in leadership.

Rule #1:
Stop trying to do it all.

Rule #2:
Learn how to delegate well.

When you step into people leadership, your responsibilities multiply overnight.

If you’re still operating like an individual contributor, you’ll bottleneck your team.

And your own growth.

Yes, your career stalls when you refuse to delegate.

Because leadership isn’t about doing more and more.

It’s about delivering business-prioritized results WITH others.

Delegate something you’d normally keep.
Set clear expectations and align upfront.
Then resist the urge to jump in.

Of course it will feel uncomfortable at first.
Anything new does.

That doesn’t mean you’re bad at it.

It means you’re building the skill that separates managers from leaders.

And once you master it, you stop being the bottleneck.

The biggest goal my clients have:

Becoming more strategic.

And it’s intimidating for one reason.

It requires you to outgrow the version of you that got promoted in the first place.

The individual contributor.

If you’re still the person who:

Dives into work before thinking about impact
Gets lost in the details without zooming out first
Or “saves” the team by taking on more yourself…

You’ll stall your growth.

Because you’re still operating in execution mode.

Leadership growth happens when you start connecting your work to the bigger picture.

When your boss hands you a project and your first instinct is “How do I get this done?”

Pause.

Then ask yourself instead:

How does this tie to company priorities?
Who needs to be involved so this is successful?
What’s the longer-term impact if we do this right?

It’s this type of thinking that changes how you’re perceived.

You stop looking like a strong doer.
And start looking like someone ready for promotion.

You don’t get to avoid hard if growth is your goal.

Building my career in banking wasn’t easy.

→ A woman in a sea of men
→ Saying yes to roles that scared me
→ Constantly advocating for my worth
→ Battling imposter syndrome behind a smile

Starting my own business was just as hard.

→ Questioning my value daily
→ Wondering if anyone was really listening
→ Doubting whether my offer was strong enough

And then came the real wake-up call.

To do the work I love, coaching,
I also had to run a business.

Sales.
Marketing.
Accounting.
Operations.
And yes, IT.

None of it glamorous.
All of it necessary.

And I wouldn’t trade any of it.

Because every version of hard did something for me.

It stretched me.
It sharpened my thinking.
It expanded what I believed was possible.

If you want growth, hard is unavoidable.

The real question is:

Will you choose your hard?
Or let circumstances choose it for you?

Just because the next step feels uncomfortable
doesn’t mean it isn’t the exact growth you need.
